ASTM Standard addresses testing of paintbrush filaments.

April 16, 2009 Standard ASTM D7233, Test Method for Testing Fracture of Level Paintbrush Filaments, was developed by Subcommittee D01.61 on Paint Application Tools. According to John Feathers of DuPont Filaments, D7233 and equipment it details will allow suppliers of hollow filaments for paintbrushes to better assess tendency of filaments to fracture. Method can be used between suppliers and manufacturers to establish acceptable quality specification for filaments.
ASTM introduces new standard for determining wettability.

April 15, 2009 ASTM International standard D7490, Test Method for Measurement of the Surface Tension of Solid Coatings, Substrates, and Pigments Using Contact Angle Measurements, was developed by Subcommittee D01.23. It will be used to determine wettability of given primer or substrate or to explain reason for wetting problems/defects over certain primer or substrate, says Clifford Schoff, Ph.D. Schoff also says it can help characterize pigments pressed into disks and to determine how easy pigment is to wet.

"Guidelines for Successfully Sharing Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) Information" uncovers ways in which COGS information sharing can benefit distributors and manufacturers.

ANSI lauds standards at NASDAQ market open ceremony.

April 15, 2009 ANSI led the NASDAQ market open ceremony on April 7, 2009 in New York City. Therein, ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia gave a speech that highlighted contributions that standards and conformity assessment make to the global economy. A few he cited included check size/configuration, messaging protocols, and credit card numbering systems. Closer to home, Mr. Bhatia also mentioned "the hardware and software platforms used to power the NASDAQ stock market itself."

Speaking on behalf of the 5 Specialist Regional Bodies of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), Kushnier discussed APEC's technical infrastructure development in the area of standards and conformance.

April 15, 2009 Proposed by ANSI in conjunction with NASPO, TC 247, Fraud countermeasures and controls, has been approved for creation by ISO. Committee will focus on development of standards in areas of brand and intellectual property protection, identity management, and financial fraud. It is expected to meet later this year and its work will complement initiatives of ISO Project Committee (PC) 246, with U.S. positions carried forward to both TC 247 and PC 246 by ANSI-accredited U.S. TAG.

Recommendations related to communications, participation, expert involvement/coordination, and adaptability were made.

April 14, 2009 According to AMT (Association For Manufacturing Technology) and AMTDA (American Machine Tool Distributors' Association), the total for February US manufacturing technology consumption was $129.65 million. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTC program, was up 28.5% from January but down 62.4% from the total reported for February 2008. Compared with 2008, 2009 is down 66.2% with a year-to-date total of $230.53 million.
John Porcari named as new U.S. DOT Deputy Secretary.

April 14, 2009 John Porcari, Secretary of Maryland DOT, has been chosen by President Barack Obama to become next Deputy Secretary of U.S. DOT. According to AASHTO Executive Director, John Horsley, Porcari has led the way in community sensitive design and smart growth strategies at Maryland DOT and was instrumental in development of $2.4 billion Woodrow Wilson Bridge, which was delivered on time and on budget. Porcari is in 2nd tour of duty as Secretary, having previously served from 1999-2002.

April 14, 2009 Developed by Subcommittee D18.09 on Cyclic and Dynamic Properties of Soils, proposed standard WK23118 covers type of testing that can aid in predicting soil and foundation response to seismic and manmade disturbances. By performing bender element tests and comparing results to field test results, degree of structure compromise can be determined. Also, determining stiffness by bender elements allows for advanced computer modeling of systems such as foundations and retaining walls.
Manufactured Goods Trade Balance improves.

April 13, 2009 According to trade data released by U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. deficit in manufactured goods trade fell dramatically in February, to $23 billion, 44% smaller than $42 billion deficit last February. The $19 billion improvement in manufactured goods trade deficit from last February was as large as improvement in petroleum trade balance, and accounted for about half of overall gain in U.S. balance of trade in goods and services.
ATA urges implementation of air traffic management system.

April 13, 2009 While government data show that flight delays have fallen recently, ATA said much more must be done to improve service by accelerating implementation of NextGen modernized air traffic management system. Air Travel Consumer Report showed that nation's largest airlines had higher rate of on-time flights in February 2009 than in February 2008, and that tarmac delays of 3 hours or more were down. Rate for mishandled baggage also improved while customer complaints were down.

Final competition gives middle and high school students chance to earn part of total prize package of $60,000 in scholarships and other prizes. Teams design, build, and launch model rockets with raw-egg payload that must return to ground unbroken. This year's contest goals are altitude of 750 ft and flight time of 45 sec.
