September 13, 2013 Metal Powder Industries Federation announced inaugural conference on Additive Manufacturing with Powder Metallurgy (AMPM) will take place May 18–20, 2014 in Orlando, FL. Comprising 6 technical sessions with 3 presentations in each, conference will focus on Additive Manufacturing (AM) – process of making 3D solid object by adding successive layers of material rather than removing material by such conventional methods as cutting or drilling – with powder metallurgy.

September 13, 2013 As reported by companies participating in USMTO program, July 2013 U.S. manufacturing technology orders, which totaled $351.21 million, were down 23.6% from June and down 23.6% from July 2012. Year-to-date total of $2,925.12 million makes 2013 down 7.2% compared to 2012. According to AMT President Douglas K. Woods, such activity "is not atypical for summer months" and is concurrent with other readings. Woods also proclaimed a positive "bigger picture" for manufacturing despite seasonal dip.
TRFA announces winner of research award.

September 13, 2013 TRFA has announced that Qi An of the University of Delaware is the winner of the 4th Annual Excellence in Thermoset Polymer Research Award for paper titled “Epoxy-Based Carbon Nanotube/Fiber Hybrid Composites: Nanoscale Hybridization via Electrophoresis.” Because competition was especially close, TRFA is awarding second place prize to Zhan H. Yang, of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, for “Enhancing Mechanical Performance by Heterogeneity-Promoting Staged Fabrications.”

AASHTO Urges Amtrak, States to complete passenger rail agreements.

September 13, 2013 Paying mind to federally mandated October 16 deadline, AASHTO urged Amtrak and state DOTs to complete negotiations over capital investments and operations along state-supported intercity passenger rail corridors. AASHTO recognized commitment states have made in negotiating to complete agreements with Amtrak to sustain service, and AASHTO executive director Bud Wright added that "significant disruption in travel and mobility" will be seen if said agreements are not in place soon.

September 12, 2013 EPA has launched web-based tool, called ChemView, to significantly improve access to chemical specific regulatory information developed by EPA and data submitted under Toxic Substances Control Act. ChemView displays key health and safety data in online format that allows comparison of chemicals by use and by health or environmental effects. Search tool provides streamlined access to EPA assessments, hazard characterizations, and information on safer chemical ingredients.

At Energy Systems Integration Facility, tour participants got to view a high performance computing data center, which will house one of world's most energy efficient super-computers, dedicated to energy efficiency and renewable energy research.
EPA Launches Online Mapping Tool to promote access to EISs.

September 11, 2013 Web-based mapping tool, launched by EPA, provides public with access and information on Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) filed with EPA for major projects proposed on federal lands and other proposed federal actions. Users can click on any state for EIS list and are subsequently provided with comment letters submitted by EPA on EISs within last 60 days. Information about potential environmental, social, and economic impacts of any projects is readily available.

September 11, 2013 U.S. EPA and Coast Guard have reached agreement in principle with Carnival Corporation to develop advanced emission control technology, which will be used in waters surrounding U.S. coasts. Under said agreement, Carnival will develop and deploy new exhaust gas cleaning system on up to 32 ships over next 3 years to be used in Emission Control Areas (ECAs). New controls combine use of sulfur oxide (SOx) scrubbers with diesel particulate filters.

U.S. reaches settlement with Safeway to reduce emissions.

September 9, 2013 In settlement agreement with U.S., Safeway grocery store chain has agreed to pay $600,000 civil penalty and implement corporate-wide plan to significantly reduce emissions of ozone-depleting substances from refrigeration equipment at 659 stores nationwide, estimated to cost $4.1 million. Settlement resolves allegations that Safeway violated federal Clean Air Act by failing to promptly repair leaks of HCFC-22, and failed to keep adequate records of refrigeration equipment servicing.
