June 24, 2013 AASHTO's Waterborne Freight Transportation Bottom Line Report indicates water borne freight system is underfunded and faces serious challenges. It identifies threats to future of Marine Transportation System and action alternatives, including creation of Office of Multimodal Freight at USDOT. Also suggested is implementation of best practices for planning and investment among Federal, state, regional, and local organizations to improve and modernize waterborne freight transportation.

June 21, 2013 U.S. EPA announced selection of 16 grantees for rewards totaling $3.2 million via Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training (EWDJT) Program. These grants support local work to recruit, train, and place unemployed individuals in jobs that address environmental challenges in their communities. Rather than filling jobs with contractors from distant cities, EWDJT grants provide employment opportunities for local residents to participate in revitalization of their communities.

June 21, 2013 Via its Smart Growth Implementation Assistance (SGIA) Program, U.S. EPA will offer technical assistance to 3 areas of USA to help improve their economy and create jobs while protecting health and environment through use of smart growth strategies. Applicants receiving technical assistance in 2013 will include state of Rhode Island; Mississippi County, AR; and Kelso, WA. Finalists were selected based on how well projects fit with current program priorities.
ASTM Honors Charles Naegele for contributions to fence standards.

Naegele was honored for his exemplary leadership and technical support while serving as chairman of Subcommittee F14.40 on Chain Link Fence and Wire Accessories. In addition to F14, Naegele works on several other ASTM Committees: A05, D18, E50, E54, and F33.

Housing Design Contest aims to aid natural disaster survivors.

June 20, 2013 American Institute of Architects (AIA) is partnering with Make It Right, St. Bernard Project, and Architecture for Humanity to launch Designing Recovery competition. Designed to help survivors of 3 recent natural disasters, competition will take place in 3 settings – New Orleans, LA; Joplin, MO; and New York, NY – where non-profit partner organizations are working to recover from previous disasters. Organizers hope designs will also aid other communities recovering from recent disasters.

ASABE to Adopt large rotary mower ISO safety standard.

June 20, 2013 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has initiated project to adopt, nationally, ISO 4254-13:2012, Agricultural machinery - Safety -Part 13: Large rotary mowers. ASABE's adoption of said international standard will include maximum cutting height for use in conducting foot probe test. Although this deviates from ISO document, inclusion will further align technical content with standard SAE J232, Industrial Rotary Mowers, published by SAE.
RIA recognizes PRE-TEC as Certified Robot Integrator.

June 20, 2013 PRE-TEC of Eugene, OR has been named as RIA's 13th Certified Robot Integrator, having passed on-site audit, safety training, and testing of key personnel. Association's program allows integrators to benchmark their own processes against best industry practices, allowing them to identify areas for improvement. RIA requires integrators to be recertified every 2 yr and represents 300 robot manufacturers, system integrators, component suppliers, consulting firms, and more.
BIO Applauds Legislation for renewable chemicals support.

June 20, 2013 BIO and BIOCOM thanked Representative Scott Peters (D-CA) for introducing legislation, offered as amendment to be considered during House floor debate on Farm Bill, that would make renewable chemicals eligible for support in USDA Biorefinery Assistance Program. BIO's Brent Erickson called Peters "a strong champion for the industrial biotech sector," citing his support for renewable chemicals and work as advocate for policies to advance military biofuel production.
AIA releases poll data on public support for unmanned aircraft.

June 20, 2013 AIA released poll, conducted by Christian Science Monitor, at Paris Air Show indicating 54% of public respondents favor increased non-military use of unmanned aircraft systems. Results also indicate public opinion that governments should resolve perceived privacy issues, airspace regulations, and other challenges. In poll, 25% of public is aware of non-military uses such as law enforcement, search and rescue, flood monitoring, wildlife conservation, and fighting wildfires.

Over next 4 months, 19.4% of executives believe conditions will improve, while 71% say conditions will not change. As for U.S. economic conditions, 22.6% expect improvement over next 6 months, while 25.8% think their company will increase spending on business development. Over 90% of respondents rank current U.S. economy as fair.

EPA awards $2 million for Small Business Innovation Research.

June 19, 2013 EPA has announced that more than $2 million will go to 25 small businesses nationwide to develop new environmental technology that will help protect people's health and the environment. Each company will receive SBIR Phase I contract of up to $80,000 to further develop their technology over next 6 months. This year’s projects focus on drinking water, wastewater, manufacturing, green building, waste monitoring and management, air quality, sustainable use of biomass, and homeland security.

This clarification reassures members of ANSI Federation that the sequester will not halt their involvement in U.S. voluntary consensus standardization process.
