August 4, 2008 The RIA hosted a 1-day meeting of prominent industry individuals on Thursday, July 24, 2008 with Charles (Chuck) Rumbarger, CAE, facilitating the meeting discussion and assisting the group in developing a Heads of Agreement. Rumbarger said that associations are a creation of law and, to be legally compliant, they must conform to various authorities. He also addressed issues such as organizational transitions, aggregation of resources, and inter-organizational cooperation.
Air Transport Association voices support for HR 6604 bill.

August 1, 2008 According to ATA President and CEO, James C. May, HR 6604 bill to amend Commodities and Exchange Act is a good first step to limit excessive speculation. ATA strongly supports firm position limits for energy commodities in over-the-counter market. OTC position limits in this bill are discretionary, but should be mandatory.
ATA disappointed with Congressional failure to pass HR 6604.

May, ATA was disappointed that House of Representatives did not pass Commodity Markets Transparency and Accountability Act, which would have been first step toward curbing excessive speculation that has contributed to massive run-up in oil prices. ATA will still continue to urge strong, bipartisan action by Congress on both speculation and energy development.
Committee reinstates limited SBIR grant eligibility.

August 1, 2008 Small businesses that are majority-backed by venture capital, many of which are producing biotech therapies and cures, will be eligible for portion of Small Business Innovation Research grants under bill reported out of Senate Committee on Small Business today. Historically, SBIR program has provided critical financial support to biotech companies while its rigorous review process has conferred high level of credibility. Of 252 FDA-approved biologics, 32% received at least one SBIR/STTR award.
A&WMA announces source review workshop.

August 1, 2008 The A&WMA will offer its workshop, Clearing the Air on NSR, September 18-19, in Orlando, FL. It will discuss the regulatory requirements for the New Source Review Rule for fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) issued by the EPA in May 2008, information relevant to a 2007 U.S. Supreme Court decision, and key provisions to the New Source Review regulations. Workshop leaders will review requirements of the current NSR program and focus on expected changes.

WTO Geneva Meeting shows divides still too broad.

July 31, 2008 In response to end of World Trade Organization discussions in Geneva, NAM President John Engler released statement saying that WTO members declined to agree on terms that could have provided greater opportunities for trade of manufactured goods. China and India reiterated how they could not lower their barriers, but insisted U.S. must lower theirs. However, other developing countries, especially Brazil, made it plain that they were prepared to enter into give and take negotiations.

IPC Survey shows electronics companies unprepared for REACH.

July 30, 2008 IPC's recent survey on REACH Preparedness in the North American and European Interconnect Industry shows that over 40% of manufacturing and purchasing personnel do not understand how the REACH regulation will affect their companies. Only 18.3% of companies have identified and/or inventoried all product substances, while 60.5% of chemical supplier respondents are planning to register or preregister them. IPC has scheduled various programs to inform companies on the REACH regulation.

July 30, 2008 Developed by engineers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, tongue-drive system allows people with severe disabilities to control their environments with their tongue. ISO/TS 11405:2003, Dental materials - Testing of adhesion to tooth structure was used for testing adhesive materials for the device. Other standards used were IEEE Std 802.15.4-2006 and BSR/IEEE 802.15.6-200x, which offers guidelines for wireless communication devices used inside the human body.

July 30, 2008 LeRoy Jones, program director for the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP), testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means, Subcommittee on Health. The testimony detailed initiatives funded by the U.S. HHS to accelerate electronic medical record interoperability efforts. Also discussed was progress being made by the Statewide Health Information Network of New York (SHIN-NY) and the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).

July 30, 2008 A virtual reality technology allowing researchers to study trucker fatigue is being developed using standards such as INCITS/ISO/IEC 14478-1-1998, which supports virtual reality environments. Another standard being used to help develop the technology is INCITS/ISO/IEC 14478-4-1998, which describes the construction of, presentation of, and the interaction with multimedia information. The standards were developed by INCITS, ANSI Technical Advisory Group administrator for JTC 1 SC 24.
Workers call on Congress to extend R&D Tax Credit.

July 30, 2008 More than 2,000 employees from U.S. research-dependent companies of all sizes urged U.S. Congress to renew and extend Research and Development Tax Credit, which expired on December 31, 2007. Tax credit has spurred billions of dollars in innovation-producing American investments and jobs since it was created more than 25 years ago. Thirty-nine states and 74 companies are represented in letter to Congress.

July 30, 2008 According to NAM's VP for International Economic Affairs, Frank Vargo, NAM has agreed that terms of Lamy paper were sufficient basis on which to move ahead with Non-Agricultural Market Access negotiations, but only if Brazil, China, and India agree to join on Annex Z indicating their willingness to participate in negotiating sectoral agreements. Without their participation in Annex Z, NAM sees little point in moving ahead because balance would not be possible.

July 30, 2008 Passed by U.S. House of Representatives by vote of 272 to 152, provision included in Housing Bill will provide companies limited investment incentive by allowing them to utilize accumulated AMT or R&D credits in lieu of bonus depreciation to which they would otherwise by entitled. Many biotech companies whose products have not yet made their way to market will be in stronger position to carry out clinical trials and product development because of this provision.
