EPA awards students for sustainable environmental solutions.

June 26, 2013 EPA announced that 7 university and college teams received P3 Award for their innovative solutions to public health and environmental challenges. EPA’s People, Prosperity and the Planet award competition was held at the 9th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo and featured approximately 300 student innovators showcasing their sustainable project. Each award winning team qualifies to receive grant of up to $90,000 to further develop their design and potentially bring it to marketplace.
NIST Develops New Methodology for standards analysis.

June 26, 2013 Released by NIST, FACTS: A Framework for Analysis, Comparison, and Testing of Standards outlines problem-solving methodology for facilitating design and implementation of voluntary consensus standards. Methodology uses matrix format to aid process of analyzing proposed or existing standard in light of relevant characteristics. Potential uses include clarifying goals during development of standard and providing insight into issues and concerns related to implementing separate standards.
ISO Prize honors individuals contributing to standardization.

June 26, 2013 ISO Prize, an award created on the recommendation of Dr. Boris Aleshin, ISO's immediate past-president, is intended to honor an individual outside the ISO community who has made significant contributions to the wider understanding and use of ISO voluntary consensus standards. International Organization for Standardization will present the award and prize of 20,000 Swiss francs to the winner at the 2013 ISO General Assembly in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Outside ASTM, Boes is member of American Foundry Society, American Society for Quality, American Welding Society, and ASM International.

Collette has been ASTM International member since 1979 and, as ASTM fellow, was honored with Award of Merit from Committee F17 in 2000 for his dedicated work.

June 25, 2013 Our Built and Natural Environments: A Technical Review of the Interactions among Land Use, Transportation, and Environmental Quality was announced by EPA Acting Administrator Bob Perciasepe during national Twitter Town Hall meeting. It summarizes trends in land use, buildings, travel behavior, population growth, and expansion of developed land. Discussions on environmental consequences of these are also included, as is conclusion describing ways to reduce such effects.
NREL Sustainability Program reaches beyond campus.

Efforts visible to community include projects such as Graham House and NREL Parking Garage Workshop.
Proposed Standard will help combat Clostridium difficile spores.

June 25, 2013 ASTM WK31504, Test Method for Producing High Titers of Viable and Semi-Purified Spores of Clostridium difficile using a Liquid Medium, is currently being developed. Proposed standard will describe production and semipurification of Clostridium difficile spores (endospores) when testing environmental surface disinfectants used to combat C. difficile. Liquid medium described therein will enable proper testing of disinfectants for ability to deal with C. difficile in environment.

June 25, 2013 ASTM WK42011, Guide for Contractor Self-Assessment for U.S. Government Property Management Systems, is being developed by Subcommittee E53.20. Within this proposed standard, guidance will be provided for contractor self-assessment (CSA) program that addresses requirements of Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR). Chairman of E53.20 commented that proposed standard will provide necessary guidance to develop program suited to specific operating environments.

May Equipment Finance Index shows business volume holding steady.

June 25, 2013 ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index for May indicates 21% increase in new business volume compared to May 2012, at $7.5 billion, unchanged from April 2013. Year to date, cumulative new business volume was up 11%. Index also showed receivables over 30 days declined to 1.6%, while charge-offs remained unchanged and credit approvals increased to 78.8%. William G. Sutton, ELFA President and CEO, said data suggest equipment finance sector is on verge of breakout performance.

BIO Official defends biofuels standard to House Committee.

June 25, 2013 BIO submitted comments to House Committee on Energy and Commerce in response to 4th white paper reviewing Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Document examines goals and achievements of RFS as part of national energy policy. According to BIO's Brent Erickson, biofuels technology is helping U.S. economy by mitigating impact of high oil costs and reducing gas prices. He also said RFS2 has further developed domestic biofuels industry, reducing dependence on foreign fuels and creating jobs.
