NREL collaborates with Colombian oil firm.

August 14, 2013 NREL is working with Ecopetrol, the largest oil company in Colombia, to process the residue from sugar cane and palm oil harvesting into fuel ethanol for blending with gasoline. Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between NREL and Ecopetrol aims to optimize conversion process for bagasse and to analyze economic case for commercial production of biofuel from these materials. It will also include some limited study on palm rachis — the material left over after palm oil production.

Average profit margins were also down but still positive in all regions, while regional market size estimates and forecasts for 2013 indicate recovery in market growth this year for all regions.
ASTM Standard to address rollers used in concrete beam tests.

August 13, 2013 ASTM WK42757, Practice for Supporting Rollers Used in Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Beam Tests, will describe design of supporting rollers to be used in beam tests conducted to assess post-crack performance of fiber reinforced concrete mixture. Proposed practice will include drawings and dimensions of rollers, type of material rollers are to be fabricated from, and operation of rollers during test, as well as method for correcting test results to account for constant, low degree of friction.

Potential users are design engineers, leak location contractors, geomembrane installers, regulators, and site owners.
Cement Committee to develop compressive strength test method.

August 12, 2013 ASTM Committee C01 on Cement is developing proposed standard ASTM WK42602, Test Method for Compressive Strength of Alkali Activated Coal Fly Ash and Raw or Calcined Natural Pozzolan Cement Mortars. Once approved, standard may be applied to compare different lots or sources or to monitor changes in strength given by single source of fly ash or natural pozzolan. Primary users will be producers of construction materials, independent testing laboratories, and academic research groups.
EPA screens contaminated sites for renewable energy potential.

August 12, 2013 EPA updated its RE-Powering Mapping and Screening Tool, which will now provide preliminary screening results for renewable energy potential at 66,000 contaminated lands, landfills, and mine sites across the country. Pulling from EPA databases of potentially and formerly contaminated lands, as well as partnering with state agencies from California, Hawaii, Oregon, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, and Virginia, RE-Powering Initiative expanded universe of sites from 24,000.

ASTM Standard will test coatings for sewer environments.

August 9, 2013 ASTM WK33537, Practice for Operating the Severe Wastewater Analysis Testing Apparatus, covers apparatus and set of procedures that are used to create and maintain simulated sewer headspace environment to be used to test potential coatings. Testing is done with liquid phase containing prescribed acid and saline solution, and vapor phase consisting of air, humidity, and concentrated sewer gas. Temperature of test chamber is elevated to create accelerated conditions and reaction rates.
EPA updates oil and gas standards for storage tanks.

August 9, 2013 U.S. EPA issued updates to its April 2012 oil and natural gas standards for storage tanks, which allow responsible oil and natural gas production while ensuring air emissions are reduced as quickly as possible. Updates will phase in emission control deadlines, starting with high-emitting tanks first, and will provide time needed to ramp up production and installation of controls. Storage tanks that emit 6 or more tons of VOCs a year must reduce emissions by 95%.
EPA finalizes 2013 Renewable Fuel Standards.

August 9, 2013 As part of ongoing effort to enhance energy security and reduce carbon pollution, EPA finalized 2013 percentage standards for fuel categories that are part of Renewable Fuel Standard program established by Congress. Final 2013 overall volumes and standards require 16.55 billion gallons of renewable fuels to be blended into U.S. fuel supply. Standard specifically requires 1.28 billion gal of biomass-based diesel, 2.75 billion gal of advanced biofuels, and 6.00 million gal of cellulosic biofuels.

August 9, 2013 Subcommittee B05.06, part of ASTM Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys, is developing ASTM WK42235, Test Method for Efficacy of Copper Alloy Surfaces as a Sanitizer; ASTM WK42244, Test Method for Residual Self-Sanitizing Activity of Copper Alloy Surfaces; and ASTM WK42247, Test Method for Continuous Reduction of Bacterial Contamination on Copper Alloy Surfaces. Developed in conjunction with EPA, standards will provide base for evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy of solid copper materials.
