December 3, 2012 BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood thanked Senators Kay Hagan, Tim Johnson and co-sponsors for amending language in National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 that blocked Department of Defense's (DoD) participation in public-private partnerships to produce advanced biofuels. Greenwood said military leaders, recognizing that building domestic advanced biofuels industry to produce cost-competitive fuels is national security priority, responded by proposing public-private partnerships.

December 3, 2012 According to IPC President and CEO John Mitchell, the explicit listing of printed boards in U.S. Department's proposed revisions to Category XI (electronics) U.S. Munitions List published in the Federal Register is an important step in the right direction. For more than a year, IPC has strongly urged the government to clarify International Traffic in Arms Regulations controls on printed boards through explicit enumeration on USML.
FAA Proposes Policy to improve flight attendant workplace safety.

December 3, 2012 FAA, working with OSHA, proposed policy for addressing flight attendant workplace safety. With precedence given to FAA aviation safety regulations, it has been proposed that OSHA should be able to enforce certain occupational safety and health standards not covered by FAA. According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, said proposal would, for first time, enable flight attendants to report workplace injury and illness complaints to OSHA for response and investigation.
NEMA welcomes House vote on U.S.-Russia trade.

November 30, 2012 NEMA congratulated strong bipartisan vote by House of Representatives to approve legislation to grant permanent normal trade relations status to Russia and provide access for U.S. businesses to the benefits of the entry of world's ninth largest economy into rules-based international trading system. Russian Federation formally joined the World Trade Organization on August 22, 2012, after many years of negotiations with the U.S. and other major trading partners.
NTSB holds conference on GIS mapping technology.

November 30, 2012 On Dec 4-5, NTSB will hold conference to explore use of Geographic Information Systems in analyzing and preventing transportation accidents. GIS technologies and analytical techniques use geographically referenced data to support complex data integration, advanced statistical analysis, precise investigation, and effective visualization of data. During meeting, researchers and practitioners will discuss how GIS data, technologies, and techniques are applied to improve safety in transportation.
NTSB Recommendations address air cargo fires.

November 30, 2012 NTSB has issued 3 recommendations to reduce impact of in-flight fires aboard cargo airplanes, saying current fire protection regulations are inadequate. Recommendations urge Federal Aviation Administration to require active fire suppression systems in all cargo containers or compartments of cargo aircraft. They also recommend improving early detection of fires within cargo containers and pallets and urge that cargo containers provide better fire resistance.

November 30, 2012 According to statistics released by Motion Control Association (MCA), motion control product shipments are up 2.3% for first 9 months of 2012 compared to same period in 2011. MCA President Jedd Burnstein called the figure "encouraging," citing weakening global manufacturing and the fiscal cliff threat. MCA Director of Market Analysis Alex Shikany pointed out that strongest growth in shipments for first 9 months of 2012 was seen in sensors and feedback devices at 22.5% and AC Motors at 21.2%.

November 30, 2012 BIO's Brent Erickson called Renewable Fuel Standard report released by National Council of Chain Restaurants (NCCR) an "attack on America’s renewable energy policy" that blames biofuel for increased food costs while ignoring economic impact of imported oil. Erickson cited documented correlation between oil prices and inflation (including food prices) by U.S. Energy Information Administration as well as "exhaustive analysis" by EPA that encompassed 500 scenarios.

November 29, 2012 Four individuals and teams have been selected for final phase of the My Air, My Health Challenge, which was created to encourage development of portable devices that gather and integrate health and air quality data to help protect people's health and make environmental information more accessible. Individuals and teams submitted designs for sensors that can be worn or carried and take into account link between airborne pollutants and health measurements, such as heart rate and breathing.
PTDA Business Index for 3Q 2012 shows slower continued growth.

November 29, 2012 Reading of 50.3 produced by 3Q12 PTDA Business Index represents deceleration from 2Q12 reading of 54.2, indicating power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) industry expanded for tenth consecutive quarter at slower pace compared with 2Q12. Distributors and manufacturers reported decelerated sales growth compared to last quarter. On average, sales rose 5% in 3Q12, down from 7% growth in 2Q12. With average forecast of 6%, PTDA members expect 2013 to be another year of growth.

EPA keeps renewable fuels levels in place.

November 29, 2012 EPA announced that it has not found evidence to support a finding of severe "economic harm" that would warrant granting a waiver of the Renewable Fuels Standard. Economic analyses of impacts in the agricultural sector, conducted with USDA, showed that on average waiving the mandate would only reduce corn prices by approximately 1%. Economic analyses of impacts in the energy sector, conducted with DOE, showed that waiving the mandate would not impact household energy costs.

Companies also expect slight uptick in incoming orders over same time period, while average daily shipping levels remained steady. Percentage of companies with workforce on short time or layoff increased to 17%, up from 1% from October and same as 1 year ago.
EPA raises food waste awareness on America Recycles Day.

November 29, 2012 For 15th annual America Recycles Day, held on November 15, EPA renewed its commitment to helping Americans reduce wasted food with Sustainable Materials Management Food Recovery Challenge. Initiative helps participants make purchasing decisions, find uses for surplus food, and recycle rather than send waste to landfills. Agency says each year, over 33 million tons of food are combusted or end up in landfills, where it produces methane that contributes to climate change.
