NAM Board of Directors gains proven manufacturing executives.

February 1, 2013 NAM Board of Directors will see Caterpillar, Inc. chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman as chair and Tenneco, Inc. chairman and CEO Gregg Sherrill as vice chair. Also, Materion Technical Materials president Al Lubrano will serve as chair of SMM Group, while Neenah Enterprises, Inc. president and CEO Thomas Riordan will serve as its vice chair. Referring to these "proven manufacturing leaders," NAM's Jay Timmons expressed confidence that their leadership will inspire policymakers to listen.
ASTM Standard tests shedding properties of paint brush filling.

February 1, 2013 ASTM D7834, Test Method for Filling Material Shedding of Paint Brushes, has been developed by Subcommittee D01.61 on Paint Application Tools, part of ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications. Standard describes procedure for testing shedding properties of both natural bristle and synthetic filament paint brushes. Test described in standard determines ability of paint brush to resist shedding during paint application.

February 1, 2013 Developed by Subcommittee D01.46 on Industrial Protective Coatings, part of ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications, ASTM D7803 describes methods of preparing surfaces of hot-dip galvanized iron and steel for powder coating and the application of powder coating materials. Standard explains steps to achieve adherence of powder coating over galvanized steel so there is no adhesion failure of powder system.
ASTM Standard addresses testing of hand hygiene products.

January 31, 2013 Approved by Committee E35 on Pesticides, Antimicrobials and Alternative Control Agents, ASTM E2897 describes the use of pigskin as an alternative to human hands in testing the efficacy of hand hygiene products in combating contamination. Standard will permit testing of pathogens that may be encountered in a healthcare environment but would not be tested on human subjects. It also permits testing of conditions that cannot be simulated in a test tube.

Associations will also provide updates on publications, standards, or any other pertinent activity of NFPA, OSHA, and CSB.

The 50,000 ft˛ Bullitt Center in Seattle is being built with one goal in mind — to be the greenest, most energy-efficient commercial building in the world. Like NREL, the Bullitt Foundation is looking to change the way buildings are designed, built, and operated.

January 31, 2013 Scheduled for February 8, 2013, ANSI Caucus Luncheon will feature David Johnson, director of the office for technical programs and coordination activities in the directorate of technical support and emergency management at U.S. Department of Labor’s OSHA. Mr. Johnson began work at OSHA in 2012, where he oversees both its NRTL program and its Variance program. He previously served as safety director to several U.S. national parks and was an active duty soldier in the U.S. Army from 1984–2005.
