February 27, 2014 Published in OSA's open-access journal Biomedical Optics Express, "Assessing Blood Coagulation Status with Laser Speckle Rheology" describes optical device that, with few drops of blood and within few minutes, measures key coagulation parameters to provide caregivers with timely information about clotting properties of patient's blood. Senior author Seemantini Nadkarni defined team's goal as to provide lab test information but quickly and at patient's bedside.

FAA issues final rule to improve helicopter safety.

February 26, 2014 FAA issued final rule that requires helicopter operators, including air ambulances, to have stricter flight rules and procedures, improved communications and training, and additional on-board safety equipment. Within 60 days, all operators will be required to use enhanced procedures for flying in challenging weather, at night, and when landing in remote locations. Within 3 years, helicopter air ambulances must use latest on-board technology and equipment to avoid terrain and obstacles.

Rocket Contest engages students' STEM-focused skill sets.

February 26, 2014 More than 700 student teams are preparing for the 2014 Team America Rocketry Challenge, a key piece of the aerospace and defense industry’s strategy to build a stronger U.S. workforce in science, technology, engineering, and math. This year's competition challenges each team to design and build a model rocket that can travel to height of 825 ft and back within 48–50 seconds. Each rocket must also deploy 2 identical parachutes carrying 2 raw eggs that must return to ground undamaged.

Proposed Measures protect farm workers from pesticide exposure.

February 26, 2014 U.S. EPA announced proposed revisions to Worker Protection Standard in order to protect farm workers and their families from pesticide exposure. Increased training and signage will inform farm workers about protections they are afforded under law and will help them protect against pesticide exposure. Workers and others near treated fields will be protected from pesticide overspray and fumes, and children under 16 will be legally barred from handling all pesticides.

These safety recommendations stem from information learned during ongoing investigation into December 1, 2013 derailment of Metro-North passenger train in Bronx, NY.

February 20, 2014 Enforcement actions, which led to more than $274,000 in civil penalties, will require 35 home renovation contractors and training providers to take additional steps to minimize harmful lead dust from home renovation activities as required by EPA Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Standards. Issued between May 2013 and Jan 2014, settlements cover failure to obtain certification, failure to follow lead-safe work practices, and failure to ensure subcontractors follow RRP standards.
