November 12, 2008 Citing reports that U.S. automakers are on verge of financial ruin amid massive 3rd quarter losses, AMT President, Bob Simpson, requested immediate legislative action to help Detroit's Big Three recover from worst sales reported in 17 years. Ford, GM, and Chrysler employ more than one half million workers. Those auto jobs and more than 4 million jobs with companies in auto industry supply chain represent about a third of all manufacturing jobs in United States.

ATA applauds Belgian's decision to drop air ticket tax.

May, said that Belgian government's air ticket tax proposal was fashioned as environmental measure, but that none of the funds collected would have gone to environmental projects. Taxes ultimately would have interfered with investment in more fuel-efficient and greenhouse gas-efficient technologies.

November 11, 2008 ASTM announced formation of ASTM Committee E60 on Sustainability, which results from cooperative efforts of U.S. EPA and cross industry stakeholders who share mutual goals for global sustainable development. Committee will offer forum where stakeholders come together to create consensus standards that will promote and integrate sustainable development across multiple industry sectors. It will also support other ASTM committees in activities that include sustainability issues.

Example abstract topics include CH4 emissions from landfills and agricultural operations, GHG emissions from fugitive and area sources, and quantification of GHG up-take from soils.
NTSB to hold 3-day public hearing on EMS operations.

November 11, 2008 On Feb 3, 2009, NTSB will hold public hearing on safety of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services operations. There has been a rise in number of EMS accidents and Safety Board believes some of these accidents could have been prevented if recommendations were implemented. Hearing will include pilots, medical personnel, managers, and FAA, and will cover topics such as operational structure and models, flight operations, aircraft safety equipment, training, and oversight.
AMT and AMTDA release data from USMTC report.

November 11, 2008 According to the AMT and AMTDA, a report based on data from companies participating in the USMTC (United States Manufacturing Technology Consumption) program shows manufacturing technology consumption in September 2008 was up 32.0% from August but down 1.4% from September 2007. The year-to-date total is up 11.4% in 2008 compared with 2007. This report provides regional and national U.S. consumption data on domestic and imported machine tools and related equipment.

BIO urges EPA to review science of biofuel emissions.

November 10, 2008 In a letter sent to the EPA on October 23, Jim Greenwood of the BIO stressed that the EPA establish a sound, science-based model for measuring net greenhouse gas emissions related to biofuels production before releasing estimates that may understate the positive role biofuels play in reducing emissions. It notes the difficulty that the EPA faces in combining data from existing LCA tools that measure direct emissions with immature models that attempt to estimate them indirectly.
