AED Chairman Watters Reprimands Congress for neglecting highways.

July 2, 2014 At press conference on Capitol Hill, AED 2014 Chairman Tim Watters said that federal highway program crisis threatens to take human and economic toll on construction equipment industry. Watters specifically cited looming collapse as threatening 4,000 jobs at construction equipment dealerships tied to road and bridge work and 700,000 jobs in broader construction industry. "Give us a highway bill. And give us the infrastructure the U.S. economy needs to function," Watters concluded.
FAA offers guidance to model aircraft operators.

July 1, 2014 FAA published Federal Register notice on its interpretation of statutory special rules for model aircraft in FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012. In the notice, FAA restates law’s definition of "model aircraft," including requirements that they not interfere with manned aircraft, be flown within sight of operator, and be operated only for hobby or recreational purposes. In addition, FAA restates that it has the authority to take enforcement action against hazardous operations.

July 1, 2014 American Trucking Associations opened registration for 2014 ATA Management Conference & Exhibition (MC&E), which will be held October 4–7 in San Diego, CA. According to ATA President and CEO Bill Graves, this year's meeting "will examine such important issues as energy production, safety, drivers, congestion, and new opportunities for motor carriers due to the resurgence in American manufacturing." Graves called this event "the most important meeting for trucking executives this year."

During discussions with legislators, AEM stressed need for speedy passage of federal highway bill, and value of manufacturing to U.S. economic prosperity and job creation.
ANSI approves IREC clean energy certificate standard.

June 30, 2014 National standard for accreditation of clean energy education/training certificate programs, developed by IREC, has received final approval from ANSI as an American National Standard. ANSI/IREC Standard 14732-2014 is aligned with specific job task analysis, and linked to real-world skills needed by individuals entering clean energy workforce. Certificate programs that apply for accreditation under standard may be hosted by colleges, industry training groups, for-profit organizations, or unions.
IN Gov Mike Pence receives 2014 BIO Governor of the Year award.

June 30, 2014 As announced by BIO, Indiana Governor Mike Pence was honored with 2014 Governor of the Year award in recognition of his leadership and commitment to strengthening biotechnology and health sectors within Indiana. Pence received said award as part of signing ceremony for Senate Bill 262, which creates pathway for substitution of interchangeable biologic medicines in Indiana. Jim Greenwood, President and CEO of BIO called Pence "an exemplary leader" and acknowledged his "strong support."
FAA announces Texas UAS test site now operational.

June 30, 2014 Federal Aviation Administration announced that the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi unmanned aircraft systems test site is ready to conduct research vital to integrating UAS into nation's airspace. Research will concentrate on multiple areas including safety of operations and data gathering in authorized airspace, UAS airworthiness standards, command and control link technologies, human-factors issue for UAS control-station layout, and detect-and-avoid technologies.
Counterfeiting Survey Results have been released by ESFI.

June 30, 2014 Results of Electrical Safety Foundation International's (ESFI) 2014 Counterfeit Electrical Products Survey, which measures awareness and response to presence of counterfeit electrical products among several sectors of electrical industry, show 96% of respondents believe counterfeits pose at least moderate threat to public safety. Only half of respondents reported counterfeit electrical product upon discovery, and majority said they have no process in place to report counterfeit products.
AEM Continues Push for Ex-Im Bank reauthorization.

June 30, 2014 AEM joined National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and U.S. Chamber of Commerce in signing letter to Members of Congress urging reauthorization of U.S. Export-Import Bank (Ex-Im) before its charter expires on September 30. Citing declining equipment exports, AEM president Dennis Slater said Ex-Im Bank reauthorization is "key to improving export shipments along with congressional passage of Trade Promotion Authority" as well as completion of specific trade agreements.
IPC Report shows slowing growth for North American PCB industry.

June 30, 2014 May 2014 findings from IPC's monthly North American Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Statistical Program show sales growth as flat, orders in decline, and book-to-bill ratio below parity at 0.98. Total PCB shipments increased 0.1% from May 2013, which moved year-to-date shipment growth to -0.1%. Compared to the previous month, PCB shipments declined 0.3%. PCB bookings fell 18.0% year over year in May, pushing YTD order growth down to -8.1%. Order growth fell 14.3% from previous month.

Last published in 2012, this document, which provides consistent and repeatable method of laboratory testing regarding operating forces of operable windows and doors, has been updated to include reference to CW and AW products as well as R and LC products. It also encompasses all doors included within scope of AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440 (NAFS).

June 27, 2014 NEMA has published NEMA ST 20-2014 Dry Type Transformers for General Applications, which applies to single-phase and polyphase dry-type transformers for supplying power, heating, and lighting circuits, and designed to be installed and used in accordance with National Electrical CodeŽ. Standard also covers transformers with or without accessories having ratings of 1.2 kV class, 0.25–4,000 kVA. NEMA ST 20 specifically addresses sound levels for these types of transformers.

June 26, 2014 Supported by work undertaken by Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels InitiativeŽ, ASTM International approved addition of bio-derived jet fuel annex to alternative jet fuel specification D7566. Annex details fuel properties and criteria necessary to control manufacture and quality of this new fuel, referred to as Synthesized Iso-Paraffinic fuel, which is produced from hydroprocessed fermented sugars. Annex provides that SIP fuel may be blended at up to 10% (by volume) with conventional jet fuel.
