Industrial Ethernet Initiative targets process automation.

April 17, 2013 Initiative for process automation, launched by ODVA in cooperation with major suppliers to process industry – Cisco Systems, Endress+Hauser, Rockwell Automation, and Schneider Electric – aims to accelerate adoption of industrial Ethernet in process automation. ODVA's first action was to form standing committee to define strategic market requirements for new areas of technical work. It will publish white paper describing ODVA's vision for process automation and resulting technical approach.
ODVA and FDT Group announce work to support CIP networks.

April 17, 2013 Technical work is underway in FDT Group to develop annex to FDT2 specification for ODVA’s family of CIP Networks. Annex will ensure that support for FDT-compatible Device Type Manager is possible for users of EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, CompoNet, and ControlNet who are also using updates to FDT technology that are included in FDT2. When FDT is used in with CIP and its network adaptations, system provides interoperable environment for configuration, command, and control.

April 17, 2013 Subcommittee E30.01 on Criminalistics is developing ASTM WK34571, Test Method for the Extraction and Derivatization of Vegetable Oils and Fats from Fire Debris and Liquid Samples with Analysis by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Detailing process by which acids can converted to their corresponding methyl esters, this proposed ASTM International standard will aid in fire investigation by facilitating identification of vegetable oil or fat gathered from fire debris.

Latter will include 25 sessions with 131 presentations total on diverse topics. Conference will take place July 4–5, 2013 at Cité Congress Exhibition Centre in Lyon, France.
Tyson Foods Settlement addresses anhydrous ammonia releases.

April 16, 2013 Addressing threats of accidental chemical releases after anhydrous ammonia was released during incidents at facilities in KS, MO, IA, and NE, U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced Clean Air Act (CAA) settlement with Tyson Foods, Inc. and several of its affiliate corporations. Terms of consent decree requires Tyson to conduct third-party audits of its current compliance with CAA's Risk Management Program requirements at all 23 facilities as well as pay $3.95 million penalty.
AEM Urges International Trade Treaty to cover off-road equipment.

April 16, 2013 AEM urged that off-road equipment be included in international treaty facilitating export financing, helping small and mid-sized U.S. manufacturers grow their export businesses. Expressing support for expansion of Cape Town Convention, AEM signed letters sent to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry as well as secretary general of UNIDROIT. Treaty expansion (Fourth Protocol) would help increase exports by creating international standards for 4 specific areas.

Griese, standards development and green initiative manager at TCNA, received 2013 President's Leadership Award from ASTM International. ASTM International member since 2007, Griese is chairman of Committee C21 on Ceramic Whitewares and Related Products and its Subcommittee C21.06 on Ceramic Tile. Griese is also member of Committee E60 on Sustainability and is currently serving one term on ASTM COTCO.

McCartney, member of Committees D18 on Soil and Rock and D35 on Geosynthetics, joined ASTM in 2007 and serves as vice chairman of Subcommittee D18.04 on Hydrologic Properties and Hydraulic Barriers and is chairman of D18.09 on Cyclic and Dynamic Properties of Soils.

To help protect them from window falls, Window Safety Task Force offers such tips as avoiding placement of furniture near windows to prevent children from climbing, not relying on insect screens to prevent window fall, and installing building code-compliant devices that limit how far window will open or guards with release mechanisms to help prevent falls.
Construction Industry Unemployment drops to 14.7% in March 2013.

April 16, 2013 According to April 5 employment report by U.S. Department of Labor, construction industry unemployment fell from 15.7% in February to 14.7% in March. USA added 18,000 new construction jobs in that month, and year-over-year workforce expansion has been measured at 2.9%. Commenting, Associated Builders and Contractors Chief Economist Anirban Basu said this report "implies that interest rates will remain low, which...is good for real estate valuations and for nonresidential construction."
February Manufacturing Technology Orders rise 5.7% from January.

April 16, 2013 As reported by USMTO program participants, February U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $385.89 million – up 5.7% from January but down 10.6% from February 2012. Year-to-date total of $750.94 million makes 2013 down 11.9% when compared with 2012. In addition to calling month-to-month gain "certainly good to see," AMT President Douglas K. Woods said year-to-date decline in orders "is in line with expectations we had for a slight slowdown in the first two quarters of 2013."

According to Dempsey, the commitments that Japan has made to address longstanding challenges are encouraging, and we will continue to work vigorously with the U.S. government to ensure a level playing field for all manufacturers in the United States.

April 16, 2013 Sunbelt Rentals, Inc., member of Restoration Industry Association (RIA), has contributed $50,000 in matching funds to Restoration Industry Legal Fund (RLIF) and is challenging other vendors at upcoming RIA Industry Summit and Exhibition to contribute. Ken Rothmel of Sunbelt Rentals said "Sunbelt Rentals cannot sit idly by and not help to defend RIA members" and asked other RIA exhibitors "to commit what they can to help fund this important cause."
