ASTM Standard specifies plastic lumber use requirements.

May 1, 2013 ASTM D7568, Specification for Polyethylene-Based Structural-Grade Plastic Lumber for Outdoor Applications, presents all requirements needed so that plastic lumber materials can be appropriately specified for uses, such as main and secondary framing members, in which improved mechanical properties are essential. Standard applies to solid, rectangular SGPL products in which polyethylene resin (non cross-linked) is continuous phase and represents at least 50% of product by weight.
AAMA's Western Region to host Spring Summit.

April 30, 2013 Western Region of American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) will host its Spring Summit, from April 30 to May 1, in Tempe, AZ. Features will include panel discussion focused on energy-efficient fenestration, economic update from Dr. Esmael Adibi, as well as tour of Palo Verde Energy Education Center. Additionally, updates will be given on Department of Energy, Title 24 building efficiency standards, as well as recent code changes pertinent to Western Region.

April 30, 2013 U.S. DOE National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has been recognized by Denver Post as "2013 Top Work Place." Survey was taken voluntarily by 75% of laboratory's staff, according to NREL Director Dan Arvizu. It covered organizational health, job satisfaction, and engagement with questions on NREL's strategic direction, leadership, values, execution, and individual job satisfaction. Laboratory was also ranked on how meaningful it is to work there and how engaged it is in its mission.
April 2013 Business Conditions Report shows dip in manufacturing.

April 30, 2013 PMA's April 2013 Business Conditions Report shows 16% of 136 participating metalforming companies expect decline in economic activity over next 3 months. Also, 21% of participants predict decrease in orders, while 22% reported decreased average daily shipping levels in April; 44% said shipping was same as 3 months ago. Up from March 2013 and April 2012, 14% of companies reported employees on short time or layoff.

April 30, 2013 ASTM Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems is developing proposed standard ASTM WK38788, Specification for Crosslinked Polyethylene OD Controlled Tubing for Hydronic Heating/Cooling Systems. Key focus will be to establish testing and performance requirements for limiting oxygen permeation into hydronic fluid, which if left unchecked can lead to rapid corrosion of ferrous components within system. Some applications include radiant floor heating/cooling, snow melting, and solar heating.
Forensic Standard to address digital and multimedia evidence.

April 30, 2013 ASTM WK27106, Terminology for Digital and Multimedia Evidence Examination, will provide framework for the general public to understand terminology used by forensic professionals. Proposed standard is a compilation of terms and definitions from areas of computer forensics, image analysis, video analysis, forensic audio, and facial identification. Among terms defined in standard are digital forensics, photogrammetry, and steganography.

EPA updates list of organizations using renewable energy.

April 30, 2013 U.S. EPA's Green Power Partnership released updated list of Top 50 organizations using electricity from clean, renewable sources. Intel Corporation, Microsoft, and Apple, Inc. rank in top 10. Agency also released list of 47 partners committed to purchasing green power for 5 yr or more, including 15 higher education institutions. Also, EPA held College and University Green Power Challenge for 7th year, with University of Pennsylvania in lead.
Seattle and King County, WA will upgrade stormwater systems.

April 30, 2013 Under settlements with Department of Justice and U.S EPA, King County and city of Seattle agreed to invest in upgrades to local sewage and combined stormwater collection, piping, and treatment. Both agreements allow integrated planning approach, encouraging communities to set their own clean water project priorities and invest in fixing most pressing problems first. Also, settlements require development and implementation of joint plan to improve system-wide operations and maintenance.

April 29, 2013 According to EPA's 18th annual report of overall U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, there was a 1.6% decrease in emissions in 2011 from the previous year and a 6.9% drop below 2005 levels. Recent trends can be attributed to multiple factors including reduced emissions from electricity generation, improvements in fuel efficiency in vehicles with reductions in miles traveled, and year-to-year changes in prevailing weather.
NREL Survey shows improvement in B100 biodiesel quality.

April 29, 2013 According to NREL's latest national survey of 100% biodiesel (B100) "blend stock" samples, 95% of samples from 2011-12 met ASTM International fuel quality specifications which serve as guidelines for the industry. NREL researchers collected fuel samples from 53 producers and 14 terminals across the U.S. Samples were tested for range of critical properties, such as free and total glycerin content, metals content, and cloud point that could have immediate impact on operability.
