In May 2008, AASHTO released "Driving Down Lane-Departure Crashes," a study outlining number of systematic approaches that many state departments of transportation are implementing to save lives. An informational video featuring AASHTO President Pete Rahn is being released to promote report's life saving strategies. As Director of Missouri Department of Transportation, Rahn has cut lane departure related fatalities by 25% over past 3 years.

In response to European Parliament approval of legislation to add aviation into European Emissions Trading Scheme, ATA pointed out that proposal violates Chicago Convention. Legislation requires U.S. and other non-EU airlines to pay EU entities for airlines' emissions for entire flight to and from Europe, without consent of airlines' home countries. ATA believes that legislation will be counterproductive since airlines are already motivated to operate as fuel efficiently as possible.

Based on FY 2008 funds, NIST announced that it expects to award approximately $9 million in first-year funding for research and development projects focused on sensors and related technologies that provide quantitative assessments of structural integrity of bridges, roads, water mains, and wastewater collection systems. Competition for cost-shared R&D support is first to be announced by NIST's Technology Innovation Program in effort to address critical societal challenges.

Utilizing plant viruses, materials researchers at NIST have identified small biomolecule that binds to calcium compound that is basic building block of teeth and bone. With refinements, molecule can be highly discriminating probe for wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic applications, including remineralization of teeth to repair decay damage, integration of prosthetic joints and tissue-engineered bone materials, and cell-based therapies to regrow bone tissue.

Developed by NIST and Universtiy of Maryland, Lyman alpha neutron detector will receive one of this year's R&D 100 Awards, which recognizes 100 most technologically significant products introduced into market during previous year, as selected by independent judging panel and editors of R&D Magazine. Ultrasensitive, high-bandwidth unit detects neutrons by measuring Lyman alpha radiation in far UV region of spectrum when neutrons are absorbed by helium isotope.
