October 4, 2013 As announced by RIA, Midwest Engineering Systems received Certified Robot Integrator designation. Certification process requires on-site audit and testing of key personnel as well as other criteria. Jeff Burnstein, RIA president, welcomed Midwest Engineering Systems as RIA's sixteenth Certified Robot Integrator and said that this program "strengthens the overall integrator channel and allows integrators to benchmark their own processes against best industry practices."
Industrial Communication Foundations discuss potential merger.

October 3, 2013 Fieldbus Foundation and HART Communication Foundation have entered into discussions on their potential merger into one industry foundation dedicated to needs of intelligent device communications within process automation. In their combined statement, Fieldbus Foundation chairman Dr. Gunther Kegel and HART Communication Foundation chairman Mark Schumacher said "combining the resources and capabilities of each foundation...will provide significant benefits to both end users and suppliers."
Los Angeles Mayor, NASA Engineer will headline WESTEC 2013.

October 3, 2013 Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and NASA Jet Propulsion Lab Engineer Adam Steltzner will respectively open and keynote WESTEC 2013. According to WESTEC event manager Christine Longroy, "The Mayor can direct policy and bring stakeholders together to drive manufacturing growth in the region," and "highlighting NASA’s technological feat with the Mars rover connects manufacturing to scientific advancements." West Coast manufacturing event takes place in Los Angeles, CA from October 15–17.

October 3, 2013 IPC and educational partner CALCE® (Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering) will host 7th International Symposium on Tin Whiskers. All are funded by NSF and focused on drug discovery, diagnostics, and other platform technologies.

First and second place winners were from Pratt Institute, and third place winners were from Fashion Institute of Technology.

October 1, 2013 U.S. EPA released Design for the Environment Alternatives Assessment draft report on alternatives to hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), a flame retardant chemical that has persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic characteristics. Findings in report can help manufacturers identify safer alternatives to use of HBCD in polystyrene building insulation. In addition to identifying 2 viable chemical alternatives, report provides list of substances that are not currently expected to be viable.

October 1, 2013 During SepticSmart Week (September 23–27), U.S. EPA encourages homeowners to take action to ensure their septic systems are functioning properly. EPA's Nancy Stoner said homeowners can help protect their community's health and local waterways "By taking a few small, simple steps to care for their home’s septic system." EPA's SepticSmart program encourages proper septic system care and maintenance all year long, helping educate about need for periodic maintenance and proper daily system use.
Cycling Emissions Calculated for increased alt energy in West.

October 1, 2013 Phase 2 of Western Wind and Solar Integration Study (WWSIS-2) quantifies potential impacts of increasing wind and solar power generation on operators of fossil-fueled power plants in West. Study finds carbon emissions induced by more frequent cycling are negligible (<0.2%) compared with carbon reductions achieved via wind and solar power generation. SO2 emissions reductions from wind and solar are 5% less than expected, and emissions of nitrogen oxides are reduced 2% more than expected.
AASHTO awards top prizes in Faces of Transportation contest.

October 1, 2013 During Faces of Transportation competition, 28 transportation department employees from 21 states and 6 private citizens submitted 121 photographs. Grand Prize was awarded to California DOT Engineer Martin Chandrawinata for photograph of iron worker using a cutting torch while suspended from San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. People's Choice Award was presented to photographer Bill Hall who captured California DOT Engineer Matt Bruce inspecting cable band installation near top of same bridge.

October 1, 2013 IPC invites researchers, technical experts, and industry leaders to submit poster presentation abstracts for IPC APEX EXPO®, which will take place March 25–27, 2014 in Las Vegas, NV. Technical poster presentations are being sought on relevant electronics topics, including design, materials, assembly, processes, and equipment. Abstracts of up to 300 words summarizing technical and previously unpublished work should be submitted by December 22, 2013.
EPA Announces WaterSense Labeled Product for commercial kitchens.

September 30, 2013 U.S. EPA finalized first WaterSense specification for a commercial kitchen product: pre-rinse spray valves. These kind of valves, which remove excess food waste from dishes prior to dishwashing, are now eligible to earn WaterSense label and help food service establishments conserve water and energy. WaterSense labeled pre-rinse spray valves will be promoted by ENERGY STAR® program as part of  energy saving products and practices for restaurant industry.
EPA Honors 24 Organizations for green power leadership.

September 30, 2013 U.S. EPA presented its 13th annual Green Power Leadership Awards to 21 Green Power Partners and 3 suppliers for achievements in advancing USA's renewable electricity market. In comment, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy complemented winners for “driving new renewable energy generation and providing clear examples of organizations thriving on innovation and sustainability.” McCarthy also lauded winners for “moving us closer to the vision President Obama outlined in his Climate Action Plan.”
NEMA welcomes Senate approval of Helium Bill.

September 27, 2013 NEMA welcomed Senate passage of compromise legislation to reauthorize, extend, and improve operations of Federal Helium Reserve in Texas and called on House to vote as soon as possible to approve bill. If Congress fails to act on helium legislation before October 7, Federal Helium Reserve will cease operations. U.S. users of helium acquire much of their supply via industrial gas refining companies associated with the reserve, which currently holds approximately 30% of global supply.
