September 12, 2014 Previously known as Manufacturing Engineering Media, SME’s media group has been renamed Advanced Manufacturing Media. Manufacturing Engineering magazine has also released its 2015 Media Kit with several portfolio changes. In 2015, there will be more emphasis on news and technical information about advanced manufacturing in North America. In January, SME’s media group will launch a new e-newsletter, which consolidates Lean, AeroDef, Quality, and Energy e-newsletters into single digital product.
FAA Selects Fuels for Testing to reduce GA lead emissions.

September 11, 2014 With goal of having new unleaded fuel that reduces lead emissions for general aviation (GA) by 2018, FAA selected 4 unleaded fuels for testing at William J. Hughes Technical Center. Shell and TOTAL, with one fuel each, and Swift Fuels, with 2 fuels, will work with FAA on phase-one testing, which will conclude in fall 2015. According to Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, "This work will benefit the environment and provide a safe and available fuel for our general aviation community."

September 11, 2014 Open for teams of 7–12th grade students, Team America Rocketry Challenge encourages students to pursue study and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. This year's rules require teams to build and launch a rocket carrying a raw egg to 800 ft and return it to Earth uncracked within flight duration of 46–48 sec. A new requirement calls for rocket to separate during flight, safely returning motor and egg to ground detached from one another in separate segments of rocket.

September 11, 2014 General Electric Company’s Global Research has been selected to receive $1.2 million award by Department of Energy to develop enhanced microgrid control system by adding new capabilities, such as frequency regulation. In support of President Obama's Climate Action Plan and Administration’s commitment to improve national power grid resiliency, Energy Department announced more than $8 million for microgrid projects to help prepare for extreme weather events and electricity disruptions.

September 9, 2014 EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy announced that the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative will provide almost $12 million to federal and state agencies to protect public health by targeting harmful algal blooms in western Lake Erie. Funding builds upon GLRI’s on-going efforts to reduce algal blooms and will be made available to Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana state agencies and to U.S. Geological Survey, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

NREL Releases New Edition of cetane number data compilation.

September 9, 2014 Compendium of Experimental Cetane Numbers, released by NREL, compiles cetane number data from 62 sources. Vital to development of new, energy-efficient, low-carbon fuels and compatible engines, included data covers all available single-compound cetane number data found in scientific literature published prior to March 2014. New edition also provides additional measurements on larger number of compounds along with assessment of data quality.

FAA Proposes Civil Penalty against Mountain Air Cargo.

September 9, 2014 FAA is proposing $132,425 civil penalty against Mountain Air Cargo (Denver, NC) for operating ATR-42 airplane while it was not in compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations. Allegedly, Mountain Air Cargo mechanics improperly repaired one cargo door dent at rear of said aircraft in August 2012. FAA thereby alleges Mountain Air Cargo operated this ATR-42 aircraft on 115 flights between August 7 and October 29 in 2012 when it was not in airworthy condition.

U.S. settles with Costco to cut emissions nationwide.

September 8, 2014 Costco Wholesale Corporation, the nation’s second largest retailer, has agreed to cut emissions of ozone-depleting and greenhouse gas chemicals from refrigeration equipment at more than half of its stores nationwide. In settlement announced by U.S. EPA and DOJ, Costco will pay $335,000 in penalties for federal Clean Air Act violations and improve refrigerant management at 274 stores at an estimated cost of $2 million over the next 3 years.
