At Alcoa Technical Center, Davis focuses on analytical chemistry to support Alcoa Research and Development projects, laboratory quality system implementation, and technical management.

December 23, 2008 Michael R. Withers, VP of ride engineering for Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale, CA, has been named to ASTM International board of directors for 2009-2011. An ASTM International member since 2000, Withers currently serves as vice chair of Subcommittee F24.24 on Design and Manufacture, a part of Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices. In addition, he is serving as project manager for Global Ride Safety Enhancement Program for Disney Theme Parks and Resorts.

December 22, 2008 According to annual report submitted to ASTM International by COGUANOR, several ASTM standards are being used by COGUANOR, the national standards body of Guatemala within Ministry of Economy, to develop national standards. Since MOU signing between ASTM and COGUANOR, more than 100 ASTM standards for steel, cement and concrete, petroleum, road materials, roofing, plastics, mechanical testing, electronics, and plastic piping have been adopted, adapted, or referenced in national standards.
IEC develops certification program for Ex industries.

December 22, 2008 IEC is introducing international scheme for certification of personnel who work with equipment, installations, and servicing used by industries that deal with explosives. Program allows Ex industries to assess candidate's qualifications in working with explosives through single, unified system accepted across national borders. Assessment will determine whether person can properly implement safety requirements detailed in IEC 60079 and IEC 61241.

NTSB issues Safety Alert on flying in icy conditions.

December 22, 2008 Titled "Activate Leading-Edge Deice Boots As Soon As Airplanes Enter Icing Conditions," NTSB Safety Alert is intended to increase airplane icing visibility and address procedures taught regarding accumulation of ice before activating deice boots. It states that leading-edge boots should be activated immediately, unless flight literature suggests otherwise. If so, pilots should monitor airspeed and handling qualities as well as limit use of autopilot.

December 19, 2008 Developed by ASTM International Committee D35 on Geosynthetics, standard D7465, "Specification for Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer Sheet Used in Geomembrane Applications," fills need for internationally recognized standard to ensure that EPDM sheet material received by customers is consistent regardless of manufacturer. D7465 will enable engineers to compare like materials when selecting EPDM for lining applications.
