June 25, 2009 East and West Michigan Districts of PMA have signed alliance agreement with MIOSHA to promote safety/health of workers in metalforming industry. Part of Michigan Department of Energy, Labor, and Economic Growth, MIOSHA works with public and private sector employers to find ways to enhance workplace safety/health. Alliance goals include developing training resources, reducing/preventing exposure to hazards and addressing press safety issues, and promoting MIOSHA programs to district members.

Family of communication protocols for traffic management devices has been in development since 1996.

Expectations include a slight uptick in general economic activity alongside a slight improvement in incoming orders. Conversely, current average daily shipping levels were said to dip somewhat in June, and metalforming companies with portions of their workforce on short time or layoff increased to 81% in June.

Standard addresses determination of sulfur forms in coal.

June 24, 2009 Subcommittee D05.21 on Methods of Analysis invites all interested parties to participate in development of proposed new standard, WK22936, Test Method for Determination of Sulfur Forms in Coal by ICP-AES. Standard is to be based on D2492, Test Method for Forms of Sulfur in Coal, but will be focused on reducing required sample sizes. Gravimetric and atomic absorption detection methods will be replaced in proposed standard with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy.
NAM Supports administration's WTO case against China.

June 24, 2009 Frank Vargo, NAM VP for International Economic Affairs, issued a statement supporting the announcement by US Trade Representative, Ron Kirk, that the US and EU are initiating dispute settlement procedures in the WTO regarding China's export restraints on raw materials important to US manufacturers. Citing "a clear violation of commitments China made when joining the WTO," Vargo said the "export restriction of 9 key raw materials has distorted trade and caused economic injury to NAM members."
NIST seeks proposals for fellowship grants.

June 24, 2009 With $20 million from American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009, NIST is establishing financial assistance program to help selected institutions develop and implement measurement science and engineering fellowship program. NIST expects to award up to $20 million to support up to 5 grants to educational institutions, organizations, or local governments and expects program to support about 100 fellowship positions, used for training students and collaborative research.

June 24, 2009 Based on survey of 215 CBC members representing small to large businesses, report by Customs and Border Coalition highlights huge cost of U.S. Customs and Border Protection's 10+2 Rule, which requires manufacturers and other importers to provide new data to government. Report asserts that compliance with rule is difficult and disruptive to respondents' supply chains, imposes permanent operation costs of $3.5 billion each year, and adds 3 days of additional delay to global supply chain.

June 24, 2009 According to ATA, passenger revenue fell 26% in May 2009 versus same month in 2008. This marks seven consecutive months in which passenger revenue fell from prior year. While average price to fly one mile fell 17.6%, number of passengers traveling on US airlines in May fell 9.5%. These results also reflect impacts from H1N1 (swine) influenza outbreaks. Marking nine consecutive months of decline, US airlines also saw cargo traffic fall 22% year over year in April 2009.

June 23, 2009 With release of prototype label at 2009 Annual Conference, ASHRAE is 1 step closer to introducing Building Energy Quotient program, or Building EQ, to include asset and operational ratings for all building types except residential. Program focuses solely on energy use, with new buildings eligible for asset rating and existing buildings eligible for asset and operational rating. ASHRAE is working with real estate developers to implement prototype in fall, with widespread launch in 2010.
IFMA Research shows trends impacting workplace operations.

June 23, 2009 Operations and Maintenance Benchmarks, Research Report #32 shows that average space/person has risen nearly 40 sq ft since 2007, to 435 sq ft, likely due to layoffs. Companies are also adjusting thermostats higher or lower by average of 1F compared to 2006 data. Report shows 61% of companies say buildings contain green elements but are not certified, and are using average of 82 kBtus of electricity, while certified green ones are using 69 kBtus. Study provides data from 1,422 facilities.
US Manufacturers said to regain international market share.

June 23, 2009 Michael Coleman, Manufacturing Practice Specialty Administrator for the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), said that American manufacturers are increasing market share in the international marketplace due (in part) to maintaining effective work safety and health programs. Also, a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia today stated the US manufacturing sector has shown its best performance since September.
