July 7, 2009 Denise Bode, CEO of the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), released a statement as a vote on the American Clean Energy and Security Act approaches in the U.S. House of Representatives. "The wind energy industry is very grateful for the leadership of Chairmen Waxman and Markey in bringing this legislation to the House floor," she said, "and we support its passage." Bode continued, appreciating their commitment to supporting the development of clean, renewable energy resources.
FAA announces appointment of new chief counsel.

July 7, 2009 David Grizzle has been appointed as FAA chief counsel, according to FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt, who says Grizzle understands challenges of leading diverse, international organization. Grizzle takes on role after 22 yr career with Continental Airlines, Inc., serving as senior VP of customer experience from 2005-2008. He also worked for U.S. Department of State from 2004-2005 and practiced in several New York law firms from 1978-1984.
IPC urges members to resist ban of Tetrabromobisphenol(a).

July 7, 2009 IPC campaign encourages members in Germany and Sweden to contact respective environmental agencies and government officials, urging they resist ban of Tetrabromobisphenol(a) (TBBPA). In EU Risk Assessment, TBBPA flame retardant was found not to be harmful to environment or human health. European Union Council, Germany, and Sweden environmental agencies are calling for restriction of TBBPA under RoHS, which is based on faulty, unscientific report published last year by Íko Institut.

July 7, 2009 At its 2009 Annual Conference, ASHRAE launched the prototype of its Building Energy Quotient building energy labeling program, introduced a year-long focus on existing buildings, and kicked off the Commissioning Process Management Professional certification program. Gordon Holness, ASHRAE president, noted the increase in renovation versus building new and said that "now is the perfect time for ASHRAE to focus on reducing energy consumption in existing buildings."

It provides recognized pictorial illustrations for voluntary use in equipment safety signs, manuals, and other training materials. Introduced in 2006, database offers 130 pictorials searchable by category and keyword, covering many industries/product lines, and stressing hazard identification and avoidance. Graphics are downloadable in EPS and DXF formats.

July 3, 2009 The National Transportation Safety Board's annual report, which provides a summary of accident investigations and safety recommendations in the past calendar year, was released to Congress. Along with investigations into 19 major accidents, 221 regional accidents, and 18 international aviation accidents, 2008 highlights include 34 major reports and accident briefs adopted, 129 safety recommendations issued, and 67 safety recommendations closed.
USDA Report indicates wide adoption of biotech crops.

July 3, 2009 According to USDA's Economic Research Service report, released July 1, 2009, adoption of genetically engineered soybeans was 91% in 2009, cotton reached 88%, and corn climbed to 85%. Report features 3 tables, devoted to each, that cover 2000-09 by U.S. state. It also summarizes extent of adoption of herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant crops since 1996. Sharon Bomer Lauritsen noted that in 2007, use of biotech crops equaled removal of 14.2 billion kg of CO2 from atmosphere.

July 3, 2009 Supporting the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2008 Definition of Solid Waste Rule (DSW), IPC director of environmental policy and government relations Fern Abrams testified as to its environmental benefits. Her testimony focused on how the DSW rule removes regulatory barriers that inhibit the recycling of manufacturing wastes while simultaneously providing an environmental benefit by reducing waste. Based on such points, Abrams urged the EPA to deny Sierra Club's petition.
First Quarter 2009 Laser Orders down 38% from 2008.

July 3, 2009 According to AMT, orders of industrial laser equipment and systems in first quarter 2009 are reported at $58.8 million - a decrease of 38.2% from fourth quarter 2008. Orders within North America totaled $45.9 million, while exports amounted to approximately $12.9 million. By dollar value, laser systems consisting of a source and workstation made up 87.9% of orders. Measured by units, systems accounted for 61.1% of units.
AFS and NADCA combine government affairs efforts.

July 3, 2009 Effective July 1, the federal government affairs services of American Foundry Society (AFS) will be combined with the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA). The result of this collective effort, which will entail a coordinated, joint federal advocacy effort while maintaining each group's status as separate organizations, is to be called the Metalcasters Alliance for Government Affairs and will be represented by Waterman and Associates.
NIST extends deadline for technology innovation proposals.

July 3, 2009 Because of technical difficulties at website accepting electronic submissions, NIST announced it is extending deadline for submitting proposals to its Technology Innovation Program competition from June 23 to Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at 3 pm ET. NIST will now accept only paper submissions. Competition, originally announced on March 26, 2009, offers multiyear, cost-shared research funding in civil infrastructure and advanced materials in manufacturing.

July 3, 2009 NIST is requesting public comment on draft report, formerly announced in Federal Register notice published on June 30, that identifies issues and proposes priorities for developing interoperability standards for smart electric power grid. Prepared under contract by EPRI, report will be used in drafting NIST Smart Grid Interoperability Standards Framework. Comments should reference Federal Register notice and must be received on or before July 30, 2009.
