EPA finalizes 2013 Renewable Fuel Standards.

August 9, 2013 As part of ongoing effort to enhance energy security and reduce carbon pollution, EPA finalized 2013 percentage standards for fuel categories that are part of Renewable Fuel Standard program established by Congress. Final 2013 overall volumes and standards require 16.55 billion gallons of renewable fuels to be blended into U.S. fuel supply. Standard specifically requires 1.28 billion gal of biomass-based diesel, 2.75 billion gal of advanced biofuels, and 6.00 million gal of cellulosic biofuels.

August 9, 2013 Subcommittee B05.06, part of ASTM Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys, is developing ASTM WK42235, Test Method for Efficacy of Copper Alloy Surfaces as a Sanitizer; ASTM WK42244, Test Method for Residual Self-Sanitizing Activity of Copper Alloy Surfaces; and ASTM WK42247, Test Method for Continuous Reduction of Bacterial Contamination on Copper Alloy Surfaces. Developed in conjunction with EPA, standards will provide base for evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy of solid copper materials.
ASTM Developing Standard for precast concrete retaining wall units.

August 8, 2013 ASTM WK38192, Specification for Wet-Cast Precast Modular Block Retaining Wall Units, is being developed by Subcommittee C27.20. According to C27 member Clint Hines, "This standard will set requirements for dimensional tolerances of individual block units and lifting device requirements for improved safety in handling and installation." Hines also noted this standard will, among other things, eliminate use of reconstituted ready-mixed concrete in production of block units.
ASTM Symposium covers graphite testing for nuclear applications.

August 8, 2013 Graphite Testing for Nuclear Applications: The Significance of Test Specimen Volume and Geometry and the Statistical Significance of Test Specimen Population (September 19–20) will focus on testing of as-manufactured graphite. Principal objectives are collecting evidence for singular reference; providing technical basis for restrictions on test specimen size in ASTM standards; providing guidance on tests for valid measure of given property; and considering development of new standards.
EPA awards $2 million to small businesses.

August 8, 2013 EPA awarded more than $2 million in contracts to 7 small businesses to develop sustainable technologies that will help protect human health and the environment. Small Business Innovation Research program funded 25 research proposals from small businesses for 6 months through last year’s Phase I contracts of $80,000. Following peer-review process, 7 Phase I recipients are being awarded Phase II contracts for up to $300,000, supporting further development and commercialization of their technology.
AAMA Specification streamlines fenestration industry BIM process.

August 8, 2013 AAMA 912-13, Voluntary Specification for Non-Residential Fenestration Building Information Modeling (BIM), identifies and outlines minimum requirements for Design intent (DI) models and Project execution and coordination (PEC) models. Intended to be referenced in other industry standards, contract documents, proposals, and marketing materials, specification should, according to AAMA BIM Task Group chair Dan Luoma, "provide a more streamline BIM process for the fenestration industry."

Substantive changes to current document include introduction of marking for automatically controlled receptacles adopted by NEMA and mandated by National Electrical Code®, and dimensions for single and dual 2 1/8 in. mounting plates.

BIO's Brent Erickson also relayed importance of EPA's continued stance against outside legal and political challenges to undermine RFS.

August 6, 2013 ASTM International is launching initiative to develop standards for body armor worn by military and criminal justice personnel. This effort is supported by National Institute of Justice, U.S. Army Program Executive Office – Soldier, and NIST, who are collaborating to harmonize existing ASTM body armor standards, especially test methods, where practical. Proposed standards will be developed by Subcommittee E54.04 on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
