June 16, 2014 In 2 papers published in The Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal Biomedical Optics Express, researchers from Netherlands and Israel describe 2 wearable devices that use changing patterns of scattered light to monitor biometrics. While one device tracks glucose concentration and dehydration levels, other monitors pulse. Glucose concentration is measured directly but noninvasively, and pulse monitoring is less sensitive to errors when while wearer is in motion.
NEMA publishes test requirements for metering devices.

June 16, 2014 NEMA has published NEMA C12.30TR-2013 Test Requirements for: Metering Devices Equipped with Service Switches. Most tests included in technical report are tailored to fit service switch type meters and originate from ANSI C12.1-2008 standard. Sections within ANSI standard have been referenced within these tests where applicable, and other tests that are specific to the service switch have been added for completeness.

EPA ensures company discloses pesticide hazards.

June 13, 2014 Liphatech, Inc., a Milwaukee pesticide manufacturer, paid $738,000 civil penalty to EPA for advertising Rozol Prairie Dog Bait without identifying it as a "restricted use" pesticide, and for making unapproved claims about the pesticide, in violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. These claims undermined instructions on the label and overstated efficacy and safety of pesticide. This is the largest penalty ever imposed by an administration law judge for FIFRA violations.
EPA announces funding for tribes to clean up diesel engines.

June 13, 2014 Part of DERA program, EPA's grant funding is available for tribal applicants to establish clean diesel projects aimed at reducing emissions from older diesel engines. EPA is making $1 million available and anticipates awarding 3 to 5 tribal assistance agreements. Projects may include school buses, transit buses, heavy-duty diesel trucks, marine engines, locomotives, energy production generators, and other diesel engines. Proposals from tribal applicants must be received by August 12, 2014.
BIO says EPA should recognize roles of biotechnology.

June 11, 2014 EPA should recognize that carbon emissions from renewable biomass are fundamentally different from those of fossil fuels and that biotechnology can and must play a key role in mitigating fossil carbon emissions, BIO noted in response to agency's Carbon Pollution Emission Guidelines for Existing Stationary Sources: Electric Utility Generating Units. That recognition should carry through to the Proposed Standards of Performance for Greenhouse Gas Emissions from New Stationary Sources.

June 10, 2014 FAA is proposing $76,000 civil penalty against Atlantic Technical Systems, Inc., for allegedly violating Hazardous Materials Regulations. FAA alleges that on Nov 11, 2013, Atlantic Technical Systems offered three, 4 L containers of isopropyl alcohol to FedEx Corp. for shipment by air to Woodstock, IL. According to FAA, company did not declare hazardous materials, and shipment was not properly classed, described, packaged, marked, labeled, and in proper condition for shipment under regulations.

June 10, 2014 Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, Airlines for America, and the TSA announced expansion of the Known Crewmember program to include Tucson International Airport and El Paso International Airport, which are now KCM’s 50th and 51st locations. KCM is a risk-based security screening program that enables TSA officers to positively verify identity and employment status of airline crewmembers. Program enhances security and allows TSA to focus on travelers who present greater risk to aviation security.

June 9, 2014 Regulatory exemptions asked for by 7 aerial photo and video production companies would allow film and television industry to use unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) with FAA approval. Demand for commercial UAS operations could lead to economic benefits, but all associated safety issues must be considered. FAA has been working to implement provisions of Section 333 of FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 and move forward with UAS integration before proposing small UAS rule.
