Her keynote address specifically focused on importance of universal design and challenged attendees to take fresh approach. "Moving from ADA to Universal Design: A Road Map" showcased Watson's 24+ years of experience with individuals with disabilities. She noted minimum requirements of accessibility standards and ADA guidelines and promoted principles of Universal Design (UD).

June 9, 2014 Regulatory exemptions asked for by 7 aerial photo and video production companies would allow film and television industry to use unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) with FAA approval. Demand for commercial UAS operations could lead to economic benefits, but all associated safety issues must be considered. FAA has been working to implement provisions of Section 333 of FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 and move forward with UAS integration before proposing small UAS rule.

June 9, 2014 According to AED Chairman Tim Watters, Sustainable Water Infrastructure Investment Act (H.R. 4237/S. 2345) will spur economic growth and job creation within construction equipment industry by generating up to $6 billion in demand and supporting nearly 1,000 employees over next decade. “The time is long overdue for substantial investment in water infrastructure projects," said Watters. This bill would lift state volume cap on private activity bonds for such projects.

June 9, 2014 U.S. EPA is releasing Clean Power Plan proposal, which cuts carbon pollution from existing power plants for the first time to protect public health, move USA toward cleaner environment, and fight climate change while supplying Americans with reliable and affordable power. As stated by EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, "We don't have to choose between a healthy economy and a healthy environment – our action will sharpen America’s competitive edge, spur innovation, and create jobs."
Reckitt Benckiser to Cancel specific rodenticide products.

June 9, 2014 U.S. EPA reached agreement with Reckitt Benckiser Inc. to stop production 12 d-CON mouse and rat poison products that do not currently comply with EPA safety standards by year's end and stop distribution to retailers by March 31, 2015. According to EPA's Jim Jones, "This voluntary move will get us far faster results than would otherwise be achieved through an administrative process." Jones also noted that "Canceling these products will help prevent risks to children, pets, and wildlife."

June 9, 2014 Professor Taysir Nayfeh, of Cleveland State University, received "Trailblazer in Copper Technology" award for his research in ultraconductive copper - a technology that could revolutionize how copper is used in applications ranging from aerospace in medium term to residential wiring in longer term. Professor Nayfeh's 3 years of exhaustive research have revealed that nanocarbon-in-copper composite materials have a conductivity that is more than twice that of pure copper.

June 6, 2014 Researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School developed near-infrared fluorescence lymphatic imaging (NIRFLI) technology, which can non-invasively image human lymphatic system using fluorescent dye, commercially available laser diode, and military-grade night vision devices. At CLEO: 2014, UTHealth scientist John Rasmussen will describe how this technology has been taken from benchtop development to various clinical applications.
NEMA Commends Proposed EPA Rule for including energy efficiency.

June 6, 2014 Commending inclusion of energy efficiency as key provision in EPA's proposed rule to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from existing electric power plants, NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis praised notion that energy efficiency is included as part of USA's climate change strategy. By letting states use energy efficiency as means of compliance, proposed rule could increase demand for efficient electrical products that, in turn, support manufacturing sector jobs.

North American PCB Industry continues slow growth.

June 5, 2014 According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, year-on-year growth was up slightly in April and book-to-bill ratio remained positive at 1.01. Total North American PCB shipments increased 1.6% in April 2014 from April 2013, which moved year-to-date shipment growth to -0.2%. Compared to previous month, PCB shipments declined 12.0%. In addition, PCB bookings strengthened but continued negative at -1.5% year over year, and order growth fell 8.1% from previous month.
