February 13, 2009 ASTM International has proposed WK22081, Test Methods for Vertical Permeability of Synthetic Turf Sports Field Base Stone and System by Container Flood Test Method. It provides test for vertical permeability of synthetic turf which, according to John J. Amato, does not require special equipment and can be done in field by designer or contractor. Amato also states method accurately mimics rainwater conditions and provides opportunity to see surface drain.

February 13, 2009 Using live fires and real firefighters, NIST researchers are examining effect of firefighter crew sizes and equipment arrival times on fire growth rates and occupant's ability to survive a building fire. One day, experiments may help cut number of people injured or killed in fires, as well as reduce property damage by helping governments make more informed decisions that match firefighting resources with risks to public and firefighters in their communities.

February 13, 2009 NIST has made available SP 800-53, Revision 3, Recommended Security Controls for Federal Information Systems and Organizations, for public comment until March 27, 2009. The publication adds security controls and control enhancements to cover advanced cyber threats as well as introduces information security program plan addressing budgeting, enterprise architectures, and risk management. Updated mapping table is included for organizations wanting to comply with FISMA and ISO 27001.

February 12, 2009 BIO welcomed release of The 90-Billion Gallon Biofuel Deployment Study, a report by Sandia National Laboratories and General Motors Corp. that investigates challenges and feasibility of increasing biofuel production targets to 90 billion gallons. According to study, with accelerated development of biofuel and agricultural technology, large-scale production of advanced biofuels beyond level of Renewable Fuel Standard is achievable and sustainable by 2030.

SRM will also support efforts of ODS and U.S. Department of Agriculture in developing accurate data for Dietary Supplement Ingredient Database. In addition, researchers in academic community may use SRM to benchmark assays for vitamins and minerals.

February 12, 2009 ASTM International Committee A05 has approved ASTM A1059/A1059M, Specification for Zinc Alloy Thermo-Diffusion Coatings (TDC) on Steel Fasteners, Hardware, and Other Products. Technology described in it has enabled replacement of toxic materials used for corrosion protection. According to Moshe Moked of M-Tech, Inc., primary users will be producers/applicators providing corrosion protection to hardware like fasteners, structural components and automotive, agricultural, and military parts.

February 12, 2009 Scheduled twice during 2009, 1-day ASTM Technical and Professional Training course will provide students with basic understanding of mandatory and voluntary flammability performance and quality control test standards for upholstered furniture, mattresses and mattress/box spring sets, and bedding sold in U.S. Both open flame and smoldering tests will be covered. Students will learn how to conduct tests, assess test results to determine compliance, and avoid recalls and penalties.

February 12, 2009 Certain electronics products intended for children will be exempted from CPSC's CPSIA lead limit beginning February 10, 2009 to meet the compliance deadline. The interim rule and proposed rules on January 15, 2009 clarify that lead contained within electronics parts is inaccessible to children, plus it is not technologically feasible for these parts to comply with lead limits of 600 ppm. Proposed rules are expected to become final by end of February 2009.

February 11, 2009 Under ASTM F963, Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety, all toys sold in U.S. must comply with safety measures already required under federal law. It also includes additional guidelines and test methods to prevent injuries from choking, sharp edges, and other potential hazards. Part of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA), standard incorporates toys as well as other children's products, setting strict limits on lead and phthalates.

North American Robot Orders fall in 2008.

February 11, 2009 According to North American-based robotics companies, new orders sold to North American manufacturing companies fell by 21% in units and 16% in dollars in 2008 compared to 2007. Sharp decline accelerated in 4th quarter when orders fell by 26% in units and 33% in dollars compared with last year. Total of 12,557 robots valued at $894.9 million were ordered by North American companies in 2008, down from 15,856 robots valued at $1.07 billion last year.
