June 11, 2009 Posted on organization's website, video shows 8th graders solving engineering problems at December 2008 NFPA Fluid Power Challenge, which engaged students and introduced them to fluid power technology and career opportunities. Of students that participated in 2008 event, 73% expressed interest in related careers on post-test/evaluation. Competition will take place in 2009 at Marquette University, University of Minnesota, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and Harper College.

June 11, 2009 NEMA, AASHTO, and ITE have published National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP) 1104 v01 Center-to-Center Naming Convention Specification. Under development since 1996, set of communication protocols for traffic management devices defines naming service for common object request broker architecture (CORBA) for use in center-to-center communications in transportation industry. It can be referenced by non-CORBA standards to define how certain items should be named.

WK23931, Specification for Fabricated PVC Pressure Fittings, will enable all parties in a supply chain to use the same terminology when it comes to calling out fittings required for the job at hand. Potential users of WK23931 may include consulting and municipal engineers, contractors, distributors, and plumbers.
ASTM approves traffic intersection movement data standard.

June 9, 2009 ASTM International Committee E17 on Vehicle-Pavement Systems has approved E2667, Practice for Acquiring Intersection Turning Movement Traffic Data, which standardizes how to compile and interpret data regarding traffic turning through intersections. Developed by Subcommittee E17.52 on Traffic Monitoring, this standard could impact future environmental and safety decisions regarding intersection geometry and traffic control.
NTSB urges motorcoach industry to use occupant restraints.

June 9, 2009 In address to New Jersey Motorcoach Association, NTSB Acting Chairman, Mark V. Rosenker, called on motorcoach industry to voluntarily move toward fleets equipped with lap/shoulder belts, since system is not required by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Lap/shoulder belts don't just enhance safety, but also make good business sense, as passengers become more savvy about safety advantages of occupant restraint systems.
ASTM Standard to measure effectiveness of hand sanitizers.

June 9, 2009 With outbreaks of H1N1 influenza this year, ASTM International Committee E35 on Pesticides and Alternative Control Agents is developing proposed standard that will measure antibacterial activity of hand sanitizers on people's hands. According to David Macinga, microbiology principal scientist, GOJO Industries Inc., ASTM WK23789 accurately reflects typical use pattern for hand sanitizers and produces results that are reflective of real-world efficacy of these products.
Committee developing inflatable restraint cushion standard.

June 9, 2009 ASTM International Committee D13 on Textiles is developing a proposed new standard, WK23227, Test Method for Determining Pressure Decay of Inflatable Restraint Cushions, for the testing of side curtain airbags. It is being developed by Subcommittee D13.20 to be an inexpensive screening test to judge the ability of a rollover side curtain airbag to maintain needed pressure over time. Suppliers of the airbags would be the primary users of said standard.

June 9, 2009 Designed to aid mechanical excavation projects, ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock is developing a new standard for measuring rock abrasivity. ASTM WK22313, Test Method for Laboratory Determination of Abrasivity of Rock Using the CERCHAR Method, will be useful in allowing for a better assessment of a rock formation's suitability for mechanical excavation as well as better performance prediction of selected mechanical excavation machines.

Wet and dry density of soils are important values for geotechnical engineers in determining over-burden stresses, void ratios, maximum compaction, and percent compaction of soils. Density value can also aid in evaluation of soil strength and sensitivity.

Committee E28 on Mechanical Testing, E2248, Test Method for Impact Testing of Miniaturized Charpy V-Notch Specimens, and E2298, Test Method for Instrumented Impact Testing of Metallic Materials will be used by engineers and researchers with specialized Charpy testing needs. E2298 focuses on instrumenting machine striker to measure and record force on notched sample during impact, while E2248 will be helpful for users who need to reduce size of Charpy specimens.
