ASTM Achieves Accreditation by Standards Council of Canada.

February 6, 2013 ASTM International announced that it has been accredited by Standards Council of Canada (SCC), signifying that ASTM meets all requirements for consensus standards development, set by SCC, which mirror principles of World Trade Organization: transparency, openness, consensus, and relevance. SCC audit was conducted November 6–8, 2012. In tandem with SCC's accreditation, ASTM established new ASTM International Canada Office in Ottawa that is to be led by Diane Thompson.

February 5, 2013 Papers are invited for 10th ASTM International Symposium on Advances in Steel Technologies for Rolling Bearings, which will be held May 6–7, 2014 in Toronto, Canada in order to bring together rolling bearing steel practitioners to present latest developments in rolling bearing steels and testing. Papers from steelmakers, semi-finished and finished bearing steel component producers, rolling bearing producers, and development institutes will be encouraged on variety of topics.

Developed by Subcommittee C16.40, standard covers insulation materials, systems design, application methods, protective coverings, guarantees, inspection, testing, and maintenance of thermal insulation in temperature range of -302 to +1,200°F.

IPC Releases PCB Industry Results for December 2012.

February 5, 2013 IPC announced December findings from North American PCB Statistical Program. For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, industry shipments in December 2012 were down 14.5% and bookings decreased 7.5% compared to December 2011. Year to date, combined industry shipments were down 5.2% and bookings were down 2.4%. Compared to previous month, combined industry shipments increased 5.7% and bookings increased 19.1%. Combined industry book-to-bill ratio in December 2012 rose to 0.98.

February 4, 2013 Four fuel cell hybrid vehicles - advanced (FCHV-adv), on loan from Toyota through 2-year Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, will help NREL enhance its research related to hydrogen fueling infrastructure, renewable hydrogen production, and vehicle performance. According to NREL's Keith Wipke, "Because the vehicles will be four or five years old by the time our two-year loan ends, we will also be able to observe extended durability and reliability."

February 4, 2013 According to NAIOP Industrial Space Demand Forecast, U.S. industrial market is poised for significant growth throughout 2013 and 2014. Respectively, annual net absorption in 2013 and 2014 is forecast to reach 150 million and 175 million ft² – 50% and 75% above net absorption figure of roughly 100 million ft² posted for 2012. Robust growth is attributed to reduced risk of double dip recession as well as improving GDP and job growth. Predictive model is funded by NAIOP Research Foundation.

February 1, 2013 EPA has released "America’s Children and the Environment, Third Edition," a comprehensive compilation of information from variety of sources. Report shows trends for contaminants in air, water, food, and soil that may affect children; concentrations of contaminants in the bodies of children and women of child-bearing age; and childhood illnesses and health conditions. Report also incorporates revisions to address peer review and public comments on draft materials released in 2011.
AIA sounds alarm on economic downturn report.

Blakey, President and CEO of AIA, contraction of the U.S. economy in the fourth quarter underscores AIA's warning for the past 18 months that severe across the board budget cuts—both to defense and non-defense discretionary spending—threaten to throw the economy into a tailspin. In less than 30 days, unless Congress and the White House act, sequestration will kick in, leading to higher unemployment, reduced tax revenue, and lower consumer spending.

February 1, 2013 C revision of IPC-7095, Design and Assembly Process Implementation for BGAs, will help design, assembly, inspection, and repair personnel improve reliability of ball grid arrays (BGAs) and fine-pitch ball grid arrays (FBGAs) in high-density applications. Guideline includes expanded information on mechanical failure issues that occur after assembly. In addition to BGA inspection and repair, guidelines address reliability issues and use of Pb-free joint criteria associated with BGAs.

February 1, 2013 ASTM D7834, Test Method for Filling Material Shedding of Paint Brushes, has been developed by Subcommittee D01.61 on Paint Application Tools, part of ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications. Standard describes procedure for testing shedding properties of both natural bristle and synthetic filament paint brushes. Test described in standard determines ability of paint brush to resist shedding during paint application.

Standard explains steps to achieve adherence of powder coating over galvanized steel so there is no adhesion failure of powder system.

January 31, 2013 Approved by Committee E35 on Pesticides, Antimicrobials and Alternative Control Agents, ASTM E2897 describes the use of pigskin as an alternative to human hands in testing the efficacy of hand hygiene products in combating contamination. Standard will permit testing of pathogens that may be encountered in a healthcare environment but would not be tested on human subjects. It also permits testing of conditions that cannot be simulated in a test tube.
