PMA July Report shows expectations of improved conditions.

July 30, 2008 According to the July 2008 PMA Business Conditions Report, 17% of participants expect activity to improve during the next 3 months, while 27% of companies predict an increase in incoming orders. Current average daily shipping levels remained unchanged in July, with 19% of participants reporting levels above what they were 3 months ago. Also, the number of metalforming companies with a portion of their workforce on short time or layoff decreased to 17%.
ANSI to publish voluntary standards.

ANSI partners with CCX for greenhouse gas accreditation program.

July 30, 2008 As part of continuing effort to enhance its accreditation program for greenhouse gas verification bodies, ANSI has signed Memorandum of Understanding with Chicago Climate Exchange. Through MoU, CCX and ANSI pledge to cooperate in creation of accreditation program for GHG VBs concerning CCX emissions offset and commercial forestry projects. CCX/ANSI program will assess competence of GHG VBs against multiple requirements, including those developed by ISO.
ANSI petitions to accredit crane certification programs.

July 30, 2008 In California, crane operator certification bodies are required to be accredited by Cal/OSHA-approved accreditation body. ANSI Personnel Certification Accreditation Program is petitioning Cal/OSHA Standards Board to be recognized as one of these accreditation bodies. According to Dr. Roy Swift, program director for ANSI's personnel certifier accreditation program, ANSI's program has accredited 23 personnel certification bodies and has over 35 in process of being accredited.
ASHRAE announces scholarship recipients.

July 30, 2008 To encourage and assist HVAC&R education, ASHRAE has announced recipients of 16 scholarships totaling $85,000 for 2008-09 academic year. Reuben Trane Scholarships provide $10,000 over 2 years, while Willis H. Carrier Scholarship provides $10,000 for 1 year, and Frank M. Coda Memorial Scholarship offers $5,000 for one year. Eight other 1-year scholarships, each for $3,000 will also be awarded. List of recipients can be found in full press release.

July 30, 2008 After meeting at Farnborough International Airshow, top leaders from aerospace companies in U.S. and Europe agreed to close collaboration on ethical business practices as well as efforts to improve aviation's impact on environment. CEOs also discussed efforts to improve export control systems. Two sides concurred that aerospace should support open and fair markets, and agreed to hold international forum on business conduct each year to mark progress and plan strategy.
AIA launches Web-based film series on popular architecture.

In each episode, AIA architects discuss the architectural masterworks and encourage public discussion and opinions.

Participants established ISECG secretariat to be initially hosted by European Space Agency; plans for conducting effective public engagement; and development of tools for sharing information on exploration capabilities and mission plans across agencies.

Program offered educators in math and science relevant tools for teaching that are both standards-based and challenging for students. Workshop goals allowed teachers to access and explore NASA Earth system science data and develop lesson plans to share data with their students.

July 30, 2008 Created using nearly 10 years of data from NASA's QuikSCAT satellite, maps have many potential uses including planning location of offshore wind farms to convert wind energy into electric energy. According to Paul Dimotakis, chief technologist at JPL, wind energy has potential to provide 10-15% of future world energy requirements. If ocean areas with high winds were tapped for wind energy, they could potentially generate 500-800 W of energy per square meter.

May stated that bill would accomplish goal of putting reasonable limits on excessive oil speculation, which significantly drives up fuel prices. Bill creates distinction between legitimate hedgers and those who are in market for purely speculative purposes. It would close Foreign Board of Trade or London loopholes by requiring transparency and limits similar to those for trading on U.S. exchanges.
