IPC Releases PCB Industry Results for January 2014.

March 17, 2014 As announced by IPC concerning January 2014 findings from monthly North American PCB Statistical Program, PCB sales and orders were below January 2013 levels. Book-to-bill ratio continues climbing but remains below parity at 0.95. Total North American PCB shipments decreased 7.5% from January 2013, and bookings came in at 3.7% below same month last year. Compared to December 2013, sales were down 16.9% and bookings were down 7.0% as based on same sample of reporting companies.

March 17, 2014 During the 24th Colorado Science Bowl, 6 northern Colorado teams made it to the final 16, and in the end, students from Boulder's Fairview High School beat out 47 other teams to claim victory. Students answered rapid-fire questions covering topics ranging from physics to math to earth and space science. Second place went to Douglas County High School, and northern Colorado's Poudre High School rounded out top finishers to take home third-place trophy.

Coal Companies to spend $200 M to reduce water pollution.

March 14, 2014 Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. (Alpha), Alpha Appalachian Holdings, and 66 subsidiaries will spend estimated $200 million to install and operate wastewater treatment systems and implement system-wide upgrades to reduce discharges of pollution from coal mines. This settlement covers ~79 active mines and 25 processing plants in KY, PA, TN, VA, and WV. Additionally, companies will pay civil penalty of $27.5 million for thousands of permit violations under Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 402.

NTSB to examine safe transport of oil and ethanol by train.

EPA stops illegal import of vehicles.

March 13, 2014 A Chinese power sports company and its related U.S. distributor have agreed to recall and replace fuel tanks that will better control gasoline vapors in approximately 1,000 vehicles and take other steps to control pollution stemming from illegal import of over 12,000 recreational vehicles and highway motorcycles. EPA alleges that these vehicles were not certified, as required by the Clean Air Act, to meet federal emission standards. Companies will pay combined civil penalty of $725,000.

A4A applauded legislation introduced by House Transportation Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR), which ensures airline customers are aware of exactly how much of their ticket price goes to federal taxes.

March 13, 2014 Airlines for America (A4A) opposes FY2015 White House budget proposal, which calls for $4.2 billion in higher and additional taxes on airlines and their customers. In addition to urging Members of Congress to say no to said proposal, A4A cited commercial aviation as key enabler of job growth and U.S. economic activity that could contribute at greater level if not impeded by excessive taxes and regulations. Tax burden on aviation and its customers has more than tripled since 1998.

Of 18 grant recipients, 6 are from USA. Grants include efforts to support wastewater treatment, improve nutrition in local communities, and protect water quality at beaches.

Blakey brought up FAA programs facing challenges. She noted Next Generation Air Transportation System modernization program, saying funding cuts pose new obstacles to meeting milestones. "The economic benefits of the NextGen program far outweigh the nominal budget gains that would be realized if the proposed cuts are enacted," said Blakey who also cited risks to safety, environment, and U.S. competitiveness.

Blakey cited Secretary Hagel's comment on choice between smaller but more technologically advanced military and retaining current size but not creating and deploying new capabilities. Blakey called allotted $154 billion "far less than what we need to maintain technological superiority" and noted that "these caps will force bad choices at a time of increasing global instability."
