ANSI Convenes First U.S.-India SCCP Workshop in New Delhi

Held in New Delhi, India on November 4, ANSI convened the first in a series of workshops to be held under U.S.-India Standards and Conformance Cooperation Program that focused on improving codes and standards for fire safety in tall buildings. Approximately 30 representatives of U.S./Indian organizations participated in discussions pertaining to fire safety principles, role of safety standards, lessons learned from tall building fires, and fire safety infrastructure development.

Inspector General Gives NTSB "Clean" Financial Report for a Seventh Consecutive Year

For seventh consecutive year, NTSB's financial statements received unqualified opinion from Department of Transportation Inspector General. Results are from audit conducted on Safety Board's financial statements for Fiscal Year 2009. Recently, the Government Accountability Office issued a report finding that NTSB "has fully implemented or made significant progress in adopting leading management practices in all areas in which GAO made prior recommendations."

ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings provides minimum requirements for energy-efficient design of buildings. It features 15 proposed agenda, open for public review, including addendum cd which would require active exterior control and bilevel control for all-night applications. Also included are addendum bn for orientation of fenestration and addendum bb which focuses on walls, rooms, and fenestration.

Despite statistics, report titled Impacts of Genetically Engineered Crops on Pesticide Use in the United States: The First Thirteen Years, claims "farmers are increasingly critical of GE crops." According to U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. farmers have embraced biotech varieties of soybeans, cotton, and corn at rate of 91%, 88%, and 85%, respectively. Agricultural biotechnology allows farmers to grow more food on less land using practices that are environmentally sustainable.

At its October 27-28, 2009 meeting, ASTM's board of directors authorized ASTM's management to develop the capability to offer certification services. ASTM International Certification Programs, the new initiative, offers opportunity for certification of products - materials, products, services, systems - as well as personnel. Potential benefits include increased confidence, reliable product comparisons, equitable testing and rating, and facilitating regulatory compliance.

Construction Materials Prices Lower in October

Producer price index report by U.S. Labor Department shows that prices for construction materials and supplies fell 0.2% in October, and overall prices are 5.8% lower on year-over-year basis. While ready mixed concrete, cement, and softwood lumber prices are down, prices for prepared asphalt, tar roofing, and siding as well as steel mill and structural metal products rose. Anirban Basu said slight rise is sign that declines in construction materials prices may have come to end.

When asked why, 61% said they seek professional career. According to Gerald Shankel, President of NBT, educators and counselors often do not view manufacturing as viable career. Separate national poll of 1,000 adults reveals 56% would recommend their child pursue career in manufacturing or another kind of industrial trade.
