ASHRAE Project raises awareness on plug loads.

March 12, 2009 To help students gain better understanding of how being plugged in impacts building energy use, ASHRAE is funding teaching project known as Plugged In! for students at University of Oregon. As part of project, students will "shop" for electrical appliances, determine plug loads of each appliance, and calculate short-term and long-term energy implications. They will also develop real-time monitoring and feedback loop of dormitory as part of their goal of modifying occupant behavior.
NIST Experts address security for Internet domain names.

March 12, 2009 Scientists at NIST have developed Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards to add digital signatures and associated key management procedures to DNS protocols. These will allow users to validate authenticity and integrity of data and provide basis for new DNS and protocol infrastructure and reliant systems. In addition, NIST has developed Secure Naming Infrastructure Pilot distributed testbed and has updated recommendations for Secure Domain Name System Deployment Guide.
EMS Program Managers earn IPC CEPM certification.

Singapore topped list, followed by South Korea and Switzerland. BCG/NAM/MI International Innovation Index is part of broad research study that looked at both business outcomes of innovation and government's ability to encourage and support innovation through public policy.

March 11, 2009 Revised ASTM F963-2008 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety provides guidelines and test methods to protect children from range of potential hazards, including lead exposure, choking, and sharp edges. Revisions address incidents of swallowing small magnets in toys, acoustics, potential strangulation hazards associated with yo-yo elastic tether toys, impact hazards for children up to 48 months, and flammability testing to federal standards.

Blakey also promoted funding for NASA space programs and improving current export control system, as well as accelerating implementation of NextGen air transportation modernization effort, which she says will create jobs in ongoing development and implementation phases.

March 11, 2009 ASTM F2043, Classification for Bicycle Usage, has been revised for use as educational tool for bicycle industry and consumers purchasing bikes. It outlines 5 different intended bicycle uses in 0-4 naming scheme. Also, Subcommittee F08.10 is working on ASTM WK22294, Specification for Child Riding Trailer Cycles, the first section which covers general items such as protrusions, sharp edges, and reflectors. Its 2 other parts cover tests that simulate riding situations.

NTSB continues to advocate setting work hour limits based on fatigue research, circadian rhythms, and sleep rest requirements that will reduce unnecessary risk to the traveling public. The commitment is backed by several previous recommendations made to enhance operator and public safety.

March 10, 2009 Companies are urged to lobby the European Union (EU) Council and Parliament with regards to the new revision for the RoHS Directive that calls for the restriction of Tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA), the flame retardant used in more than 80 percent of printed circuits. The Oko Institut, private consultants hired by the EU Commission, identified TBBPA for possible restriction under RoHS even though it has been determined to be safe for the environment and human health.
