NASA hosts international meeting for lunar science discussions.

August 11, 2008 During meeting, representatives from space agencies in 9 countries discussed cooperation on International Lunar Network, which is designed to gradually place 6-8 fixed or mobile science stations on lunar surface. Stations will form second-generation robotic science network to replace hardware left by Apollo Program to study moon's surface and interior. Representatives considering participation agreed on statement of intent as first step in planning.
AAMA validates testing protocols for wind-driven rain resistance.

August 8, 2008 AAMA has begun 12-month review to evaluate AAMA 520 Voluntary Specification for Rating the Severe Wind-Driven Rain Resistance of Windows, Doors, and Unit Skylights. Goal of AAMA 520 is to better replicate hurricane conditions using rapid pulsating test with computer-controlled cycling of high and low pressures. Final document is expected to be published next summer, well in advance of 2009 hurricane season.

August 8, 2008 Physicists at JILA, a joint institute of NIST and University of Colorado at Boulder, use photoemission spectroscopy to study superfluidity: how atoms in Fermi gas behave as they cross over from acting like Bose Einstein Condensate to behaving like pairs of separated electrons in superconductor. Technique simultaneously probes energy and momentum, allowing scientists to study microscopics involved in pairing of two atoms.

August 8, 2008 To help engineers improve process designs, NIST research paper details fundamental processes involved in extracting sugars from biomass. With enzymes to speed reactions, team used calorimetry and chromatography to measure thermodynamic property values of several reactions associated with breakdown of cellulosic and hemicellulosic substances. Data obtained in investigation represent small but significant step toward maximizing efficiency of biomass utilization.

August 4, 2008 According to NTSB, FAA should install and maintain weather cameras at critical areas of air tour routes within Misty Fjords National Monument and other scenic areas in Southeast Alaska that are frequently traveled by air tour operators. FAA should also develop permanent mechanism to provide en route and ground-based observations of air tour flights in Southeast Alaska at least once a month during tour season to ensure operators are adhering to safe flying practices.
