ASHRAE funds thermal research for commercial kitchens.

April 21, 2009 ASHRAE is seeking to provide a cool and comfortable work environment for the 12.2 million people in the United States employed in the restaurant industry. Greg Duchane of ASHRAE's technical committee 5.10 on kitchen ventilation is overseeing project to understand thermal comfort in kitchens, which includes walk-in surveys and onsite data collections as well as 16 other projects. Proposals are due by May 18, 2009, with projects scheduled to begin by September 1.
ATA Report shows decline in passenger demand, cargo traffic.

April 21, 2009 In a report released by the Air Transport Association of America (ATA), content based on cumulative data provided by various airlines indicated that passenger revenue fell 23% in March 2009 versus the same month in 2008. This is the fifth consecutive month of year-to-year declining passenger revenue. Cargo traffic also declined 21% year over year in February 2009, matching the decline measured in January and marking the seventh consecutive month of year-to-year declining traffic.

NAM Urges Regulators to defer to congress on climate issue.

April 21, 2009 The National Association of Manufacturers urged the Environmental Protection Agency to avoid an "endangerment finding" that would trigger regulation of greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions under the Clean Air Act. Specifically, NAM warned that using outdated programs under the CAA as a tool for regulating GHG emissions will further burden the ailing economy while doing little or nothing to improve the environment.
World Congress addresses synthetic biology's emergence, potential.

April 21, 2009 At the 2009 World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing, thought leaders from the US and Europe will explore the implications of synthetic biology's rapid emergence. Brent Erickson of BIO said that "New applications of synthetic biology...have come forward at a rapid pace, highlighting the field's technology's potential." He also said that "Leaders in the field are relying on industrial biotechnology's long history of safety and best practices" for continued growth.
