ELFA releases survey of economic activity for June.

July 25, 2013 According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, overall new business for June was $8.6 billion, up 8% compared to June 2012. Month-over-month, new business volume was up 15% from May, and year to date, cumulative new business volume increased 10% compared to 2012. Receivables over 30 days were at 1.4% in June, reaching new historic low, down from 1.6% in May. Delinquencies declined from 2.4% in same period in 2012, and charge-offs were unchanged for past 4 months at all-time low of 0.3%.
Telematics Data Standard enables access to machine data.

July 24, 2013 Representatives from AEM and AEMP have approved a proposal under which manufacturers would make telematics data available to end-user customers through secure internet protocol. As part of joint initiative, AEMP and AEM task forces had conducted confidential member surveys, AEM to help determine manufacturer types and level of data to release to end-users and AEMP to help assess barriers to telematics usage and determine what types of data end-users need to effectively manage their fleets.

July 23, 2013 University of Trento hosted latest EPMA Powder Metallurgy Summer School, which took place on July 8-12 in Trento, Italy. During this time, 52 students were introduced to Powder Metallurgy and had opportunity to listen to, discuss, and solve problems with 25 PM experts. Lectures were complemented by laboratory facilities, where students learned about impact resistance of low alloyed PM steels, microstructural analysis and microhardness, and hardenability and sinterhardenability by dilatometry.

July 23, 2013 According to July 2013 issue of North American PCB Market Report, PCB sales growth to military/aerospace market continues to outpace sales to other vertical markets in North America. Rigid PCB sales to military market were up 3.4% from January through May compared to same period in 2012, while rigid PCB sales to other markets were down 9.1% year-to-date (YTD). In flexible circuit segment, YTD growth rates of sales to military and other markets were both positive.

This marks increase from June's index of 57.3, reflecting participants' increasing optimism despite continued moderate equipment demand. Survey comments from industry executive leadership show that, depending on market segment, executives have differing points of view on current and future outlook for industry.

EPA announces $15 million in Brownfields award grants.

July 22, 2013 EPA announced approximately $15 million in supplemental funding to help clean up contaminated Brownfields properties. Revolving Loan Funding will help 41 communities carry out cleanup and redevelopment projects, which will help communities create jobs while protecting people’s health and the environment. Ranging from about $200,000 to $400,000 with an average grant award of $300,000, funds have enabled the support of 90,000 jobs in cleanup, construction, and redevelopment.
Butterfly Color Research may inspire hue-changing materials.

July 22, 2013 Physicists have uncovered how subtle differences in tiny crystals of butterfly wings create varied patterns of color even among closely related species. Discovery is reported in Optical Society's Optical Materials Express journal in paper titled "Iridescence and nano-structure differences in Papilio butterflies." If researchers can figure out how to replicate wings' light-manipulating properties, discovery could lead to new coatings for manufactured materials that could change color by design.

Panel will focus on EPA's development of proposed rule to revise or end existing authorized uses of PCBs as appropriate if conditions under which they were authorized 30+ years ago have changed.
