ASTM Proposes Standard for measuring acid mist, air quality.

April 7, 2009 ASTM International Committee D22 on Air Quality is constructing a standard for measuring acid mists that come from combustion sources titled 'WK22846, Test Method for Determination of Sulfur Oxides Including Sulfur Dioxide, Sulfur Trioxide, and Sulfuric Acid Vapor and Mist, from Stationary Sources Using the Controlled Condensation Sampling System.' This will help address US EPA concerns about fine particles (2.5 Ám dia and smaller) deemed unhealthy to breathe.

April 7, 2009 AIA President and CEO Marion Blakey said to House appropriations subcommittee that with 60 countries having active space programs, stable and sufficient investment for NASA is required to protect U.S. leadership in space against growing international competition. Funding is needed for resources such as new space vehicles, climate monitoring satellites, and educational initiatives. Blakey also invited subcommittee to attend TARC's final flyoff at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia.

April 7, 2009 Victor Mendez, former Director of Arizona Department of Transportation and 2007 President of AASHTO, has been named by President Obama as next Federal Highway Administrator, subject to Senate confirmation. During his ADOT tenure, Mendez implemented accelerated schedule for Valley regional freeway system. As deputy director, he served as part of ADOT team, which completed $80 million widening of I-17 and launched the widening of Superstition Freeway.

April 6, 2009 EASTEC annual attendee survey of more than 700 manufacturers reveals that instead of reflecting on troubles of current economy, respondents suggested that they were ready to work harder, smarter, and invest in their future. Ninety percent were attending EASTEC to see new products and many will be there buying, with 21% of manufacturers reporting increased equipment budgets. Networking and learning new applications were also reported as priorities, as was work force development.

Forecast Predicts long-term aviation activity growth.

April 6, 2009 With regards to long-term concerns, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) annual aviation forecast predicts a return to growth for air travel. This 16-year forecast, covering 2009-2025, predicts domestic passenger enplanements to decrease by 7.8% in 2009 and then grow 2.7% per year thereafter. US aircraft operations are predicted to experience a 5.7% decrease in 2009 from 2008 levels, but operations are expected to grow at an annual rate of 1.5% from 2010 to 2025.
