B11.TR7-2007 provides guidance on practical application of safety and lean manufacturing principles to machines and manufacturing systems for improving performance, safety, and quality. ASME A112.19.3/CSA B45.4-2008 applies to plumbing fixtures made of stainless steel alloys and specifies requirements for materials, construction, performance, testing, and markings.

November 28, 2008 The recipients of the 2008 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award are Cargill Corn Milling North America in the manufacturing category, Poudre Valley Health System in health care, and Iredell-Statesville Schools in education. They were selected from 85 applicants and evaluated by a board of examiners based on leadership; strategic planning; customer and market focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; workforce focus; process management; and results.

November 28, 2008 Developers and first responders tested 3 dozen robots at Disaster City, Texas, a test facility run by the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX). Sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate, the event included exercises to test battery capacity, mobility, and mapping capabilities. These, and communications and manipulator tests that were also performed, will be evaluated in developing a potential rescue robot test standard.
NIST demonstrates semiconductor measurements down to 10 nm.

November 28, 2008 The NIST has demonstrated the ability to measure low levels of stress/strain in segments of a semiconductor device down to 10 nm across. With electron back scattered diffraction, electron beams sample the top 20 or 30 nm of material, while confocal Raman microscopy can penetrate a micrometer or more and provide depth profiles of stress. Also demonstrated was the possibility of combining the 2 techniques for nanoscale measurements of stress in silicon.
ATA opposes U.K. air passenger duty tax.

November 26, 2008 Air Transport Association of America has expressed stiff opposition to UK government's decision to revise and increase amounts collected under air passenger duty. This extraterritorial decision by U.K. government is counterproductive to airlines' environmental progress and is in violation of various provisions under Convention on International Civil Aviation and relevant bilateral air services agreements that regulate extraterritorial actions and taxes and charges.

November 26, 2008 The ELFA Monthly Leasing and Finance Index showed new business volume for October decreased 9.1% compared to the same period in 2007. Month-to-month new business volume decreased by 7.7% and credit approvals of new transactions declined to 72.5%, the lowest in 2 yr. Half of the 25 banks, finance companies, and manufacturers reported fewer transactions were being submitted for approval. The index reflects the volume of commercial equipment financed in the U.S.

November 26, 2008 The Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI), affiliated trade association of MHIA, has announced ANSI MH16.1-2008, a revision to Specification for the Design Testing and Utilization of Industrial Steel Storage Racks. Approved by ANSI following the Accredited Canvass Procedure, it provides design, safety, performance, and testing requirements for these devices. The revised standard helps compare manufactures' capacities and safety features and ensure International Building Code conformance.
