March 24, 2014 In support of Italian Trade Agency's (ITA) Call for Papers for 2014 Italian Machine Tool Technology Awards (IMTTA), SME Education Foundation will award scholarships to top winners. Winners of Fifth IMTTA, selected as having the best papers, will be awarded 2-week trip to Italy with activities scheduled from June 29 to July 12, 2014. Foundation scholarship is in addition to aforementioned trip. Papers should be submitted in electronic format by May 9, 2014.

March 20, 2014 ASC signed a 3-year agreement with the Adhesion Society whereby the Council will manage the Society's Annual Meeting, oversee its membership effort, and serve as the Home Office for the Society. The Council and Society previously had a 1-year agreement covering the fiscal year from June 30, 2013 through July 1, 2014. Success of the arrangement allowed the Society and Council leadership to feel comfortable with a longer term arrangement.
BIO Gives Dupont CEO 2014 George Washington Carver Award.

March 20, 2014 BIO named DuPont Chair and CEO Ellen Kullman as recipient of 2014 George Washington Carver Award for innovation in industrial biotechnology. First woman to receive this honor, Kullman accepted award "on behalf of all of the people who have worked to make DuPont a leader in industrial biotechnology." BIO's Brent Erickson lauded Kullman "for efforts to drive commercialization of industrial biotech processes and renewable, sustainable biobased products."
ATA welcomes electronic logging device proposal.

March 20, 2014 ATA officials welcomed proposal by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to mandate use of electronic logging devices in commercial trucks as potential improvement for highway safety. ATA successfully advocated for inclusion of provision mandating ELDs in most recent highway authorization law. ATA has a few concerns with some details relating to supporting document retention requirements and grandfathering of existing devices, among others, and will address those with FMCSA going forward.

March 20, 2014 Responding to rationale for Passenger Facility Charge (PFC) hike derived from FAA long-term forecast, Airlines for America's (A4A) Sharon Pinkerton called the move "a revenue grab." U.S. airports have ample resources to fund capital needs. These include investment-grade credit, "ample access" to bond market, $10.6 billion in unrestricted cash and investments (282 days of liquidity), and $4.7 billion in uncommitted funds from federal Airport and Airway Trust Fund.
FAA Seeks Comments regarding drug/alcohol testing requirement.

March 20, 2014 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) seeks comments on issues related to an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) that would require drug and alcohol testing of maintenance personnel who work on aircraft operated by U.S. air carriers (Part 121) in facilities outside USA. Public comment period will help FAA develop proposed rule as well as assess its likely economic impact. Comments will be accepted for 60 days after publication in Federal Register.

EPA Reaches Agreement to stop harmful flea/tick collar production.

March 20, 2014 Agreement to cancel flea and tick pet collars containing propoxur has been reached between U.S. EPA, Sergeant's Pet Care Products, Inc., and Wellmark International. Under cancellation agreement, manufacturers are allowed to continue to produce said pet collars until April 1, 2015 but will not be allowed to distribute them after April 1, 2016. Agreement was reached as result of EPA's risk assessment regarding risks to children from exposure to pet collars containing propoxur.
EPA to lift suspension and debarment of BP.

March 20, 2014 EPA and BP executed agreement resolving all suspension and debarment actions against BP that barred company from doing business with the federal government following guilty plea in the Deepwater Horizon disaster of April 2010. Under agreement, BP is required to retain an independent auditor approved by EPA who will conduct an annual review and report on BP’s compliance with agreement. There are also specific provisions addressing ethics compliance, corporate governance, and process safety.

March 20, 2014 According to March 2014 PMA Business Conditions Report, 38% of participants predict slight improvement during next 3 months, 54% anticipate no change, and 8% believe economic activity will decline. Reported current average daily shipping compared to levels 3 months ago was up for 48% of participants, same for 37%, and down for 15%. Regarding incoming orders during next 3 months, 44% of companies forecasted increase while 45% didn't expect any change and 11% predicted decrease.

March 19, 2014 EPA announced 3 grants to facilitate integrated pest management practices in schools. IPM helps prevent pests from becoming a threat by addressing underlying causes that enable pests to thrive in schools. These actions, such as repairing water leaks, adding weather stripping to windows, and installing door sweeps, reduce pesticide use and treatment costs as well as water and energy costs. Grants will go to Texas A&M Agrilife Extension, University of Arizona, and Michigan State University.

March 18, 2014 BIO has long been a supporter of the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit program and commended Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for deciding to halt movement on several proposals in the Medicare Part D draft rule. They include: proposal to eliminate protected class status for certain drug classes, proposal to reduce the number of Part D plans a particular plan sponsor may offer, and proposal to clarify non-interference provisions.
