March 30, 2009 Producers of fluorocarbons are invited to join in ongoing standards development activities of ASTM International Committee D26 on Halogenated Organic Solvents and Fire Extinguishing Agents. The committee recently approved standard ASTM D7509, Specification for Fluorocarbon Feedstock Grade Chloroform. Producers of feedstock for fluorocarbon industry, as well as fluorocarbon producers themselves, are the intended/foreseen users of ASTM D7509.

March 30, 2009 NIST and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have worked on Project 25 Conformity Assessment Program (P25 CAP), which aims to ensure interoperability between equipment of first responders, public safety officers, and military personnel. To that end, the 2009 edition of NIST Handbook 153 details procedures by which independent testing laboratories can be evaluated for their ability to determine how well communications devices meet said requirement.

Thirteen percent of participants predict an improvement in overall economic activity, 39% expect that activity will remain unchanged, and 48% reported that activity will decline. Current average daily shipping levels improved slightly in March.

March 27, 2009 Broadband Forum announced latest IPTV and broadband statistics, with Western Europe, Africa, and Middle East regions showing strong IPTV growth of 45% throughout 2008. Report, prepared for Forum by industry analysts Point Topic, showed France as largest IPTV market in Western Europe region, with over half of 10.2 million subscribers. Global IPTV subscriber totals have now reached 21.7 million, which is an increase of 63% on end of 2007 figures.

With 24 states operating under Code, growing numbers of children and families can benefit from continuous protection against electrical injuries. NEC Section 406.11 states that all 125 V, 15 and 20 A electrical outlets in new residential construction must be tamper-resistant receptacles.

March 27, 2009 The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has received $819 million in appropriations for fiscal year 2009, which ends on September 30. Funding for NIST was included in FY 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act (Public Law 111-8), which was passed by Congress and signed by President Obama on March 11. These fiscal-year appropriations come in addition to the $610 million in funds that NIST is receiving due to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

March 27, 2009 Research team from NIST and University of Colorado has shown how to detect and monitor tiny amount of light reflected directly off needle point of atomic force microscope probe, and in so doing has demonstrated 100-fold improvement in stability of instrument's measurements under ambient conditions. Their work potentially affects range of research from nanomanufacturing to biology, where sensitive, atomic-scale measurements must be made at room temperature in liquids.
