NREL names new executive.

December 28, 2012 NREL named Barbara Goodman as Associate Laboratory Director for Renewable Fuels and Vehicle Systems to replace Dale Gardner who is retiring at the end of the year. Goodman will join NREL's executive leadership team and be responsible for the laboratory's transportation and fuels research and development programs, including hydrogen technologies, vehicle systems, and biomass research. In addition, she will oversee National Bioenergy Center and National Advanced Biofuels Consortium.
EPA Releases Update on ongoing hydraulic fracturing study.

December 27, 2012 Results from U.S. EPA's ongoing national study to understand potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water resources will be released in draft for public and peer review in 2014. EPA provided update that outlines work currently underway, including status of research projects that will inform the final study. Among information released are updates on 18 research projects and details on agency’s research approach as well as next steps for these ongoing projects and analyses.
ASQ Survey shows supplier confidence, manufacturer apprehension.

December 27, 2012 According to ASQ's 2013 Manufacturing Outlook Survey, over 75% of suppliers are confident in their ability to meet customer needs in 2013, and one-third of respondents anticipate problem with supplier next year that would result in shortage of parts or services. Survey also questioned respondents about 2013 financial outlook: nearly 65% anticipate revenue increase in 2013, and 70% say they experienced revenue increases in 2012.

December 27, 2012 According to December 2012 PMA Business Conditions Report, 22% of participants believe that economic activity will improve during next 3 months, up from 19% in November, and 29% expect activity to decline, down from 36% in November. Metalforming companies also forecast uptick in incoming orders, with 33% anticipating an increase, up from 28% in November, and 28% predicting decrease in orders, down from 33% in November. Average daily shipping levels continued to remain fairly steady in December.
EPA finalizes clean air standards for boilers and incinerators.

December 27, 2012 EPA finalized changes to Clean Air Act standards for boilers and certain incinerators that will achieve extensive public health protections by slashing toxic air pollution, including mercury and particle pollution, while at the same addressing feedback provided by industry and labor groups, increasing rule’s flexibility and reducing costs. As a result, 99% of approximately 1.5 million boilers in U.S. are not covered or can meet new standards by conducting periodic maintenance or regular tune-ups.
NREL Study covers storage capacity of concentrating solar power.

December 27, 2012 According to report by NREL, storage capacity of concentrating solar power can add significant value to utility company's mix of energy sources. Study found that CSP with 6-hour storage capacity can lower peak net loads when sun isn't shining, enough to add $35.80/MWh to capacity and operational value of utility, compared to PV solar power alone, and even higher value when compared to CSP without storage. Net load is the normal load minus variable renewables such as photovoltaic and wind.
ASTM requests papers for pesticide symposium.

December 26, 2012 Papers are invited for 34th Symposium on Pesticide Formulation and Delivery Systems: Translating Basic Science into Products. Scheduled for October 22-24, 2013, symposium is based on the concept that the foundation of innovative products comes from basic science or ideas. Papers are requested on topics such as advances in seed coating technology or seed treatment; encountering resistance and ways to overcome it; old pests - new solutions; regulatory updates; and biological control agents.
EPA and NSF support research for safer chemical design.

December 26, 2012 U.S. EPA, in collaboration with the National Science Foundation, announced two funding opportunities for up to 10 grants totaling up to $32 million. These two Requests for Applications, "Networks for Sustainable Molecular Design and Synthesis" and "Networks for Characterizing Chemical Life Cycle", will support research to create chemicals that are safer for people and the environment. RFAs are now open for submissions.
EPA Study reveals shift in housing developments across USA.

December 24, 2012 Released by U.S. EPA, 2012 Residential Construction Trends in America's Metropolitan Regions report finds nearly 3 of 4 large metropolitan regions saw increased share of new housing development in previously developed areas (infill housing) during 2005–2009 compared to 2000–2004. Among all 209 metropolitan regions examined, 21% of new homes were infill; remaining share was built on undeveloped land outside existing communities.

NAM Speaks on Court Ruling about EPA greenhouse gas regulation.

Circuit's denial to rehear coalition's case against EPA's regulation of greenhouse gases, NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons expressed disappointment but also welcomed "careful and well-reasoned dissenting opinions" written by 2 judges who supported NAM's arguments. "These rare dissents send a clear signal that significant legal issues remain to be addressed," commented Timmons.

November 2012 ELFA MLFI-25 shows new business volume growth.

December 24, 2012 ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business volume for November is up 3% from volume of $6.2 billion in same period in 2011 and down 16% from previous month. Cumulative new business volume increased 15% year-to-date. Receivables over 30 days increased to 2.0% from 1.7% in October, and charge-offs were up from previous month at 0.5% but down by 28.6% compared to same period last year. Credit approvals totaled 77.0%, down from 79.5% percent in October.

December 21, 2012 Optical fibers, which carry content at speed of light, must connect to sluggish switches, routers, and buffers to transmit data. Researchers have developed dual-core optical fiber that can perform same functions by applying miniscule amount of mechanical pressure. Described in OSA's open-access journal Optics Express, these nanomechanical fibers, which have light-carrying cores suspended less than 1 µm apart from each other, could enhance data processing and serve as sensors in electronic devices.
