Hydraulic Institute issues Lifetime Achievement Award.

March 25, 2009 Dave McKinstry, Vice President of Marketing for Colfax/IMO Pump, was awarded the Hydraulic Institute (HI) Lifetime Achievement Award. Presented at the 92nd HI Annual Meeting, the award recognized McKinstry's lifetime of contributions to HI as well as his technical involvement and leadership. In addition to standards writing, his achievements include roles such as Vice Chairman and Chairman for various projects, service on numerous committees, and acting as Standards Voting Representative.

March 25, 2009 Dr. Jack S. Brenizer Jr., J. Lee Everett Professor of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering and chairman of the nuclear engineering program at the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, was given ASTM's Award of Merit. It, in addition to the accompanying title of fellow, was awarded in recognition for contributions to ASTM standards activities, which included technical and administrative leadership as well as contributions to Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing.

March 25, 2009 Suited for individuals given commissioning role who may not have a building HVAC/R background, ASHRAE's Commissioning Process Management Professional certification recognizes those with optimal knowledge of the entire building commissioning process. It launches in June and is designed to help acknowledge those people who are capable of assuring that building systems and equipment are designed, installed, tested, operated, and maintained according to operational needs.
ATA Coalition opposes bill sunsetting aviation alliances.

March 25, 2009 Air Transport Association of America (ATA) urged the administration to oppose HR 831, which would sunset existing international airline alliances. This could destroy important service and public benefits, such as competitive fares and new routes, by withdrawing previously granted rights for carriers to participate in alliances. Also, arbitrarily terminating antitrust immunity will have a harsh impact on airline employees and ripple across the travel and tourism industry.

Bill Waltz, President of Flow Technologies Division of Pentair Water, was named Chairman of the Board, while Dennis Ziegler, President and CEO of GIW Industries, was elected HI President. Steve Oswald, President of Industrial Division of Hamilton Sundstrand Corp., was elected as VP of HI Member Services, and Ken Napolitano, President of ITT Industrial Process was elected as HI's VP of Knowledge and Education.

March 24, 2009 Randy Ferman, Manager of Research and Development for Flowserve's Pump Division, was chosen for significant and sustained contributions to Hydraulic Institute. Mr. Ferman served as Chairman of HI/Pump Systems Matter "Optimizing Pumping Systems" Guidebook Committee, leading to publication in 2008. He also chaired Vertical Design and Application Committee, which led to publication of significantly updated ANSI/HI standard in 2008.

AWWA recognizes 16th annual World Water Day.

March 23, 2009 AWWA, along with United Nations and water advocates worldwide, will recognize World Water Day on March 22, 2009, which is aimed at getting countries to collaborate to assure sustainable freshwater supplies for all. According to AWWA Executive Director Gary Zimmerman, 2008 State of the Industry report found water resources was top concern among North American water professionals over both near- and long-terms. There are 85 events planned worldwide, with 37 in U.S. and Canada.
World Congress to explore bringing biofuels to market.

March 23, 2009 BIO's 2009 World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing will be held July 19-22, 2009, in Montreal, Canada. Sessions will include Synthetic Biology for Next Generation Biofuels, Progress Toward Commercialization of Lignocellulosic Ethanol Processes, and Algae for Fuels and Chemicals, with various speakers scheduled for each. Progress will also be reported on bringing cellulosic and other biofuels such as algae, biobutanol, and biohydrogen to market.

March 23, 2009 Consultant Anthony E. Fiorato of Glenview, IL, has received ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow. Fiorato was recognized for meritorious and dedicated leadership to ASTM Intl. Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates and to Society for service on board of directors and as chairman of the board. An active member for almost 30 years, Fiorato is chair of Committee C09 and also leads Executive Committee of Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory.
TIA offers tips to combat pothole damage.

March 23, 2009 According to TIA, if consumer hits pothole and then notices car pulls to one side or steering wheel is no longer straight, car may have been knocked out of alignment and should be taken to automotive service provider. If there is bulge or visible cord material on either sidewall of tire, it must be replaced immediately. If tire goes flat after hitting a pothole, it will need to be replaced, but rim may still be in good condition. Also, consumers should drive slowly over roads with many potholes.
Mexico to impose tariffs on imports from U.S.

March 23, 2009 Mexican government announced it will impose tariffs on exports in retaliation for U.S. refusal to honor cross-border trucking provisions in NAFTA. Concerned that decision could threaten hundreds of thousands of U.S. jobs, Frank Vargo of NAM said it comes at time when U.S. industry can least afford lost sales and competitiveness in important global markets. NAM will work with Congress and Administration to resolve dispute so sales of U.S. goods are not put at risk.

March 23, 2009 Timothy F. Geithner, U.S. Treasury Secretary, announced U.S Treasury Department's Auto Supplier Support Program, which will provide up to $5 billion in financing to auto suppliers. In response, John Engler said NAM believes it is common sense proposal that assures suppliers will be paid for work done and have confidence to invest in necessary equipment. Engler also said action will help preserve many highly-skilled jobs and lay groundwork for economic recovery.

March 23, 2009 Federal Reserve Board announced that Term Asset Backed Securities Loan Facility (TALF) will be expanded to include asset backed securities (ABS) backed by loans and leases relating to business equipment. According to ELFA President Kenneth E. Bentsen, Jr., this will provide needed liquidity to secondary market for equipment finance assets while unlocking equipment finance ABS market. Additional details for April funding of TALF will be announced on March 24.
BIO Convention to spotlight Southeast U.S. biotech industry.

March 23, 2009 At 2009 BIO International Convention in Atlanta, GA, May 18-21, Southeast BIOtech Connect interactive database will outline over 1,200 biotech companies and centers throughout Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Database is intended to enable people to schedule facility visits before and after visiting exhibition, which is expected to draw 20,000 worldwide industry leaders. Event is expected to host more than 2,200 exhibitors.
ATA reports decline in passenger and cargo demand.

March 23, 2009 According to ATA, passenger revenue fell 19% in February 2009 vs. same month in 2008, which is 4th consecutive month revenue has fallen from prior year. Cargo traffic for airlines declined 21% year-over-year in January 2009 and transpacific cargo traffic fell 32%. Declines affected mainland U.S. as well as transatlantic, transpacific, and Latin markets. Annually, commercial aviation helps drive $1.1 trillion in U.S. economic activity and over 10 million jobs.
