Program aims to help applicants develop solutions to local challenges and to share them with other communities. February 20, 2013 Attendees at BSA 2013 Winter Meeting in Atlanta said the meeting met or exceeded their expectations. Although all attendees pursued full agendas in BSA committees, most rate the opportunity to meet and network with others in the industry as a top priority for attending. In addition to regular committee meetings, event also featured a presentation by blogger Alan See who reviewed ways in which the rise of social media impacts organizations and their ability to compete in digital, connected world.
4Q12 PTDA Business Index indicates continued moderate growth.

February 20, 2013 Up from 3Q2012 reading of 50.3, 4Q12 PTDA Business Index reading of 50.7 indicates power transmission/motion control industry expanded for eleventh consecutive quarter. Sales rose 6% in 4Q12, up from 5% in 3Q12, and same percentages applied to distributor sales growth. Manufacturers reported sales of 6%, flat from 3Q, and PTDA members expect 2013 to be another year of growth with average projection of 7% (up from 6% in 3Q2013). Also, 13 of 14 end markets were reported in positive territory.

February 19, 2013 A number of RIA members have partnered with All Hands Volunteers to create The Sandy Solution, a cleaning solution designed to remediate houses with mold growth as a result of flooding from Hurricane Sandy. Depending on building conditions and needs of homeowner, solution offers stepped approach to repair the damage. Unlike other cleaning solutions used in flood cleanup, The Sandy Solution uses a foam generator to apply anti-microbial cleaners.

February 19, 2013 In January 2012 ruling, U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. Circuit ordered EPA to reconsider 2012 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) obligation for cellulosic biofuels but rejected all other complaints brought by American Petroleum Institute (API). Regarding letter sent by API to EPA that claims "zeroing out the 2012 obligation is the only proper implementation of the Court’s ruling," BIO's Brent Erickson said API should yield to EPA's recognized authority and EPA should reject API's spin attempt.
BIO praises Rep. Patrick McHenry on bill to speed JOBS Act.

Patrick McHenry (R-NC) for introducing H.R. 701, a bill to speed implementation of a key provision in Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, which directed US SEC to make revisions to Regulation A that will increase access to capital for growing companies, such as biotech innovators. Once changes are implemented, Regulation A will spur fundraising for emerging biotech companies, for which $50 million capital influx could support groundbreaking research and stimulate job creation.

Wright also emphasized anticipation for working with Obama's Administration and Congress on legislation that "will shore up the Highway Trust Fund with a long-term, sustainable source of funding."

UAS introduction into national airspace will require ensuring privacy is appropriately protected. Accordingly, FAA is requesting public input into FAA efforts to ensure privacy questions surrounding pilot program are properly addressed. FAA's proposed privacy approach emphasizes transparency, public engagement, and compliance with existing law.

EPA Strengthens Protections for human studies with pesticides.

February 18, 2013 Lisa P. Jackson signed amendments strengthening existing standards for human research involving pesticides submitted by third parties for consideration in EPA decision-making. Amendments broaden scope and applicability of EPA 2006 rule, strengthening standards for research considered in EPA decisions; clarifying approach used in EPA's science and ethics reviews of human research involving pesticides; and disallowing participation in testing by subjects who cannot consent for themselves.

February 18, 2013 Scientists from U.S. Department of Energy's NREL and other labs have demonstrated process whereby quantum dots can self-assemble at optimal locations in nanowires. Several practical applications are possible, and fact that stable quantum dots can be placed very close to surface of nanometers raises potential for use in detecting local electric and magnetic fields. Also, quantum dots could be used to charge converters for better light-harvesting as with photovoltaic cells.
