March 27, 2009 Since January of last year, building and legislative officials across country have embraced 2008 National Electrical CodeŽ, including child electrical safety requirement. With 24 states operating under Code, growing numbers of children and families can benefit from continuous protection against electrical injuries. NEC Section 406.11 states that all 125 V, 15 and 20 A electrical outlets in new residential construction must be tamper-resistant receptacles.
NIST announces fiscal year budget increase of 8.3%.

March 27, 2009 The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has received $819 million in appropriations for fiscal year 2009, which ends on September 30. Funding for NIST was included in FY 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act (Public Law 111-8), which was passed by Congress and signed by President Obama on March 11. These fiscal-year appropriations come in addition to the $610 million in funds that NIST is receiving due to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

March 27, 2009 Research team from NIST and University of Colorado has shown how to detect and monitor tiny amount of light reflected directly off needle point of atomic force microscope probe, and in so doing has demonstrated 100-fold improvement in stability of instrument's measurements under ambient conditions. Their work potentially affects range of research from nanomanufacturing to biology, where sensitive, atomic-scale measurements must be made at room temperature in liquids.

The Pepperl+Fuchs executive will add corporate responsibilities to his current positions as the foundation's Vice-president of Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) Operations as well as those pertaining to being Chairman of EMEA Steering Committee. Van Pelt said that the additional responsibilities will "intensify even more the relationship between the global and EMEA levels."

March 27, 2009 ASTM Subcommittee F34.01 on Rolling Element has developed a standard for hybrid roller bearings: ASTM F2730/F2730M, Specification for Silicon Nitride Cylindrical Bearing Rollers. As a complement to ASTM F2094/F2094M, Specification for Silicon Nitride Bearing Balls, ASTM F2730/F2730M is intended for bearings end-users, bearings manufacturers, and roller manufacturers. It addresses material used to make the roller, including 3 levels of capability, as well as dimensional specifications.

March 26, 2009 American National Standards Institute (ANSI) named 3 Accredited Elevator and Escalator Certification Organizations (AECOs) that were part of the pilot program launched in February 2008: Liftinstituut Holding BV, TUV SUD America, Inc., and Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. These Certification Bodies are the first to be recognized under said program, which operates according to requirements defined in the international standard ISO/IEC Guide 65 and ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7.

March 25, 2009 The Equipment Leasing and Finance Association's (ELFA) Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25), which reports economic activity for the equipment finance sector, showed overall new business volume for February declined by 37.7% when compared to the same period in 2008. Month-to-month new business volume decreased 26.7% from January to February, an amount that translates into $4.5 billion to $3.3 billion. This follows a 24% decline in January (YOY) volume.
