March 11, 2013 To be held in June in Montreal, Canada, BIO's 10th annual World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology will offer breakout program featuring 7 tracks and 40+ sessions that emphasize commercialization in industrial biotech. BIO's Brent Erickson, commenting on breakout program, said featured speakers, global biofuel and renewable chemical company executives and managers, will highlight how biorefineries are producing new employment opportunities and jump-starting economic development.

March 11, 2013 In new Transportation TV video, FRA Administrator Joe Szabo details 2 major agreements that he says will lead to manufacture and purchase of more than 100 new passenger rail cars in the U.S. Under first agreement, submitted by Sumitomo Corporation of America and Nippon Sharyo, bi-level passenger rail cars will be manufactured at newly established plant in New Rochelle, IL. Second agreement, led by Caltrans, involves purchase of domestically produced passenger rail cars by 5 state DOTs.
NAM Says February Employment Report is stronger than expected.

March 11, 2013 According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, manufacturers added 14,000 additional workers in February. NAM chief economist Chad Moutray called this "a good start" and said yet more work needs to be done. According to Moutray, policymakers should continue to focus on making business environment "as pro-growth as possible," and manufacturers need policies to compete better globally. If that occurs, said Moutray, achieving average job growth of 20,000 each month should be obtainable.
Distribution Equipment Standard has been approved by ANSI.

March 11, 2013 NEMA received approval of its distribution equipment standard – ANSI/NEMA AB 3-2013 – from American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Said standard covers molded case circuit breakers and molded case switches, single-pole and multi-pole, fused and unfused, as well as their accessories. Specific updates to this publication include addition of photovoltaic (PV) circuit breakers, National Electrical Code® references, and diagrams.

March 11, 2013 NEMA has published NEMA ICS 15.1-2012, Instructions for the Handling, Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of Medium Voltage Electric Fire Pump Controllers Rated Not More Than 7200V. Regarding technical considerations of aforementioned controllers, guidelines help prevent personal injury and equipment damage by providing information on handling; storage; installation of conduits, cables, and wires; pre-energization and energization; care and maintenance; and required field marking.

March 8, 2013 Intended for biofuels industry, High-Throughput Analytical Pyrolysis (HTAP) tool from NREL facilitates and accelerates task of determining cell wall chemistry to find plants with ideal genes. Screening tool can analyze hundreds of biomass samples per day and provide early look at genotypes most worth pursuing. NREL scientists integrated autosampler, pyrolyzer, and molecular beam mass spectrometer to make HTAP, which analyzes samples as small as 4 mg in 2 min.

Alex Shikany, MCA Director of Market Analysis, says 2012 MCA results were in large part a reflection of shocks to the global economy, such as the Eurozone crisis. According to Jeff Burnstein, President of MCA, economic indicators are good moving into 2013, and polls of member companies show optimism that shipments will increase over next 6 months.

ANSI/AAMI BP22:1994 (R2011) helps manage health of patient’s cardiovascular system by establishing guidelines for use of transducers to measure blood pressure through catheters or direct vascular puncture.

U.S.-Made Construction Equipment Exports grew 13% in 2012.

March 7, 2013 According to U.S. Commerce Department data AEM uses in global markets reports for its members, exports of U.S.-made construction equipment topped 13% in 2012 for total of $26.7 billion. AEM noted that this gain follows 43% growth in 2011 and 28% growth in 2010 after 2009's recession-based decline of 38%. AEM VP and construction sector leader Al Cervero said, "...it's more important than ever for our lawmakers to enact job-creating export and manufacturing policies."

IPC Releases PCB Industry Results for January 2013.

March 7, 2013 IPC announced January 2013 findings from its monthly North American PCB Statistical Program, in which Total North American PCB shipments were down 1.1% from January 2012 and bookings decreased 4.0% year over year. Month-to-month growth rates were not available in January due to change in IPC's survey sample as of the first of the year. Strengthening for second consecutive month, book-to-bill ratio crossed into positive territory in January and stands at 1.01.
