In response to significant rise in Canadian participation, Laser Institute of America (LIA) expanded its online Laser Safety Officer Training course to include latest Canadian rules regulating use of laser devices. Among key differences between U.S. and Canadian regulations, according to LIA Education Director Gus Anibarro, is the Radiation Emitting Devices Act (REDA) that emerged in 1985. Additionally, online course has been broken into separately accessible topics to facilitate use.

Madison Students take first place in rocketry challenge. Aerospace Industries Association

Students from Madison West High School in Madison, WI placed first at 10th annual Team America Rocketry Challenge finals, besting 99 teams from across the country to earn title of national champion in contest that puts kids on track for careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. Madison West will travel to London before 2012 Summer Olympic Games to defend America's 2011 championship title at the Farnborough International Air Show to compete with teams from U.K. and France.

JR Automation, Motion Controls Robotics, Tennessee Rand, and Wolf Robotics are first to receive RIA's Certified Robot Integrator designation. According to RIA President Jeff Burnstein, "integrators go through a rigorous process," including on-site audit, safety training, and hands-on testing of key personnel as well as other important criteria, to become certified. Program also lets integrators benchmark their processes against best industry practices.

The Boeing Company successfully completed the second parachute drop test for its Crew Space Transportation spacecraft, part of its effort to develop commercial crew transportation capabilities that could ferry U.S. astronauts to and from low-Earth orbit and International Space Station. Boeing's CST system is designed to be a reusable, capsule-shaped spacecraft capable of transporting up to 7 people, or a combination of people and cargo.

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley signed into law a measure, which was introduced in House of Delegate by Delegate Stephen W. Lafferty, that will increase access to recycling in multifamily dwellings. Under Maryland law, apartment buildings or condominiums with 10+ dwellings are required to have recycling available to their residents. Aluminum Association president Heidi Brock commented, "this law will certainly increase the recycling rate and the long-term sustainability of Maryland."

According to IEEE members, increased utilization of picocell base stations could handle increasing wireless demand. IEEE Life Fellow and consultant Stephen Weinstein said picocells and femtocells can minimize shared bandwidth requirement for high-speed services, boost service, and add network capacity. Continuing, Weinstein noted that small cellular base stations "offer a readily available, economic solution that can be easily incorporated into the current infrastructure."

BSA presented its 10th Lifetime Achievement Award to Peter Negri, president and CEO of Jamaica Bearings Company, Inc., at 2012 BSA Annual Convention in Bonita Springs, Fla. In 1971, Peter started working full time for Jamaica Bearings, a family business where he had worked part time and summers since 1960. Negri has been involved with BSA since his early years with Jamaica Bearings. He chaired several committees and after serving on the Board of Directors, was elected president in 1986.

According to AMT, March U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $495.97 million, up 11.3% from February but down 1.4% when compared with total of $502.89 million reported for March 2011. With year-to-date total of $1,356.70 million, 2012 is up 12.9% compared with 2011. In addition, manufacturing added 34,000 jobs in March, and capacity utilization is just shy of 80%. These numbers and all data in report are based on totals of actual data reported by companies participating in USMTO program.

EPRI has been involved in broad collaborative industry initiative since 2009 that is working to identify set of common smart inverter functions. According to EPRI's report, titled Common Functions for Smart Inverters, devices interface AC Grid with DC energy sources, provide grid with wide array of support functions, and deliver both real and reactive power. Inverters can respond to remote commands as well as both steady-state and dynamic changes in grid frequency and voltage.
