January 8, 2009 As 111th Congress is sworn in, NACD looks forward to working with Senate and House members on issues important to chemical distribution industry and entire economy, such as chemical security, hazardous materials transportation safety and security, rail competition, and chemicals management policy. In coming days and weeks, NACD will reach out to new Congress to begin discussing issues and to educate Senators and Representatives on key role that chemical distribution plays in chain of commerce.

January 7, 2009 ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2004, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, has been established by DOE as commercial building reference standard for state building energy codes under federal Energy Policy Act. DOE determined that Standard 90.1-2004 saves more energy than Standard 90.1-1999, which was the previously referenced standard. ASHRAE is working on 2010 version of Standard 90.1 with goal of achieving 30% energy savings compared to 90.1-2004.

January 7, 2009 Scheduled for Jan 26, 2009 ASHRAE Press Breakfast will address ASHRAE's Building Energy Labeling program, which aims to provide motivation for reducing energy use in commercial buildings by expressing energy performance of buildings in tangible way. ASHRAE believes public disclosure of energy's design and operation energy efficiency will lead building owners to consider cost-effective energy efficiency improvements at time of design and construction and in any subsequent renovations.

January 7, 2009 U.S. Department of Homeland Security is accepting comments on voluntary private sector preparedness accreditation and certification program. Known as PS-Prep, program is expected to raise level of private sector preparedness through establishing system for DHS to adopt private sector preparedness standards; encouraging creation of those standards; and developing method for private sector entity to obtain certification of conformity with particular DHS-adopted private sector standard.

IPC releases PCB sales statistics for November 2008.

January 6, 2009 Based on findings of monthly survey, IPC reports rigid PCB shipments are down 5.8% and bookings are down 17.3% in November 2008 from November 2007, while flexible circuit shipments are down 22.6% and bookings are down 36.8%. Year to date, rigid shipments are up 2.4% and bookings are down 3.8%, and flexible circuit shipments are up 5.8% and bookings are down 5.5%. Book-to-bill ratio for rigid PCBs slipped to 0.94, flexible circuits increased to 1.04, and combined, the ratio dropped to 0.94.

Standard's intent is to help push companies, government agencies, and other organizations toward sustainable global economy by establishing common guidance on social responsibility concepts, definitions, and methods of evaluation. National body positions and comments on proposed text are expected from each national standards body registered as member of ISO activity.

January 2, 2009 Revising 2004 version, ISO/IEC 18000-1 provides definitions for generic architecture concepts which commonly require item identification within logistics and supply chain. Document guides parameters that are needed in any standardized air interface definition - the communication that occurs between RFID tag or device and RFID reader. In addition, document lists reference addresses in respect of regulations under which ISO/IEC 18000 operates.
Workshop focuses on emergency preparedness for disabled.

January 2, 2009 ANSI-HSSP, in collaboration with NOD EPI and NFPA DARAC, is launching workshop on Emergency Preparedness for Persons with Disabilities and Special Needs. Attendees will discuss standards that currently exist and in what areas new standards need to be developed. Also, actionable recommendations for timely development of standards in identified needs areas will be addressed. Scheduled for Feb 3-4, 2009, workshop will take place at Kellogg Conference Hotel in Washington, DC.

December 31, 2008 ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007 provides requirements for energy-efficient design of buildings except low-rise residential buildings. Among addenda out for public review is addendum aq, which proposes changes to purpose and scope of standard. Proposed modification addresses applications not covered in existing standard scope, such as requirements for laboratories, data center cooling, and kitchen exhausts. It also incorporates utilization of on-site, renewable energy resources.
NAM Coalition to address government security and trade rules.

December 31, 2008 The NAM Customs and Border Coalition will enable businesses and associations to review government rules/procedures on product export/import to address business concerns and ensure that commerce is not unnecessarily impeded. An immediate concern is the 10+2 rule. "We have managed to get some of the worst things out of the rule, but there are still some serious problems. We have to get them worked out before the final rule goes into effect June 1, 2009," said John Engler.
NIST announces revisions to Baldrige Criteria.

Revisions include increased focus on customer engagement, emphasis on core competencies, and information on how organizations can contribute to internal and community environmental/social/economic sustainability. Over 10 million paper copies have been distributed since first Baldrige Award cycle in 1988, with 2 million downloaded annually.

While NIST is accepting papers in any topic area it is particularly interested in white papers that would help further refine several topic areas such as civil infrastructure, energy, water, manufacturing, nanomaterials/nanotechnology, personalized medicine, and sustainable chemistry.
