March 28, 2013 The 2013 IPC International Technology Roadmap for Electronic Interconnections marks a shift that is occurring throughout the electronics industry: more cooperation and information sharing. One significant change is a greatly expanded section on printed electronics focusing on more realistic opportunities and challenges of the technology. Another change can be found in the environmental section, transformed and renamed the "stewardship" section.

March 28, 2013 Aided by several of their member companies, TRIB displayed selection of new and retreaded tires for Spot the Retreads contest at Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, KY. Over course of 3 days, booth saw 250+ attendees take part in said challenge; less than 10% correctly identified all retreaded tires. After show, 7 winners received set of 8 retreaded tires on their casings. Booth, contest, and media coverage helped reach end users and spread word about benefits of retreaded tires.

March 27, 2013 ASTM WK38747, Specification for Cylindrical Billets Made from Stress-Rated HDPE by Accumulation Winding of Molten Extruded Material Over a Mandrel, will be used by companies that manufacture complex shaped pressure pipe components. This proposed standard is being developed by Subcommittee F17.26 and, according to F17 member Bryan Hauger, will contain requirements for materials used to manufacture billets as well as QC measures, performance requirements, test protocols, and standard sizes.
ASTM Standard covers unalloyed Ti components for implants.

March 27, 2013 Subcommittee F04.12 on Metallurgical Materials has developed ASTM F2989, Specification for Metal Injection Molded Unalloyed Titanium Components for Surgical Implant Applications. According to E04 member Matthias Scharvogel, this standard allows for design of new geometries and reduces manufacturing costs. It covers chemical, mechanical, and metallurgical requirements for 3 grades and also defines requirements as baseline for regulatory bodies.

According to AEM President Dennis Slater, the grade reflects a critical need for long-term infrastructure investment. State of America’s infrastructure has become both an economic and safety issue, with 1 in 9 bridges rated as structurally deficient, and highway congestion costing the economy an estimated $101 billion in wasted time and fuel annually.

Input is sought on perceived gaps in current energy efficiency standardization landscape, and EESCC is looking to obtain as much information as possible in its EESCC Inventory Database by Monday, April 1.

March 26, 2013 U.S. EPA launched TRI University Challenge, a new initiative designed to use academic partnerships to find innovative uses for Toxics Release Inventory data. TRI gives Americans access to information about toxic chemicals in the environment as a tool to better protect health and the environment. Priority will be given to projects related to pollution prevention and sustainability, stakeholder engagement, technology and data mashups, and environmental education.

March 26, 2013 Aric Newhouse, NAM Senior VP of Policy and Government Relations, issued statement regarding ongoing budget debate in U.S. Senate. According to Newhouse, a budget that attempts to fix fiscal woes through tax increases will hurt manufacturers and the economy, while ignoring underlying cause of problems – unsustainable entitlement programs. Rather than $1 trillion in tax increases, they need comprehensive tax reform that will result in simpler, fairer code to drive growth in U.S.
NIST Tests underscore potential hazards of laser pointers.

March 26, 2013 NIST researchers tested 122 laser pointers and found that nearly 90% of green pointers and about 44% of red pointers were out of compliance with federal safety regulations. Tests were conducted on randomly selected commercial laser devices labeled as Class IIIa or 3R and sold as suitable for demonstration use in classrooms and other public spaces. About half the devices tested emitted power levels at least twice the CFR limit at one or more wavelengths.

March 26, 2013 Microscopic device, designed by physicists at NIST for possible use in quantum computer, leverages legacy delay line memory. According to NIST physicist Konrad Lehnert, "We believe mechanical drum motion could be used as a kind of local memory for quantum information systems." Lehnert refers to NIST team's demonstration that information encoded as specific point in traveling microwave signal can be transferred to mechanical beat of micro-drum and later retrieved with 65% efficiency.
