Con-way's Langenhahn named National Truck Driving Grand Champion.

August 22, 2014 Jeffrey Langenhahn, Con-way Freight professional truck driver based in Plover, WI, was named 2014 Bendix Grand Champion at 77th annual National Truck Driving Championships. ATA President and CEO Bill Graves applauded all competitors "for their achievements and dedication to safety" and specifically congratulated Langenhahn on his "superior driving skill and commitment to safety." Langenhahn's driving skills and transportation and safety knowledge topped 426 other professional drivers.

Iwaki America, Inc will host HI's Pump Systems Optimization course on October 16, 2014.
NREL Employee Wendy Dafoe awarded for long-term commitment.

August 21, 2014 Wendy Dafoe began work as temp at NREL in 1994 on what was to become Energy Department's Clean Cities Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC). After 20 years, Dafoe is still there but in full-time capacity as senior project leader. Dafoe works closely with Energy Department's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy staff to advance Clean Cities mission. In June, Energy Department gave Dafoe an award at Annual Merit Review and Peer Evaluation Meetings for her long-lasting commitment.
EPA announces supplemental $11 million for Brownfields sites.

August 21, 2014 EPA announced $11 million in supplemental funding to help clean up contaminated Brownfields properties. Revolving Loan Funds will help 31 grantees carry out cleanup and redevelopment projects, which are expected to create more than 700 jobs and leverage over $57 million, while utilizing unique financing mechanisms and partnerships to protect people’s health and the environment. Grants range from about $200,000 to $500,000 with average award of $350,000.
FAA praises AMA for raising model aircraft safety awareness.

AMA established National Model Aviation Day in 2013 to celebrate the hobby of flying model aircraft and share it with the public. AMA maintains a comprehensive safety program for its members and fosters a positive and cooperative environment for the aero-modeling community and the FAA.

Settlement of CWA Violations aims to prevent future oil spills.

August 13, 2014 Cargill Inc. has agreed to settle allegations that it violated Clean Water Act at two large oil storage facilities in Blair, NE, and Eddyville, IA. Clean Water Act requires facilities that store large quantities of oil to develop Facility Response Plan that outlines procedures for addressing worst-case discharges of oil. EPA identified lack of response plan during 2013 site visits at Cargill’s facilities. Through settlement with EPA Region 7, Cargill will pay civil penalty of $187,500 to U.S.
CEA issues call for entries for 2015 CES Innovation Awards.

FAA implements safety reporting program.

August 12, 2014 FAA, in partnership with National Air Traffic Controllers Association, announced safety reporting program called Airport Voluntary Reporting System, which allows FAA employees who work in the Office of Airports to elevate safety concerns without fear of retaliation. AVRS process begins when employee files confidential report to raise safety issue through online reporting system. AVRS Oversight Board composed of three FAA executives will then review, investigate, and help resolve reported items.

August 11, 2014 FAA announced that Griffiss International Airport unmanned aircraft systems test site in Rome, NY is ready to conduct research vital to integrating UAS into national airspace system. Research will also evaluate methods for scouting agricultural fields using different types of sensors, which will benefit farmers regionally and nationally. Specific UAS projects include detection of insects, weeds, diseases, crop characteristics, crop biomass, and background soil characteristics in 2 farm fields.

Named after Blaise Pascal, the French mathematician, physicist, and inventor whose famous law describes the fundamental principle that gives fluid power its force multiplier effect, the Pascal Society will combine the financial and volunteer contributions of companies across the supply chain to create a similar effect for the fluid power industry.
