IEC Standards Have History in mobile phone development.

April 25, 2013 IEC has been involved in standardization work related to phones and mobile devices, helping bridge gaps between technologies and advance work in mobile device innovation. Examples include IEC 62047-5 Ed. 1.0 b:2011, Semiconductor devices - Micro-electromechanical devices - Part 5: RF MEMS switches, and IEC 60118-13 Ed. 3.0 b:2011, Electroacoustics - Hearing aids - Part 13: Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Standards include requirements overseeing use of hearing aids with mobile phones.
BIO Announces New Chair and Officers as well as Board members.

April 25, 2013 BIO announced election of GlycoMimetics President and CEO Rachel King as Board of Directors Chair for 2013–2014 term and Allergan Chairman, President, and CEO David Pyott as Board Secretary. Also, BIO announced re-election of Fenway Pharmaceuticals Chairman and CEO Mark Skaletsky as Board Treasurer as well as election of 19 Directors to serve on BIO's Board Executive Committee. Furthermore, BIO welcomed election of 8 new members to its Board of Directors.
BIO announces dates for 2013 BIO Convention in China.

April 25, 2013 BIO and China Center for Pharmaceutical International Exchange announced that the 2013 BIO Convention in China will be held Nov 11–13. Leaders from global biopharma industry will gather to develop strategic collaborations, establish distribution networks, find service providers, and create cross-border alliances with companies from U.S., Europe, and Asia. Now in its third year, BIO Convention in China attracts more than 1,000 executives from 400 companies representing over 36 countries.
IPC Capitol Hill Day educates policy makers on industry concerns.

ASTM Standard covers electromagnetic soil density gauge QC.

April 24, 2013 ASTM D7830, Test Method for In-Place Determination of Density and Water Content of Soil Using an Electromagnetic Soil Density Gauge, will be used by contractors and government agencies for quality control and quality assurance of electromagnetic soil density gauges. Standard covers procedures for determining in-place properties of non-frozen, unbound soil and soil aggregate mixtures by measuring electromagnetic impedance of compacted soil using electrical, non-nuclear devices.
Proposed ASTM Standard focuses on vapor intrusion measurement.

April 24, 2013 ASTM WK40037, Guide for Determining Concentration Values from Groundwater, Air and Soil Gas Using Adsorbent-Based, Passive Samplers, will link easy to use, cost-effective, and nonintrusive passive sampling with concentration data to measure vapor intrusion. Demonstrating that compound concentration in air, soil gas, or water can be measured accurately and provide defensible quantitative data, this standard will help promote avoidance of health problems associated with vapor intrusion.
ASABE revises rural power distribution standard.

April 24, 2013 ASABE has revised its standard on rural power distribution service for motor and phase converters. Revised document, ASAE EP329.3, Single-Phase Rural Distribution Service for Motors and Phase Converters, includes updated reference information as noted in the most recent periodic review of the document. In addition, a section for Electrical Code requirements was added.
BIO announces George Washington Carver Award winner.

April 24, 2013 BIO named Dr. Jay Keasling, professor of biochemical engineering at University of California, Berkeley, as recipient of 2013 George Washington Carver Award. Dr. Keasling is being honored for his contributions to field of synthetic biology promoting use of engineering microbes to produce biofuels, medicines, and cosmetic compounds from ingredients such as sugar cane and grasses. Keasling will receive award and deliver keynote during BIO’s 10th Annual World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology.
BIO Asks Florida Governor to preserve state's RFS.

April 24, 2013 BIO urged Florida Gov Rick Scott (R) to veto HB 4001/SB 320, which is anticipated to be passed by the Florida legislature next week and repeal state's Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). BIO's letter said adopting this legislation could chill investment in state's biofuel industry and larger biotechnology industry. "Undermining the state's market for biofuels will discourage further research and development of technologies and crops within the state, potentially exporting investment and jobs."

April 24, 2013 Under auspices of U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission, U.S. Department of Commerce is organizing U.S.–Russia Standards and Conformity Assessment Forum that will take place in Moscow on May 30, 2013. Event is supported by ANSI and U.S.–Russia Business Council and will focus on World Trade Organization (WTO) Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement as well as standards and conformance issues that impact trade. Interested organizations in U.S. and Russia are encouraged to attend.
ISO Workshop to address multiple resource productivity.

April 24, 2013 Currently, no international standard exists to address multiple resource evaluation, despite pressing international need for guidance on considering interconnections in relation to resource sustainability and conservation. To more fully examine possible approaches to address this need, ISO will hold workshop aimed at helping to develop ISO-published International Workshop Agreement on guidelines for multiple resource evaluation. Workshop will be hosted in Haifa, Israel by SII.
ELFA releases Monthly Leasing and Finance Index for March.

April 24, 2013 According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, overall new business volume for March was $6.8 billion, flat compared to volume in March 2012. Month-over-month, new business volume was up 45% from February, and year to date, cumulative new business volume was up 3% compared to 2012. Receivables over 30 days were unchanged in March from previous month at 2.0%, and were down from 2.8% in same period in 2012. In addition, credit approvals totaled 78.4% in March, up 1% from February.

NEMA commends President's budget for energy efficiency focus.

April 24, 2013 NEMA commended administration for including FY2014 budget measures aimed at promotion of energy-efficiency efforts in public/private sectors. In particular, budget encourages States to cut energy waste with Race-to-the-Top challenge, enhances preparedness and resilience, and invests in repairing existing infrastructure and building infrastructure of tomorrow, including power grids that are resilient to extreme conditions. Budget also calls for making permanent tax incentives for energy efficiency.
NEMA says DOE transformer standards improve efficiency.

April 24, 2013 NEMA expressed its overall satisfaction with the Department of Energy’s final rule establishing increased energy conservation standards for distribution transformers. Throughout the fall of 2011, DOE hosted a negotiated rulemaking, where stakeholders gathered to discuss the justification for higher energy efficiency standards for all three classes of regulated distribution transformers: low voltage dry-type, medium voltage dry-type, and medium voltage liquid-immersed.
BIO recommends changes to EPA's RIN Quality Assurance Program.

April 23, 2013 BIO asked EPA to consider changes to proposed RFS Renewable Identification Number Quality Assurance Program, which would place unnecessary and burdensome costs on biofuel producers. BIO's recommended changes would ensure program is truly voluntary, that it does not enable potentially anti-competitive behavior, and that it does not impose costly, duplicative, and unnecessary regulatory requirements on renewable producers in early stages of commercial development.

Partnership will also serve to further policy engagement in China, where BIO supports development of therapeutic biologics industry that ensures better access to innovative medicines for patients in China.
