EPA proposes to replace and reduce harmful greenhouse gases.

July 16, 2014 EPA is proposing to prohibit use of certain chemicals that significantly contribute to climate change where safer, more climate-friendly alternatives exist. Proposed action would change status of certain high-global warming potential HFCs that were previously listed as acceptable under SNAP Program to be unacceptable in specific end-uses. It is estimated to reduce greenhouse gases by up to 42 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2020.
EPA to hold fifth annual Energy Star Battle of the Buildings.

July 16, 2014 During 2014 Energy Star Battle of the Buildings: Team Challenge, more than 5,500 buildings nationwide are going head-to-head to reduce their energy use. In support of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan, which calls for businesses to cut in half the amount of energy they waste over the next 20 years, competition specifically targets wasted energy in commercial buildings, and will motivate businesses to improve energy efficiency, reduce harmful carbon pollution, and save money.

Brazil Uses EPRI Training Simulator during 2014 World Cup.

July 16, 2014 Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico (ONS), national operator of Brazilian electric system, uses EPRI's Operator Training Simulator (OTS) to ensure operators are prepared to respond to situations that might disrupt power to World Cup venues as well as broader Brazilian population. ONS has deployed the Operator Training Simulator at its national control center and 4 regional control centers. Several transmission control centers across country also have accessed OTS remotely.
NEMA QER Recommendations aim to improve electrical grid.

July 16, 2014 NEMA submitted 14 recommendations for consideration as part of Quadrennial Energy Review (QER) to improve grid reliability, efficiency, and security to meet America’s current and future energy needs. NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis called these suggestions "the product of deliberations by some of the nation’s leading electrical manufacturers and innovators" and noted that solutions and technologies are available "today to achieve a reliable, efficient, and secure electric grid."

July 9, 2014 Optical imaging methods are rapidly becoming essential tools in biomedical science because they’re noninvasive, cost-efficient, and pose no health risks since they don't use ionizing radiation. Team of researchers from Spain's Jaume I University and the University of València has developed single-pixel optical system based on compressive sensing that can overcome fundamental limitations imposed by light scattering. Work was published in The Optical Society’s open-access journal Optics Express.

July 8, 2014 Following years of advocacy work to clarify treatment of printed circuit boards under International Traffic in Arms Regulations, IPC is applauding U.S. Department of State’s final rule for Category XI for Military Electronics of the United States Munitions List. New rule states that PCBs "specially designed" for defense-related purposes will be controlled under USML Category XI. Additionally, any designs or digital data related to "specially designed" PCBs will be controlled as technical data.

EPA Updates seek to reduce harmful pollution from new landfills.

July 8, 2014 As part of President Obama's Climate Action Plan, Strategy to Reduce Methane Emissions, U.S. EPA is proposing updates to its air standards for new municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills. This proposal would require certain landfills to capture 2/3 of their methane and air toxics emissions by 2023 – 13% more than required currently. Also, EPA issued an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) seeking public feedback on how and whether to update guidelines for existing landfills.
