Ministerial Meeting must await sectoral agreement consensus.

December 10, 2008 According to NAM President and CEO, John Engler, Doha Round NAMA negotiating text shows that gaps in industrial trade negotiations have not been closed, and NAM does not view text as basis for agreement. NAM has been consistent in its view that Brazil, China, and India must participate in major sectoral agreements to eliminate tariffs in sectors such as industrial machinery, chemicals, and electrical/electronics. However, latest text shows they are not yet willing to do this.

December 10, 2008 According to AMT and AMTDA, October U.S. manufacturing technology consumption totaled $273.85 million, which was down 43.4% from September and 32.2% from total of $404.36 million reported for October 2007. With year-to-date total of $3,802.41 million, 2008 is up 8.2% compared with 2007. These numbers and all data in report are based on totals of actual data reported by companies participating in United States Manufacturing Technology Consumption program.

Following introductory remarks by CFFC chairman Harold Lin, Sam DeKey of National Instruments provided an update on current FOUNDATION fieldbus developments around the world. Also, Xie HuaiRen described various fieldbus applications across China's petrochemical industry. Other presentations were led by Zhang YiMin, Gao Cai, Wang Shengli, and Ye Yingmin.

IPC releases PCB industry statistics for October 2008.

December 9, 2008 Based on its North American Printed Circuit Board Statistical Program, the IPC reports a decrease in rigid PCB shipments and bookings in October 2008 compared to October 2007, as well as over the previous month, while flexible circuit shipments increased in both timeframes. Combined, both decreased in shipments, although the combined book-to-bill ratio increased slightly to 0.96. A ratio of more than 1.00 suggests that current demand is ahead of supply.
GAO releases report on genetically engineered crops.

December 8, 2008 Released by U.S. Government Accountability Office, report makes minor recommendations on how USDA, FDA, and EPA can better coordinate their efforts regarding regulation of genetically engineered crops. According to BIO's Sharon Bomer Lauritsen, BIO and member companies are confident in rigorous testing and approval regimes of biotech products put in place by government authorities. GAO's recommendation for new monitoring of products is unnecessary and not a prudent use of government resources.
Transportation Projects could put millions to work.

December 8, 2008 President-elect Barack Obama is pledging to put millions of Americans to work by building and repairing nation's highways and bridges. According to John Horsley, Executive Director of AASHTO, survey of state ready-to-go transportation projects is has identified more than 5,000 projects worth $64 billion. These projects are considered ready-to-go because they could be under contract within 180 days, supporting estimated 1.8 million American jobs, if funding were made available.
FAA breaks ground for new Air Traffic Control Command Center.

December 8, 2008 In 2011, nation's air traffic control system will move to state-of-the-art facility near Warrenton, VA. Command center's main mission is management of entire airspace system to balance demand with capacity, and to deal with weather and other potential disruptions. It will continue to oversee nation's entire air traffic control system, including air traffic control towers, approach and departure facilities, and high-altitude control centers.

Revision A also provides expanded coverage of adjacency concepts for isolating testing as well as new requirements for resistive and indirect continuity and isolating testing.
TIA supports electronic registration for tires.

December 8, 2008 The NHTSA rule allows registration of new tires purchased from independent tire dealers to be done electronically. Taking effect on January 27, 2009, it is expected to help alert consumers of any potential recalls or other similar actions as well as increase registration rates. Consumers can also register new tires themselves. According to TIA Executive VP Roy Littlefield, the rule will help ensure that people are not driving on unsafe tires.
ATA announces new chairman of Board of Directors.

December 8, 2008 The AAMA feedback, in relation to fenestration products, included comments from John Lewes, who encouraged collaboration with the DOE and tailoring of the program to the consumer. Based on this, the AAMA and WDMA submitted a letter to the DOE detailing the need for a simpler program, with inefficiencies of existing products and affordability being addressed. In a separate letter, the AAMA proposed various other supplemental recommendations. The AAMA Skylight Council also submitted comments.
AAMA releases paper on vinyl window and door recycling.

December 8, 2008 Avoiding the Landfill: The Recycling of Vinyl Windows and Doors, released by the VMC of the AAMA, is based on a study which determined that a successful recycling program needs to include windows/doors of all material types. The paper notes the recycling appeal of vinyl and that North America has the appropriate infrastructure for a vinyl recycling program. Suggesting funding support from window/door manufacturers, it also notes the success of the European vinyl industry recycling initiative.
