In letter to Todd Stern, ATA urges support for ICAO to lead global sectoral framework for aviation and climate change and to oppose proposal for International Air Passenger Adaptation Levy. Proposal targets airlines/passengers with exorbitant tax to fund climate-change adaptation measures in developing countries. Letter cites ICAO track record in addressing aviation environmental issues. It also says tax would remove vital airline funds and damage already financially crippled industry.

Presentations will include New Biopolymers and Biomonomer Platforms, Biobutanol, Stimulation of Methane Generation from Coal, and Commercialization of Renewable Chemicals. Renewable chemicals meet most important environmental goals, according to Brent Erickson, and in many cases, they are competitively available along with fossil-resource based chemicals.

Three Machine Vision Trade Associations Reach Agreement to Develop Global Industry Standards

During VISION trade fair, leaders from Automated Imaging Association, European Machine Vision Association, and Japan Industrial Imaging Association signed agreement to cooperatively develop and promote global machine vision standards. According to Jeff Burnstein, President of AIA, this will benefit machine vision users and suppliers by accelerating pace of standards development, avoiding overlapping efforts, and creating more awareness of new standards.

NTSB issued recommendations that included conducting a comprehensive study to identify actions that can be implemented by pipeline operators to eliminate catastrophic longitudinal seam failures in electric resistance welded pipe. Based on results of this study, necessary actions should be implemented. Lastly, a program should be initiated to evaluate pipeline operators' public education programs and provide NTSB with timeline for implementation and completion of said evaluation.

ELFA Monthly Leasing and Finance Index Shows NBV Increased from Aug-Sept

Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25), which reports economic activity for equipment finance sector, showed overall new business volume for September declined 30.9% compared to same period in 2008. For 2009, it was also reported that month-to-month new business volume (NBV) increased 27.0% from August to September. Receivables over 30 days increased compared monthly and on year-over-year basis, while charge-offs also increased shaply compared to prior month and previous year.

Proposed New Standard on Inspection of Drywall for Air Quality Issues to Be Developed by ASTM Gypsum Committee

During meeting, ASTM International decided to initiate formulation of proposed ASTM standard that will cover issues relating to drywall and indoor air quality. Proposed new standard, ASTM WK26072, Practice for Inspection of Drywall in Buildings Exhibiting Indoor Air Quality Issues, will be under jurisdiction of Subcommittee C11.01 on Specifications and Test Methods for Gypsum Products, part of Committee C11.

AASHTO has chosen Larry L. 'Butch' Brown of Mississippi DOT as Executive Director. Brown, who served as 2009 AASHTO VP and Chairman of AASHTO Standing Committee on Water Transportation, has outlined 4 areas of emphasis for 2010. Organization has also elected Susan Martinovich, P.E., of Nevada DOT, as first female VP. Martinovich currently serves as chair of AASHTO Standing Committee on Research and is member of several Transportation Research Board committees.

In a statement made concerning the successful launch of the Ares 1-X rocket, Marion Blakey said the first human-rated launch system to be flight tested in nearly 30 years is an important milestone in the development of a new vehicle to take humans to space after the shuttle retires. She believed Americans will support the investment that the Review of U.S. Human Spaceflight Plans Committee says is necessary for America to explore beyond low-earth orbit.

The study of university technology licensing from 1996-2007 shows $187 billion dollar positive impact on U.S. GNP and $457 billion addition to gross industrial output. From October 15-17, more than 100 attendees, including representatives from 8 countries participated in meeting in Toronto, Canada, held by ASTM International Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices.
