May 31, 2013 ASTM International Committee C24 on Building Seals and Sealants honored Christopher J. Sass, associate principal at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc., with Award of Merit for contributions to standards activities. Specifically, Sass was recognized for his "meritorious and dedicated service to Committee C24 with a strong commitment to standards development, especially in the area of building seals and sealants," as well as technical expertise, leadership, and professionalism.
Skid Steer Safety Manuals come in e-book versions.

May 31, 2013 AEM has updated its Skid Steer Safety Manual and now offers e-book versions in English and Spanish. Text has been rewritten and graphics have been updated to be more inclusive of all styles of skid steer loaders. Safety information now contains content on Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel fuel hazards and hazards involving masked visibility areas around machine. Manuals are available through online AEM store and e-book versions are also available through Apple iTunes Book Store.

PCS Reduces Hazards from phosphoric acid manufacturing in LA.

May 31, 2013 U.S. EPA and Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) announced that PCS Nitrogen has agreed to reduce air emissions from phosphoric acid production at its facility in Geismar, LA toáresolve alleged Clean Air Act violations concerning cooling tower operations. Underásaid settlement, PCS will prevent release of 15 million pounds of hydrogen fluoride annually and payácivil penalty of $198,825.30. PCS has already implemented pollution controls sought in this settlement.
ASTM to develop snow and ice accretion testing standards.

May 31, 2013 Part of Subcommittee E06.55 on Performance of Building Enclosures, E06.55.13 task group willábe responsible for study and assessment of snow and ice accretion—the process by which snow and ice build up on solid objects exposed to freezing precipitation. First topic task group plans to address is procedures for facade testing in an environmental test chamber. Testing will provide format for quality information gathering and help to build knowledge base for various facades.

According to one member of subcommittee responsible for its development, proposed standard will be used by laboratories to dissolve samples for metals analysis and comparison with other testing method solutions.

Developed by Subcommittee E07.07 on Electromagnetic Method, part of ASTM International Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing, standard addresses need to detect surface breaking flaws electronically and to accurately size any surface breaking cracks found on cast and forged mill girth gear and pinion teeth.

May 29, 2013 Because weather, particularly gusty wind, has been a variable in parasailing accidents, ASTM subcommittee F24.65 on Parasailing has developed ASTM F2993, Guide for Monitoring Weather Conditions for Safe Parasail Operation. Standard is a step in the right direction to keep parasail operators alert and to monitor weather in a proper fashion. Once insurance industry is aware of ASTM F2993, companies will most likely adjust their policies to reference the standard.
