Offerings are to include Basics of Conflict Minerals Compliance (PD53) on February 18, 2013; BUZZ session on conflict minerals (BZ4) on February 20, and discussion between 2 IPC committees on specific efforts to develop tools for conflict minerals compliance on February 21 and 22.

January 24, 2013 ANSI-IREC program for accreditation of renewable energy and energy efficiency certificate programs has completed its pilot phase, which began in January 2012, and is now accepting general applications. Program evaluates certificate-awarding schools, colleges, and other institutions against requirements for equipment, curriculum, facilities, administration, and personnel set forth in IREC Standard 14732: 2013, General Requirements for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Certificate Programs.

January 24, 2013 ANSI announced accreditation of several Cisco Career Certifications under Accreditation Program for Personnel Certification Bodies. Accreditation was granted to Cisco for following certifications: Cisco CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) for Routing and Switching, Cisco CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) for Routing and Switching, CCNA Security, and CCNP Security. Decision was based on review of documentation as well as onsite verification.
Detroit Students to compete at 2013 FIRST Robotics Competition.

January 24, 2013 SME Education Foundation is providing $50,000 grant to the Michigan Engineering Zone, the U-M, College of Engineering, high school student support facility. Funding will help nearly 175 students, comprising 40 teams, from 12 Detroit Public Schools, and surrounding community, compete in 2013 FIRST® Robotics Competition. Once these young inventors create a robot, their teams will participate in competitions that measure effectiveness of each robot, power of collaboration, and their determination.

January 24, 2013 January 2013 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) reports confidence in equipment finance market at 54.2, up from December's 48.5. Regarding business conditions over next 4 months, 6.1% of respondents expected improvement (up from 5.9% in December); 87.9% said conditions will remain same (up from 73.5% in December); and 6.1% believe business will worsen (down from 20.6% from December). Also, 87.9% evaluates current U.S. economy as fair, up from 76.5%.

January 23, 2013 ASTM F2820, Specification for PEKK Polymers for Surgical Implant Applications, specifies allowable ranges for composition, mechanical, and physical properties, as well as acceptable quality control practices, for PEKK polymers used in medical devices. Each factor covered by standard is important in assuring that materials used will perform as expected. In addition, using materials that meet requirements of ASTM F2820 can reduce or eliminate need for animal testing for these materials.

NREL teams up on three ARPA-E projects.

January 22, 2013 NREL has joined DOE and research partners in launching Advanced Management and Protection of Energy Storage Devices program. Over next 3 years, NREL engineers will work with Utah State University, Washington University, and Eaton Corporation to optimize utilization, life, and cost of Li-ion batteries for electric-drive vehicles through improved battery management and controls. Projects are funded under AMPED program with more than $7.4 million from DOE's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy.

Standard is used to provide freeze point determination of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol based engine coolants based on correlation of refractive index and EG or PG concentration in water. Test helps prevent engine/cooling system damage under low ambient temperatures.

Performance Requirements section covers deflection; dimensional stability; resistance to chemicals, heat, and light stability; and static load limit.

January 21, 2013 ASTM F2813, Specification for Glass Used as a Horizontal Surface in Desks and Tables, aims to minimize furniture-related injuries. Developed by Subcommittee F15.42 on Furniture Safety, standard covers performance requirements and test methods to ensure relative safety of glass used in furniture as primary or secondary surface on tables. Henry Chamberlain of F15.42 says "ASTM F2813 will provide assurance...that glass tops of tables and desks will be made of a safety glass product."
