November 13, 2008 So far, more than 325 exhibitors, or 85% of capacity, have signed on to participate in the 2009 IPC APEX EXPO(TM) at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Convention Center in Las Vegas. The event, to take place March 31-April 2, is expected to draw over 10,000 executives and engineers/managers representing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), printed board (PCB) companies, and electronics manufacturing services providers.
AASHTO Video addresses U.S. engineer shortfall program.

November 12, 2008 According to Bureau of Labor Statistics study, America could face shortfall of 160,000 engineers by 2016. AASHTO launched Transportation and Civil Engineering program back in 1991 to begin addressing anticipated shortage, and has now produced video, which features students from several states who have learned about civil engineering through TRAC's National Bridge Design and Build Competition. In video, state winners vie for top national prizes and bragging rights.

November 12, 2008 Developed by ISO technical committee ISO/TC 204, ISO/TS 14823:2008 provides system of standardized codes for existing signs and pictograms that deliver traffic and traveler information. Through specification's coding system, on-board units, variable message signs, personal computers, public access computer terminals, and other media systems will display pictorial details that are helpful to travelers, including traffic, parking, and public transportation information.

November 12, 2008 Use of electron beams for food purification is supported by national and international standards, and guidelines for research on this technology are provided in ISO/ASTM 51900:2002. Document covers minimum requirements for dosimetry and absorbed-dose validation needed to conduct research on irradiation of food and agricultural products. Standard gives guidelines to scientists who aim to establish quantitative relationship between absorbed dose and relevant effects in these products.

November 12, 2008 To help prevent or delay diabetes, several national and international standards are in place to facilitate recommended monitoring of dietary intake. ISO Technical Committee 34, Food Products, offers information on fat content of foods, including meat, milk, and cheese. Another ISO standard, ISO 10504:1998, provides information on sugars that are found in many prepared foods. ASTM F2106-03 offers guidelines for treadmills, while ASTM F1250-00(2006) addresses stationary bicycles.
NACD files comments on DOT hazardous materials proposal.

November 12, 2008 The NACD filed comments with the PHMSA on a notice of proposed rulemaking to narrow the list of materials subject to security plan requirements under DOT HM-232 regulations. Narrowing this list "to those that have the most serious potential to be effectively used in a terrorist attack will focus limited resources on the areas of greatest concern," said Jennifer Gibson. The comments also urged PHMSA and TSA to develop identical lists and to have risk assessment on specific routes.

May, said that Belgian government's air ticket tax proposal was fashioned as environmental measure, but that none of the funds collected would have gone to environmental projects. It will also support other ASTM committees in activities that include sustainability issues.

NTSB to hold 3-day public hearing on EMS operations.

November 11, 2008 On Feb 3, 2009, NTSB will hold public hearing on safety of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services operations. There has been a rise in number of EMS accidents and Safety Board believes some of these accidents could have been prevented if recommendations were implemented. Hearing will include pilots, medical personnel, managers, and FAA, and will cover topics such as operational structure and models, flight operations, aircraft safety equipment, training, and oversight.
