June 18, 2013 Researchers from the U.K., NREL, and the University of Kentucky have published a paper describing novel cellulose-degrading enzyme from a marine wood borer Limnoria quadripunctata, commonly known as the gribble. Gribbles exhibit a relatively unique ability to produce their own enzymes instead of using symbiotic microbes to break down the biomass they eat. New biomass-degrading enzymes from novel sources such as the gribble may prove beneficial to biofuels industry.

Wyoming DOT supports fuel tax increase.

June 18, 2013 First increase in Wyoming's fuel taxes in 15 yr will take effect July 1, allowing Wyoming State Department of Transportation to fully adopt the pavement preservation philosophy it began in 2011. In new Two-Minute State DOT Update video, WYDOT Director John Cox tells Transportation TV the 10-cents-per-gallon increase is expected to raise an additional $47.5 million a year to improve and preserve state's highways. WYDOT manages 6,859 miles of roadway throughout the state.

FAA asks fuel producers to submit proposals for fuel options.

June 17, 2013 FAA has asked world's fuel producers to submit proposals for fuel options that would help general aviation industry make transition to unleaded fuel. FAA is committed to development of a new unleaded fuel by 2018 that would minimize impact of replacing 100 octane low-lead fuel. FAA will assess viability of candidate fuels in terms of impact on existing fleet, production and distribution infrastructure, impact on environment, toxicology, and economic considerations.

June 17, 2013 Calling upon Congress and President Obama to use upcoming budget cycle to reverse sequestration budget cuts, AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey cited "two huge waves" threatening the industrial base. First wave identified by Blakey was $37 billion dollar sequester "which falls heaviest against investment accounts," and second wave pertained to potential strikes "if current law holds and the fiscal year 2014 budget is hit by an even larger sequestration amount of $55 billion."
