LIA Promotes Work Safety during 2013 NAOSH and OSHP in May.

April 11, 2013 During annual North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week from May 5-11 and Occupational Safety and Health Professional (OSHP) Day on May 8, LIA will join with thousands of people and businesses worldwide in raising awareness of importance of being safe at work. NAOSH 2013 theme is "Safe Workplaces for All," and activities are scheduled throughout North America. Preliminary Bureau of Labor Statistics report showed 4,609 people died from on-the-job injuries in 2011.
BIO World Congress highlights industrial biotech in Canada.

World Standards Day Committee announces paper competition.

April 11, 2013 The 2013 World Standards Day Paper Competition has been announced by U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day Planning Committee and paper competition’s sponsor, SES – The Society for Standards Professionals. Theme for this year's competition, "Standards for a World at Work and Play," reflects many ways that standards function as tool to bolster consistency, repeatability, dependability, and excellence in wide variety of technologies and fields. Papers are due by August 3.

Dyroff Award of Honorary Committee D02 Membership to Janet Lane, a consultant based in Haddonfield, NJ. Lane has filled several roles on Committee D02 since she joined ASTM in 1989. A specialist in testing and quality assurance of petroleum products and lubricants, Lane was an advanced research associate and program leader in Analytical Science Laboratory at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering for 32 years.
HID Lamp Shipment Indexes remain on decline.

April 11, 2013 During 2012, NEMA's High Intensity Discharge lamp shipment indexes declined for second consecutive year. Mercury vapor lamps declined 9.6% to index value of 44 signifying that shipments during 2012 were 44% of the 2006 base level. Index for sodium vapor lamp shipments fell 6.2%, landing at 75, and metal halide lamps posted index reading of 80, declining by 4.9% for the year. Relative market shares for each HID lamp type were essentially unchanged with respect to previous year.
Linear Fluorescent Lamp Shipments wane during 2012.

April 11, 2013 NEMA’s shipment indexes for T5 and T8 linear fluorescent lamps increased 2.1% and 15.1% in fourth quarter of 2012 to reach 156.8 and 103.1, respectively. However, index for T5 lamps posted annual reading of 159, a decline of 10.7% from 2011, while T8 lamps declined 14% during the year to reach index value of 99 for 2012. Shipments of T12 lamps showed largest annual slide, dipping by 18.6% to 50, half the level of 2006. Index for T12 lamps reached record low of 36.6, a decline of 1.1% during Q4.

April 11, 2013 ANSI has announced first accreditation of U.S. certification body offering certification under ISO 3834 – Quality Requirements for Welding. ISO 3834 provides method for manufacturers or fabricators to demonstrate that they have met relevant quality requirements related to welding. Illinois-based DOT Quality Services was also certified to offer certification in connection with welding of metallic materials, including arc welding and resistance welding.

All persons with input regarding agreement, including how it relates to U.S. interests and priorities, are encouraged to voice their views.

Proposed Vacuum Cleaners Standard to cover HEPA filtration.

April 9, 2013 ASTM International Committee F11 on Vacuum Cleaners has formed new task group to develop proposed standards for high efficiency particulate air filtration, typically known as HEPA. Standards will clarify methodology and criteria used to define HEPA filtration for sealed vacuum cleaner systems and filter components used in residential and commercial settings, as well as provide both retail buyers and consumers a means of comparing manufacturer filtration claims and filtration benefits.

April 9, 2013 Based on extensive input from auto manufactures, refiners, and states, U.S. EPA proposed sensible standards for cars and gasoline that will significantly reduce harmful pollution, prevent thousands of premature deaths and illnesses, while also enabling efficiency improvements in cars and trucks. An important component of administration’s national program for clean cars and trucks, standards will help avoid up to 2,400 premature deaths/year and 23,000 cases of respiratory ailments in children.
Settlement with Dominion Energy reduces harmful pollution.

April 9, 2013 Department of Justice and U.S. EPA announced that Dominion Energy has agreed to pay $3.4 million civil penalty and spend approximately $9.8 million on environmental mitigation projects to resolve Clean Air Act violations. Settlement will result in reductions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter by more than 70,000 tons per year, across 3 of utility’s coal-fired power plants, located in Kincaid, IL, State Line, IN, and Somerset, MA.

FAA extends tower closure date.

April 9, 2013 Last month, FAA announced it would eliminate funding for 149 federal contract air traffic control towers as part of agency’s required $637 million budget cuts under sequestration. FAA said today that it will delay tower closures until June 15, allowing agency to attempt to resolve multiple legal challenges to closure decisions. As part of tower closure implementation process, agency continues to consult with airports and operators and review appropriate risk mitigations.
