May 2, 2013 While previously scheduled as spring 2014 event, WESTEC will now take place October 15–17, 2013 at Los Angeles Convention Center due to increased industry demand and participant feedback. Christine Longroy, WESTEC event manager, noted American manufacturing sector's "renewed strength and economic vitality" and expressed desire to capitalize on this progress. Moving event up to fall of 2013 from Spring of 2014 was deemed necessary; exhibitors and attendees agreed.

Cement Manufacturer agrees to reduce harmful air emissions.

May 1, 2013 U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced that CEMEX, Inc., owner and operator of a Portland cement manufacturing facility in Lyons, CO, has agreed to operate advanced pollution controls on its kiln and pay $1 million civil penalty to resolve alleged violations of the Clean Air Act. Complaint filed against CEMEX alleged that between 1997–2000, company unlawfully made modifications at its plant that resulted in significant net increases of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions.

May 1, 2013 ASTM WK11340, Test Method for Determination of Sediment Control Product’s Ability to Reduce Soil Loss Associated with Rainfall-Induced Erosion, will provide performance-based data of sediment control devices to regulating entities, specifiers, consumers and manufacturers. This proposed standard will offer means to calculate support practice factor (P factor), which would indicate how well sediment control device traps or filters sediment.

May 1, 2013 ASTM D7568, Specification for Polyethylene-Based Structural-Grade Plastic Lumber for Outdoor Applications, presents all requirements needed so that plastic lumber materials can be appropriately specified for uses, such as main and secondary framing members, in which improved mechanical properties are essential. Standard applies to solid, rectangular SGPL products in which polyethylene resin (non cross-linked) is continuous phase and represents at least 50% of product by weight.

Survey was taken voluntarily by 75% of laboratory's staff, according to NREL Director Dan Arvizu. It covered organizational health, job satisfaction, and engagement with questions on NREL's strategic direction, leadership, values, execution, and individual job satisfaction. Laboratory was also ranked on how meaningful it is to work there and how engaged it is in its mission.

April 30, 2013 PMA's April 2013 Business Conditions Report shows 16% of 136 participating metalforming companies expect decline in economic activity over next 3 months. Also, 21% of participants predict decrease in orders, while 22% reported decreased average daily shipping levels in April; 44% said shipping was same as 3 months ago. Up from March 2013 and April 2012, 14% of companies reported employees on short time or layoff.

April 30, 2013 ASTM Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems is developing proposed standard ASTM WK38788, Specification for Crosslinked Polyethylene OD Controlled Tubing for Hydronic Heating/Cooling Systems. Key focus will be to establish testing and performance requirements for limiting oxygen permeation into hydronic fluid, which if left unchecked can lead to rapid corrosion of ferrous components within system. Some applications include radiant floor heating/cooling, snow melting, and solar heating.

Proposed standard is a compilation of terms and definitions from areas of computer forensics, image analysis, video analysis, forensic audio, and facial identification. Among terms defined in standard are digital forensics, photogrammetry, and steganography.

EPA updates list of organizations using renewable energy.

April 30, 2013 U.S. EPA's Green Power Partnership released updated list of Top 50 organizations using electricity from clean, renewable sources. Intel Corporation, Microsoft, and Apple, Inc. rank in top 10. Agency also released list of 47 partners committed to purchasing green power for 5 yr or more, including 15 higher education institutions. Also, EPA held College and University Green Power Challenge for 7th year, with University of Pennsylvania in lead.
