Midwest DOTs receive awards for transportation projects.

July 20, 2009 Jointly sponsored by AASHTO, AAA, and U.S. Chamber of Commerce, competition honors America's best in transportation. Michigan DOT won On Time category for I-94 Kalamazoo County Reconstruction Project, while Minnesota DOT won On Time category for I-35W Minneapolis Bridge Replacement Project. Missouri DOT received award in On Budget category for I-44 Conway Welcome Center Project, and Wisconsin DOT's Lake Delton Highway Repair Project was winner in On Time category.
AMT urges Congress to assist small manufacturers.

July 20, 2009 Testifying before House Small Business Committee, AMT President Douglas K. Woods told members effects of tax breaks and other provisions within American Recovery and Reinvestment Act have been minimal on manufacturing industry. According to Woods, AMT supported several business tax provisions to encourage companies to invest in equipment, but they have yet to do so. He also noted depreciation incentives need to be extended through 2010 and Net Operating Loss carryback extended from 2 to 5 yr.
Larry Press receives ASTM's Award of Merit.

July 20, 2009 Larry Press, director of flooring at Helmitin Inc., has received ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow. Press was cited for exceptional and sustained leadership as an executive, main, and subcommittee officer in ASTM Committee F06 on Resilient Floor Coverings and significant contributions he has made toward development and maintenance of flooring standards. A member of ASTM since 1988, Press is a past chair and current second vice chair of Committee F06.
Dale Wahlquist receives Anderson Award.

July 20, 2009 ASTM International Committee C26 on Nuclear Fuel Cycle has recognized Dale Wahlquist, department manager, applied engineering design and drafting, at Idaho National Laboratory, with Harlan J. Anderson Award for his outstanding contributions to committee. Wahlquist, who joined ASTM International in 1999, is first vice chair of Committee C26 and leads Subcommittee C26.14 on Remote Systems. He also works on joint group with Committee E10 on Nuclear Technology and Applications.
AWWA supports federal water infrastructure bank.

July 20, 2009 AWWA urged members of Congress to create federal water infrastructure bank to help America invest in aging water system. Federal water infrastructure bank would be authorized to borrow money through federal treasury system at low rates, make low-interest loans for larger water projects, and help those states that want to leverage SRF capitalization grants. It would require no new taxes, striking right balance between federal assistance and local responsibility.

Shorter conference paper format with 8-page limit is being introduced in addition to traditional 30-page technical papers. Some tracks include What is Sustainable Anyway?, Energy Facts vs. Simulations, Ventilation Systems, Refrigeration for the Future, and Central Plant Systems.
NAM applauds new trade enforcement initiatives.

July 20, 2009 In response to U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk's speech, Frank Vargo of NAM said organization applauds new trade enforcement initiatives. NAM will work with Ambassador Kirk to implement new initiatives by increasing monitoring of trade practices in other countries and will set up procedure for member companies to identify foreign trade practices that break rules. Also, pending trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea need to be sent to Congress and passed into law.

July 20, 2009 Proposed standards by Committee F32 on Search and Rescue, under jurisdiction of Subcommittee F32.02 on Management and Operations, include WK23984, Guide for Level 1 (Basic) Mounted Search and Rescue (MSAR) Responder. Principal users will be trained search and rescue personnel who deploy on horseback and those providing nontechnical rescue services on such missions. Also proposed is WK24699, Guide for Training for Land SAR as a Level 1 Out of Area Disaster Responder.

July 20, 2009 ASTM WK24231, Practice/Guide for Internal Pipe Epoxy Barrier Coating Material Used in Pressurized Piping Systems, is being developed by Subcommittee F17.67 on Trenchless Plastic Pipeline Technology. Personnel involved in rehabilitation of pressurized piping systems are invited to participate in development, particularly those involved in regulatory activities. Potential users include designers, specifiers, regulatory agencies, owners, contractors, and inspection organizations.

July 17, 2009 ASTM International Committee F08 on Sports Equipment and Facilities has approved ASTM standard F2713, Specification for Eye Protectors for Field Hockey, developed by Subcommittee F08.57 on Eye Safety for Sports. Subcommittee welcomes participation in its standards developing activities, especially by representatives from medical- or vision-related businesses as well as sports organizations. It also plans on writing separate standards for sports included in ASTM F803.

July 17, 2009 ASTM International Committee F20 on Hazardous Substances and Oil Spill Response is developing proposed standard WK24607, Specification for the Design and Use of Vessel-Mounted Camera Systems for Oil Spill Response. Primary users will be managers of spill cooperatives who will use it to purchase/optimize recovery vessel camera systems. Such cameras direct crews toward oil and thicker oil on sea surface that cannot be seen from decks near sea level.

July 17, 2009 Responding to concerns about quality and accuracy of methods used by testing laboratories to measure levels of vitamin D in the body, scientists at NIST, in collaboration with NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements, have developed reference sample for vitamin D in blood serum to help laboratories validate accuracy of test methods. NIST Standard Reference Material 972, "Vitamin D in Human Serum," represents first step toward standardization of vitamin D testing.
NCNR Reactor relicensed by U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

July 17, 2009 U.S. NRC completed extensive review of NCNR's research reactor, which has been relicensed to continue operation until July 2029. Relicensing process took better part of 9 years, which required NCNR staff, particularly Reactor Operations and Engineering Group, to run reactor through safety analyses that were then independently verified by technical experts. NRC concluded that reactor can be operated for period of extended operation without undue risk to health and safety of public.
