NAM Economist says exports/investments increased in June.

July 30, 2008 David Huether, Chief Economist of the NAM, said exports and business investments, "may be picking up some momentum," following a report by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The report shows that new orders for manufactured durable goods increased by 0.8% in June, a quarter of which was caused by a 1.8% jump in orders for motor vehicles and parts. Other orders increased by 0.6%, while machinery and electrical equipment orders rose by 3%, accounting for 70% of the rise in orders.
ITC finds industrial biotechnology is key to competitiveness.

July 30, 2008 BIO applauded findings of U.S. International Trade Commission fact-finding report, "Industrial Biotechnology: Development and Adoption by the U.S. Chemical and Biofuel Industries." Report finds R&D expenditures in biofuels increased 400% from 2004 to 2007, and R&D expenditures for biobased chemicals were much larger than for biofuels, reaching $3.4 billion. Industrial biotechnology can benefit U.S. economy by allowing substitution of liquid biofuels for conventional liquid fuels.

July 30, 2008 During Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy, scheduled for Sept 10-12 in Vancouver, companies and scientists will present research advances in sustainable biobased processes and products. Scheduled plenary speaker is Mike Burnside, President and CEO, Catchlight Energy, LLC, a Chevron-Weyerhaeuser Joint Venture formed in February 2008 to research and develop technology for converting cellulose-based biomass into economical, low-carbon biofuels.
ATA responds to House decision on petroleum reserve.

July 30, 2008 Disappointed in the House decision not to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), ATA President and CEO James C. May said, "A staggered release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve would have both short- and long-term impact on reducing the price of oil." May added that a Congressional package should stop excessive speculation in the oil commodities markets, remain focused on environmentally sound supply-side solutions, and immediately begin releasing 10% of the SPR.

July 30, 2008 Frank Vargo, International VP of the NAM, spoke in behalf of U.S. manufacturers at the Doha negotiations held in Geneva, Switzerland. Vargo led off his statement by saying "Manufactured goods are 60 percent of all world trade. The rapidly-growing emerging manufacturing powers of Brazil, India, and China have benefited from the World Trade Organization (WTO) rounds of trade liberalization and can benefit more from the current Doha Round - but only if there is a Doha Round."
NTSB issues recommendations to European Aviation Safety Agency.

July 30, 2008 According to NTSB, European Aviation Safety Agency should require all operators of Airbus A320 family aircraft to modify aircraft in accordance with Airbus Service Bulletin A320-24-1120 to provide automatic reconfiguration of AC essential bus power supply in event that AC 1 electrical bus fails. Standby attitude indicator should be powered by additional power source that will last for minimum of 30 minutes in event of AC 1 electrical bus failure.

Outline for SPR includes release light, sweet crude oil first; restore U.S. commercial inventories to previous year's levels; dedicate revenues to development of alternative energy sources; and set up framework for use of SPR when conditions warrant.
NAM welcomes senate bill to protect intellectual property.

July 30, 2008 John Engler, President of NAM, commended Senators Patrick Leahy, Arlen Specter, Evan Bayh, and George Voinovich for introducing "Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights Act of 2008" that would strengthen defense of IP. Counterfeiting and piracy of intellectual property costs economy upwards of $250 billion a year. Legislation will toughen civil and criminal laws against counterfeiting, provide more resources for enforcement, and seek to improve coordination of enforcement efforts.

July 30, 2008 John Engler, President of NAM, commended members of House for overwhelming vote to transfer more than $8 billion to Highway Trust Fund, a measure that will help avert potential $14 billion cut in highway spending in 2009. House voted 387-37 in favor of H.R. 6532 sponsored by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY). Highway trust fund, which receives most of its funding from federal tax on gasoline, is facing its first deficit in more than 25 years.

July 30, 2008 According to NAM President and CEO, John Engler, U.S. Department of Interior's proposal for commercial oil shale leasing on public lands in Western states is a necessary step forward to increase America's energy supply. Oil shale is found in rock formations below ground in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. Estimates of oil resources available in oil shale range from 1.2-1.8 trillion barrels, of which estimated 800 billion barrels is recoverable, according to Bureau of Land Management.

Large-system build was critical test of 3 Gb/s SAS functionality and interoperability, and allowed new products and products that have been revised to be tested in environments with other products from component suppliers. Second generation 6Gb/s SAS devices underwent significant physical layer testing to establish baseline interoperability.

July 30, 2008 According to month-end trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control products, U.S. distributors' overall sales of PT/MC products declined 7.2% in May 2008 compared to April 2008. Canadian distributors also reported decrease, dropping 5.4% in May 2008. U.S. manufacturers' sales increased slightly in May 2008, with 0.9% gain compared to April 2008, while Canadian manufacturer's sales declined in May 2008 with 10.3% loss compared to March 2008.

July 30, 2008 In the Q2 survey, only 38% of large manufacturing companies had a positive business outlook for their company, according to David Huether. Based on responses of 314 NAM member companies, the survey showed that 37% of respondants expected a recession in 2008, while 79% reported that rising import costs have increased costs of domestic materials and supplies.
