September 13, 2007 Actively supported by RIA, HB 1104 Insurance Consumer Freedom of Choice Bill was signed by Governor Bill Ritter and successfully sponsored by Rep. Dorothy Butcher (D). Bill prevents insurance companies from dictating which restoration company must be used in covered property repair insurance loss. House and Senate concurred that passage of bill would safeguard public against monopolies, trusts and market barriers, as well as foster and encourage competition.

September 13, 2007 At IBIE 2007, next generation of automation equipment will be shown, designed to improve accuracy, consistency, and output for baking operations worldwide. LeMatic, Inc. will roll out equipment that incorporates robotic picking, packaging, and palletizing, as well as vision systems that use inspection, counting, and criteria-based recognition. Workhorse Automation will display BISSC certified single-level Automatic Pan Storage and Retrieval Transporter System.

September 13, 2007 Produced by ABA and BEMA, IBIE 2007 will fill 1 million sq ft at Orange County Convention Center with latest technologies, equipment, and product introductions. Interactive e-Learning program was developed around bakers' needs for on-demand, web-based training for plant equipment and systems, and uses video clips, quizzes, and other exercises to keep participants engaged. Program will be demonstrated using Colborne's robotic Bread Basket Loading system at AIB and Colborne booths.

September 13, 2007 At its 62nd Annual Convention and Exhibition in Orlando, Fla, RIA announced its slate of officers for 2007. Gary Dooner, CR, of Du All Service Contractors, Inc. will serve as RIA president, succeeding Brian Spiegel, CR, of Spiegel Certified Restoration, who will serve as immediate past president. Ben Yanker of Buffalo Restoration, Inc will be association vice president, while Graham Dick of Genesis Restorations Ltd will serve as secretary, and Ron Reese of Ree Construction will serve as Treasurer.

September 13, 2007 Through cooperative alliance, Laser Institute of America and OSHA provide members with important information to help prevent exposure to laser beam and non-beam hazards in industrial and medical workplaces. Alliance produced Laser Safety Information Bulletin, which was also developed into podcast by LIA. Members of LIA also contribute laser safety information to online editorial boards on four of OSHA's Safety and Health Topics pages.

September 12, 2007 The RIA has awarded the Phoenix Award for Innovation in Restoration to Begal Enterprises, Inc. of Rockville, Maryland. Following a flood on June 24, 2006 at the EPA headquarters in Washington D.C., the company extracted water and shoveled out mud, then built special containment units to house undamaged records and protect them. Full scale restoration efforts removed 72 tons of debris, while EPA tests showed that 98% of samples passed and 90% came back with zero organisms present.

September 12, 2007 Through Agreement of Collaboration, AWWA and National Association of Water and Sanitation of Mexico will share expertise and resources. Areas of collaboration will include examining existing programs and other resources for potential cooperative efforts; developing cooperative arrangements for promoting each other's programs and materials; maintaining regular communication between leaders of associations; and looking for new programs to develop cooperatively.

September 11, 2007 From September 20 through November 5, 2007, the ASCE/EWRI will conduct a public comment period on revisions to its ASCE 33-01 Comprehensive Transboundary International Water Quality Management Agreement. Providing a framework that riparian governments can adopt or modify, the standard covers declaration of purposes and policies, general provisions, administration, transboundary water quality management, financing, dispute resolution, as well as implementation standards and criteria.

September 11, 2007 The ZigBee® Alliance announced that its Open House and Exposition in China will be held September 13, 2007 in Beijing. The 1-day event will feature live demonstrations, seminars, and lectures on ZigBee and how it is used in homes, commercial buildings, and industrial plants. With ZigBee products and services on display from various member companies, the event will include technical sessions, application profiles, product certifications, and a ZigBee panel discussion.

September 10, 2007 From September 20 to November 5, 2007, the ASCE/SEI will conduct a public comment period on the first supplement to its ASCE 41-06 Seismic Rehabilitation of Existing Buildings Standard. The purpose of the standard is to specify nationally applicable provisions for the rehabilitation of buildings to improve seismic performance, while its supplement covers general requirements; concrete; and architectural, mechanical, and electrical components.

September 10, 2007 The ASCE Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) will hold the Symposium on Emerging Developments in Multi-Hazard Engineering on September 18, 2007. The symposium will address different facets of multi-hazard considerations in infrastructure applications and will work to establish the quantitative methods and guidelines needed to promote their use. It will include various session topics and close with a panel discussion on the future of multi-hazard engineering.

September 10, 2007 ASHRAE has published ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 105-2007, Standard Methods of Measuring, Expressing, and Comparing Building Energy Performance, which provides a method of energy performance comparison that can be used for any building, proposed or existing, and allows different methods of energy analysis to be compared. It also identifies key characteristics that users should consider reporting when performance comparisons are of interest.

September 10, 2007 ASHRAE awarded the first healthcare facility design professional certification to Ildefonso Bayron, Jr., who, along with 28 others, passed the exam at ASHRAE's 2007 Annual Meeting. The certification program identifies individuals who have mastered a body of knowledge covering successful design and operation of healthcare facilities. The technical content for the exam was developed in cooperation with the ASHE and the AHA.

September 10, 2007 The ASCE and the ACMA signed a 3-year agreement to develop a prestandard for Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for Pultruded Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composite Structures. LRFD standard will help structural engineers and architects use FRP composites in the design of building and transportation structures. With Dr. Mehdi Zarghamee as the coordinator for the project, the expected release date of the pre-standard is September 2010.
