While "Shaping the Future of Injection Molding through Game-Changing Innovation" will take place on December 11, "Global Advances in Plastics for Medical Devices and Packaging" will take place on December 12. Deadlines are as follows: author name, paper title, and 250-word abstract by September 15, 2013; full paper by October 15; and PowerPoint® presentation by December 1.

August 2, 2013 To meet supplier demand, PMMI is expanding the PACK EXPO Las Vegas show floor yet again. Scheduled for Sept 23–35, event will include more than 1,600 processing and packaging solutions providers occupying over 700,000 net square feet, making 2013 edition the largest PACK EXPO Las Vegas since event first opened in 1995. Attendance is expected to well exceed 26,000 manufacturing professionals from baking and snack, beverage, confectionery, pharmaceutical, and other industries.

August 2, 2013 Research released by SAE provides further evidence that Mexichem Fluor's refrigerant blends AC5 and AC6 could offer EU regulation compliant alternatives to R-134a in automotive air conditioning. Conducted by Co-operative Research Programme, administered by SAE International, and sponsored by a number of major car manufacturers, research shows that AC6 has an even greater margin of safety than R-1234yf based on its reduced flammability characteristics.
Washington approves revised interconnection procedures.

August 2, 2013 Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission issued final order approving significant revisions to state's interconnection rules. Revised rules mark 3 advances that were recommended or supported by IREC: (1) definition of "interconnection customer" now clarifies that net-metered systems can be owned by third-party; (2) multi-tiered approach to evaluating interconnection requests; and (3) eliminating requirement for external disconnect switch for Tier 1 systems.

IPC releases PCB industry results for June 2013.

August 2, 2013 According to IPC's monthly North American Printed Circuit Board Statistical Program, total North American PCB shipments decreased 3.4% in June 2013 from June 2012, and bookings decreased 6.1% year over year. Year to date, PCB industry shipments were down 4.7% and bookings were down 1.3%. Compared to previous month, PCB shipments in June were up by 12.0%, but bookings were down 3.6%. Shipments outpaced bookings in June for first time in 7 months, causing PCB book-to-bill ratio to slip to 1.05.
BIO applauds commercial production of cellulosic biofuel.

August 2, 2013 BIO congratulated INEOS Bio as it announced the start up of commercial production of cellulosic biofuel at the Indian River BioEnergy Center in Vero Beach, FL. According to Brent Erickson, Executive VP of BIO’s Industrial & Environmental Section, INEOS Bio’s biorefinery is the first to prove a biotech process successful at commercial scale. It has already created hundreds of jobs and brought economic growth – as well as renewable electricity – to its Florida community.

Wood-Boring Gribbles intrigue researchers.

August 1, 2013 Measuring 1–3 mm long, gribbles are tiny wood borers that produce their own enzyme that can efficiently devastate wood. Researchers from NREL and elsewhere hope that by studying gribbles they can learn ways to improve the process of turning biomass into fuels. Since gribbles can break down biomass into sugars, even in harsh environments, they may be able to help as the industry searches for enzymes that can thrive in salt-rich, high-solids settings.
EPA Expands Safer Chemical Ingredients with 130+ additions.

August 1, 2013 U.S. EPA added 130+ chemicals to its Safer Chemical Ingredients List. For first time, 119 chemicals that use fragrance for commercial and consumer cleaning products have been added. List of 602 chemicals provides resource for manufacturers interested in making safer products; advocates encouraging use of safer chemicals; and consumers seeking information on ingredients. Also, list serves as guide for Design for the Environment (DfE) labeled products.

August 1, 2013 Recognizing that national and economic security of the U.S. depends on reliable functioning of critical infrastructure, the President, under Executive Order 13636 "Improving the Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity" directed NIST to work with stakeholders to develop a voluntary framework for reducing cyber risks to critical infrastructure. On July 10–12, 2013, NIST held 3rd Cybersecurity Framework Workshop, hosted by University of California San Diego and the National Health ISAC.

August 1, 2013 Fraunhofer USA, together with the University of Connecticut, developed the Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation to develop advanced technologies related to energy storage, fuel cells, in-stream hydro, power management, and distribution through contract research. Fraunhofer and UConn research will concentrate on modern functional materials, such as metals, ceramics, micro- and nanostructures, as components for fuel cells and electrolyzers.
House Defense Appropriations Bill ignores sequestration.

August 1, 2013 AIA applauds passage of House Defense Appropriations Bill, which provides $512.5 billion in base funding and $85.8 billion for overseas contingency operations. However, while bill is more than $28 billion above levels mandated under Budget Control Act of 2011, it still represents a reduction of nearly $3.4 billion from Defense Department’s 2014 request for its base budget. More importantly, the bill ignores cuts that would be imposed under sequestration.

July 31, 2013 National Stormwater Calculator will help property owners, developers, landscapers, and urban planners make informed land-use decisions to protect local waterways from pollution caused by stormwater runoff. Desktop application estimates annual amount of stormwater runoff from specific site based on local soil conditions, slope, land cover, and historical rainfall records. Users can select different scenarios to learn how specific green infrastructure changes can prevent pollution.

Stephen Flynn, "we will take the industry and its customers' interest in educational events and develop it to its fullest potential in a different timeframe."
