March 4, 2009 According to IPC's monthly North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments are down 18.9% and bookings are down 30.7% in January 2009 from January 2008. Book-to-bill ratio for North American rigid PCB industry in January 2009 slipped further to 0.88. Flexible circuit shipments in January 2009 were up 16.6%, while bookings were down 1.8% compared to January 2008, and North American flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio declined to 0.98.

March 3, 2009 ASSE Southern Nevada Chapter welcomed Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman as he spoke at chapter meeting about providing safe vacation destination and safe workplaces. Chapter members, including Nevada Chapter President Dale Walsh, also shared with Mayor their insights on enhancing workplace safety in greater Las Vegas area, such as requiring site-specific safety plans. In Nevada the BLS reports there were 49 fatal workplace injuries in 2006 compared with 68 in 2007.

March 3, 2009 According to Dr. Chris Kuehl, in latest FMA economic update newsletter Fabrinomics, current recession is on par with past economic downturns and economy will begin to improve in 2010. Basing assertions on how NBER defines recessions, such as GDP, income, unemployment, and production, recessions of 1970s and 1980s were more severe on almost every level. Strategy should be to wait out downturn, Kuehl noted, without taking steps that will render companies unable to respond to eventual turnaround.

NACD and Congress to modernize toxic substance legislation.

March 2, 2009 Following 1st hearing of 111th Congress on reform of Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), NACD said TSCA should enable EPA to prioritize on chemicals that pose most risk, based on hazard, use, and exposure. It also urged Congress to build upon work of Chemicals Assessment and Management Program and to provide EPA with funds needed to carry out its mission. NACD believes this will optimize testing process and availablity of information on chemicals.
