November 6, 2009 In letter to Todd Stern, ATA urges support for ICAO to lead global sectoral framework for aviation and climate change and to oppose proposal for International Air Passenger Adaptation Levy. Proposal targets airlines/passengers with exorbitant tax to fund climate-change adaptation measures in developing countries. Letter cites ICAO track record in addressing aviation environmental issues. It also says tax would remove vital airline funds and damage already financially crippled industry.

Presentations will include New Biopolymers and Biomonomer Platforms, Biobutanol, Stimulation of Methane Generation from Coal, and Commercialization of Renewable Chemicals. Renewable chemicals meet most important environmental goals, according to Brent Erickson, and in many cases, they are competitively available along with fossil-resource based chemicals.

NTSB Safety Recommendations P-09-1 through -3

November 5, 2009 NTSB issued recommendations that included conducting a comprehensive study to identify actions that can be implemented by pipeline operators to eliminate catastrophic longitudinal seam failures in electric resistance welded pipe. Based on results of this study, necessary actions should be implemented. Lastly, a program should be initiated to evaluate pipeline operators' public education programs and provide NTSB with timeline for implementation and completion of said evaluation.

November 5, 2009 Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25), which reports economic activity for equipment finance sector, showed overall new business volume for September declined 30.9% compared to same period in 2008. For 2009, it was also reported that month-to-month new business volume (NBV) increased 27.0% from August to September. Receivables over 30 days increased compared monthly and on year-over-year basis, while charge-offs also increased shaply compared to prior month and previous year.

Proposed new standard, ASTM WK26072, Practice for Inspection of Drywall in Buildings Exhibiting Indoor Air Quality Issues, will be under jurisdiction of Subcommittee C11.01 on Specifications and Test Methods for Gypsum Products, part of Committee C11.

Brown, who served as 2009 AASHTO VP and Chairman of AASHTO Standing Committee on Water Transportation, has outlined 4 areas of emphasis for 2010. Organization has also elected Susan Martinovich, P.E., of Nevada DOT, as first female VP. Martinovich currently serves as chair of AASHTO Standing Committee on Research and is member of several Transportation Research Board committees.
