NEMA-Championed CO Bill clears California legislature.

September 15, 2008 On August 21, 2008, California legislature gave final stamp of approval to NEMA-endorsed legislation (SB 1386) to require installation of carbon monoxide devices in all dwelling units intended for human occupancy, including homes, apartments, and hotels. By enacting SB 1386, California will become 3rd state this year to codify CO protection, joining Wisconsin and North Carolina. Currently, 17 states and numerous localities have some type of CO requirement.

FAA awards controller training contract to Raytheon.

September 15, 2008 To support agency in training air traffic controllers, FAA awarded Raytheon $437 million, 10-year contract, under which Raytheon will be responsible for helping train controllers from time they're hired and throughout their career. This includes conducting resident Academy qualification and specialized training, supporting classroom and simulation training in field, developing and maintaining training materials, and providing administrative support for training.
ATA responds to DOT report on aviation safety.

Lighting Systems Index posts quarterly gain.

September 15, 2008 NEMA's Lighting Systems Index increased 1.5% between 1st and 2nd quarters of 2008. Although this marks second consecutive quarter that shipments expanded, index remains 3.5% off its level from 1 year ago and more than 8% from peak observed at beginning of 2006. Among index's 5 segments, domestic shipments rose for fixtures, ballasts, and miniature lamps on year-over-year basis, while emergency lighting systems and miniature lamps saw shipments contract compared to 2nd quarter of 2007.
Motors Index registers modest gain in 2nd quarter of 2008.

September 15, 2008 According to NEMA's Motors Shipments Index, domestic shipments of motors increased 1.1% during 2nd quarter of 2008. Despite quarter-to-quarter increase, broader trend in motor demand remains on downward trajectory as index fell 5.1% on year-over-year basis and has declined in 6 of 7 quarters. Fractional horsepower motors remain weakest market segment, while demand for integral horsepower motors was at high level in Q2, and has registered only 1 quarter of declining shipments in past 4 years.

Coalition, NAM board member Drew Greenblatt urged Congress to provide relief to small business owners and their employees by passing health IT legislation immediately. Patients, practitioners, and employers unveiled a joint letter to Congress signed by 180 businesses, associations, patient groups, and non-profit organizations. Greenblatt also pointed out that health IT legislation is awaiting action in the House and Senate.

AASHTO addresses funding crisis for highway construction.

The TSCP was created by TIA with the help of ANSI, consumer advocates, conformity assessment experts, toy companies, and retailers to improve toy safety and implement the new federal law requiring that manufacturers have their toy products tested by a qualified lab and certify that they meet safety standards.
